Add flexibility for sections and grouping

One of the frustrations I have with a LOT of educational software is the lack of understanding of how teachers really work. For example, very few LMS have any built in facility for dealing with class sections despite the fact the most secondary teachers actually work this way. Ideally the LMS would allow me to use a single course for all sections while giving me flexibility make changes on a per sections basis. E.G. I may do a research project in which the student project is a Group Wiki. 1 per section. And some assignments should really have different due dates if I work on an alternating block day. So if I use the LMS submission features, it should flag late submissions using the appropriate section due date. And the grade book should be able to recognize that a grade might have more than one due date and not create 2 separate grade columns.
If the LMS has assessment tools, I would prefer to be able to see both the scores in aggregate of all of my students as well as by section.

I would love to have grouping tools within the LMS that let me EASILY create subgroups within a section. e.g. a single click that create groups of n students or n groups of random students. Even more powerful would be a round robin group generator that I could pull from repeatedly, advancing a round each time. Another powerful tool for differentiation would be a grouping tool that highlighted a per-assessment as I assemble groups, making it easy to create leveled groups or heterogeneous as desired.

  • Yes! Sometimes when building a master schedule, it is necessary to schedule two different sections at the same time in the same room and with the same teacher. For example, in music classes, you might have 3-4 different sections present at the same time in the same room with the same teacher (one for strings, one for brass, one for woodwinds, etc). The ability to combo these sections together into a single section would be great for the teachers.

  • This is a great idea, Daniel. We appreciate you adding your two cents, and expect your thoughts represent many other instructors and online education administrators who feel the same.

While this functionality is not possible in OpenClass today, we hope to include it sometime in the future. In the meantime, your instructors may want to consider using the Collaborations tool to create a space for each different section/group. Each Collaboration can be titled specifically to be easily identified by students, and the appropriate students can then be added to their respective section's/group's Collaboration. This will allow your instructors to control access to content included in each collection.

We understand this is not a perfect solution to your idea, but hope you'll find some value in it nonetheless. Thank you again, Daniel!
