I’m feeling some bumps in the road

Unable to create a user in OpenClass if their email address includes a hyphen

I did a bulk upload of about 30 new students. Issues...
1) it did not follow the color coordination protocol I have learned regarding when someone has logged in and when an auto-email for password set up was sent. I do not know if it auto sent the password email like it does when you set up students one at a time. I manually sent them the link...to each one of them.
2) It did not notify me that one of the student's email was not accepted. I did not double check each student on the list, as I assumed the bulk upload would have everything covered.

Now that student has emailed me asking why he never received his welcome email to set up his password. I had no idea, until I checked "people" that the bulk upload did not put him in.

Now, I am trying to enter him manually, and it rejects his email as "not valid". I now realize this is why the bulk upload didn't get him in...but I was never notified. No "error" message or anything.

His email address is valid, as it is the one he is sending me his complaints from regarding him not receiving his email. His email address does include hyphens. It is the email of his professional business website, so it's a bit of a jab to him for me to ask him to use a different email address...though that is what I have already suggested to him so he can get into the course right away.

  • Can you please provide more information, Glenn?

    1. Can you please explain what you are referring to when you say "color coordination protocol"? Please provide a screenshot if it provides a better method to describe.

    2. We have checked the batch upload tool on your campus and it appears the two files uploaded on October 14 failed and an error message indicating this did post in the status column. Can you please elaborate on the notification you were expecting to receive? Is there a different file that we're not seeing?

We would like to help with the student you reference in your post. Can you please provide us with his email address? Or has he already moved forward in using an alternate email address to access OpenClass? We would be happy to take a closer look at his account.

  • I was confused. When first entering a new person manually, their name is highlighted in the list. I thought the highlighting meant they had not yet set up their password. However, in refreshing the list, I see that highlighting goes away.

here's a more simply question: When doing a bulk upload, does it auto send the password creation link or does it have to be manually sent.

NEXT: emails with hyphens are not accepted in OpenClass as far as I have experienced. I suggest changing that. I have already gotten an alternate email from the student and he is well on his way to learning.

NEXT: When bulk uploading students, one of them had a hyphenated email and was not accepted. I was never notified of that until the student asked why he hadn't gotten anything. There should be some notification to the admin when someone in the bulk upload list is not able to be added. Just a suggestion.

I’m happy to report all of this good news!
You are correct, Glenn, our system will not accept email addresses that include a hyphen. You are also correct in that this is something we should change. And we plan to! We hope to release a fix that will allow for users to be created with an email address that includes a hyphen by the end of the year.

To address your note regarding batch notifications, this is something we are also working on. Look for enhancements to be released to the batch tool in the coming months.

And to your simple question, yes, when a user is created through the batch tool, the welcome email is auto-generated and delivered to the email address that was used to create the user in OpenClass. If your students are not receiving these emails, please ask them to check their junk mail folder as security/spam settings on certain email servers will redirect the OpenClass email.

Also, I know you know this, but as a reminder, the activation link expires after 15 days so you will need to resend the email to any user who has not activated their account within 15 days of being added to OpenClass. You'll be happy to know we understand this limitation can be a headache for Administrators so we are working to lift the 15-day expiration next year.

  • I’m tired of waiting!
Happy New Year - Our District has adopted the use of OpenClass and as a person who has a hyphenated name, I found this topic of great interest.

    First some background -
My name has been hypenated since 1973.
I have worked in Technology since 1974.

Still looking for a fix? If you haven't already, might I suggest investing the NoSQL world...
