I’m extremely frustrated

Activity Feed Chronology

I asked students to post a remark in the activity feed to complete a course assignment. They did, but when my TA went in to collect and enter their responses into a course spreadsheet, she noticed that she cannot go back and read the activity feed from the start of the course! The option to "show more" only appears on a week or two of remarks. Why? Why doesn't the feed allow you to click "show more" until the very first remark made in the class? You can do this on Facebook and Twitter .... the fact that you cannot do this on OpenClass clashes with what we expect from the modern, social web.

  • We can understand your frustration, Lisa. Thank you for your feedback.

Currently the activity feed is configured to pull data for the past 30 days. This limitation is in place for performance reasons.

The good news is we are addressing this issue with a future release to the activity feed that will eliminate the 30-day limitation. We will update the community when a release date for this feature is determined.

  • 30 days? Do you mean the activity feed 'within' the course site (and not from the dashboard landing page)? In my class, I am only able to "show more" of the feed for 10 days into the past.

    Perhaps there is a bug?

  • EMPLOYEE
I’m happy to be working with you.
Let's do a little reconnaissance, Lisa.

Course activity appearing today should be pulling from 8/29. There is a difference in the data that is displayed on your Dashboard and the data that is displayed within a course:

    The Dashboard activity feed displays:
    • thread-post
    • remark
    • assignment - submission
    • assessment - submission
    • grade

    The Course activity feed displays:
    • thread-post
    • remark

So if there are certain items you are expecting to see in a particular activity feed, but those items are not displayed according to the list above, then it may appear as though the particular activity feed isn't going as far back as 30 days.

If you are seeing behavior contrary to the intended behavior described above, please provide us with the specific course title as we would like to investigate further.

Thank you, Lisa! We appreciate your help.

  • Seems you do have a bug. The activity feed in my class, Oral Communication for Actuaries, pulls data only from the past 10 days, not 30. Please investigate and fix.

  • We most certainly will, Lisa. Thank you for reviewing the content of your activity feed.

  • We have an update for you, Lisa. Both the Dashboard and Course Activity Feed pull data from the last 30 days, however there is an item threshold specific to remarks. It will only pull and display 20 remarks within the feed at one time. After you hit the 20 remark limit, new remarks will push the less recent remarks off the activity feed.

We have tentatively scheduled the fix to be completed and released early next year. In the meantime, you can retrieve remarks for a specific student in your course by clicking on the 'People' tab that appears on your course home. Click on the name of the student who's activity you would like to review and a compilation of their remarks will appear. Please see the screenshot below.

This is not ideal. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you will stay tuned to OpenClass as additional Social features and enhancements will be introduced to the solution as we move into 2013.

Thank you again for your feedback, Lisa. This is good information for the OpenClass teams as well as the community at large.
