How can I backup the songs I have in OnSong?

I spent a lot of time importing, converting and tweaking the chord sheets that are in OnSong. I really don't want to lose all this work! How can I make sure that I won't?

The easiest way to back up your OnSong library is to export a backup. To do this, tap on the "share" icon in the menubar. The share button is the one located directly next to the "Songs" button on the iPad, and the far left on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

This will give you options to export, email, print and share wirelessly. Choose to export. This will provide a list of formats to export. Choose "OnSong Backup" and export the file. This will create a backup file in iTunes file sharing.

You then need to retrieve the file and store it on your computer. Open up iTunes and connect your device to the computer. Click on the device on the left side and choose the "Apps" tab on the right. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to the File Sharing section. Click on "OnSong" to the left and on the right will appear files in OnSong. Save the *.backup file to your computer.

To restore this file, put it back into file sharing. Open OnSong and go to the "All Songs" tab in the "Songs" menu. Tap on the "+" button and choose to "Import from iTunes". Choose the backup file from the list. You will be warned that your current OnSong library will be overridden. If you choose to restore, your backup will overwrite your OnSong library.

  • hello Jason,
backup one by one is very time consuming.. is there a possibility to backing up all the files in one cycle? up till now I used sync with dropbox as a backup, though i am not sure this includes all onsong settings and alterations you make " on the fly". and as I wrote to you earlier, it is very slow. takes many hours for about 400 songs. the good thing is with dropbox ,you get the possibility of exchanging with a pc or laptop windows or whatever.
working on a song in windows is easy with program like " linkesoft songbook" e.g.
also dropbox is /seems not 100% accurate in copiyng files, if I sync from onsong Ipad to dropbox, and from there to my Iphone, some files are empty..
in the sync box there is next to dropbox and mobile me (which i do not use because you have to pay annual due to apple) a " other" knob. what do you mean by that?

  • You can backup your entire OnSong library and settings by going to Share --> Export --> OnSong Backup. This creates one file that contains everything. However, this is not good if you are looking to continually edit on the computer and move to OnSong, it's a difficult process currently.

The "Other" option lets you import from other sources such as FTP, WebDAV and Amazon S3. You may just want to do a one-way push from your computer to OnSong since it is much faster.

OnSong 2.0 should feature integration with iCloud which should allow synchronization of your OnSong library between devices.

  • I haven't been able to implement iCloud yet, but it will be available in the 2.0 version. I don't know exactly when iOS 5 will be available, but it will most likely be in the next few weeks.

  • I’m deprested
Ya there just want to know, well let me back up a bit. I did want the video say to do to back up my onsong Songs (lol that sounded funny), anyway. So the reason I did that is because i was cleaning out my ipad. I deleted 115 apps crazy right any way, backed up my songs like it said in the video an tried to reload them and nothing in my itunes. Maybe i should have dropboxed them instead. your thought please. Oh, hope God is still blessing your Family's new girl. It is a girl right?
    • The issue is that exporting to iTunes file sharing keeps the backup in OnSong's file store. You need to transfer the backup file off of the iPad using iTunes file sharing. Otherwise, deleting the app deletes all documents and data associated with it. Dropbox works best for this since it removes that step.

Thank you so much for asking. I apologize for the terrible delay. GetSatisfaction is not easy to keep up with because notifications fail and we get a lot of response. We are doing well and have recently started OnSong as a new company. That was a very busy time.

We still have our girl from South Africa. She has been safe for the past two years except when she goes back to visit over the summer. We continue to send her to private school here and get her counseling. We are starting to see positive change in her life. Obviously the wounds are deep but she is working through them.

If you are interested, she has written a fiction based on her life. http://www.lulu.com/shop/tiffany-both...

Thanks for asking and your continued prayers. God has taken us on a wild ride these past few years, but we are trusting and holding on tight for the adventure of our lives!

  • Do you have a suggestion for using iCloud to sync my iPhone and iPad? It would be great if they could be identical (sets, songs, post it notes). Is this possible?

    • No. OnSong links to songs that are in your iTunes library which are backed up separately.

  • My iPad has to be factory restored when installing iOS5. When I connected to iTunes I chose a different profile name. The most recent backup is in the other profile. Is there a way to get to that backup to restore it?

  • When I follow the instructions to export all my songs to Dropbox, OnSong only exports the song that's active on the OnSong screen on my iPad.

Specifically, I select the Share icon, then Export, then select the Location icon and select Dropbox, navigate to the appropriate Dropbox folder, then select the Files icon and select Select All, and all songs are checked. When that window closes, I press Export, and it immediately shows 100% progress. Then when I go to the selected Dropbox folder, the only file there is the one that was showing on the screen - and all it contains is the song title, not the full song. What am I missing?

  • Hi Jason. I have the original version of OnSong still and am needing to re-purchase the new version apparently because the old one won't update. I've backed up my library but I'm wondering if that will back up my sets as well? Don't want to lose them if possible before updating.

  • Hi all
I am new to Onsong. I have a library of PDFs I have imported into Onsong and using this method, they come in with no metadata. Much of the metadata I already have in a spreadsheet. Is it possible to export/backup the database as described at the start of this thread, edit the database (in/ with what program?) and reimport the database to easily bring the metadata in? The only other way I can see to enter the metadata is one song at a time, which is very tedious......

  • Hi Jason: do you have new instructions for backing up OnSong data to a dropbox folder? And does this backup also include the metadata, like artist name, keywords, sets, folders, books, etc? Please advise.
    thank you. Robin

    • I have a similar question...when I follow these instructions the backup file I create in dropbox reads "OnSong 201310191128 ..(date and time)...BACKUP File.....365KB. This seems small...is it a zip.?
When I try to open this file I get a message "windows cannot open this file" This is also the format when I backup to ITunes. Is this correct ?. Will all my songs, books etc be restored from this file.... I need to be sure I'll get everything back before updating my IPad to ios7
    • Basically the file that is created is a ZIP file of the entire OnSong library folder. This includes the OnSong.sqlite3 database file, settings and externally imported songs. You can rename the file to .zip to open it on your computer. Keep in mind that most if not all of your songs are all contained inside of the OnSong.sqlite3 file which would require a special program to view.

This backup file does store everything in your library including the database, settings and files. You can send to us at support@onsongapp.com if you want us to verify the database.
