"Bad Request- Request Too Long" error message in Chrome but then program is 'Sticking" in IE

2 of my courses give me this error message when i try to login using Chrome: Bad Request: Request Too Long:

When I use IE I can get into the course, but then when I try to go to Add and Arrange and actually add content (like an assessment) it just hangs there at the command and doesn't do anything.

I have had 2 other people try to create assessments on their computer in my 2 courses that aren't working and neither of them could with multiple browsers they tried.

I have tried creating new courses but the same thing happens.

Any suggestions?

    I’m hopeful this is helpful!
Thanks for letting us know, Jennifer. The "Bad Request - Request Too Long" error is exclusive to Chrome. Typically the solution is to clear the cache in your Chrome browser, making sure to completely close all browser windows and tabs after doing so. You will then open a brand new browser window to login to OpenClass.

With regards to IE, you'll want to make sure you're working in a supported version. Here is the latest on our Tech Requirements:

Windows 7 - IE 9, latest versions of Firefox and Chrome
Windows 8 - IE 10, latest versions of Firefox and Chrome
    MacOSX 10.8 - Safari 6.0

  • This reply is a bit late, but this simple advice worked for me. I have posted it elsewhere, and hope it will resolve your "Bad Request" issue (and anyone else's who stumbles upon here):

If you suddenly get a "Bad Request - Too long" error message, it may be due to too many accumulated cookies. You'll need to delete them.

If you're using Google Chrome as your browser, you click on the Wrench (or button with three horizontal lines) icon in the upper right corner > click Tools > click Clear Browsing Data > only check "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Cache" > press "Clear Browsing Data", and then you're done!

  • In some instances like site https://openedx.microsoft.com/ which today May 25, 2017 is not working for Chrome users.

In Chrome, when accessing the site, the HTTP header request is too long for the server to handle, and you can get a Bad Request error.

Opendx is running on a Nginx server, and header buffer size is only 8k for the in-coming request is too large for Nginx server to handle by Chrome. It gets flat out denied in Chrome. It does not matter if you are incognito mode or not.
