  • You can use gmail.com email addresses to create users on your campus, however the way in which these accounts will function depends on whether or not your OpenClass campus is Google integrated at the institution level. Did you install OpenClass through the Google Apps Marketplace?

If you did install OpenClass through the Google Apps Marketplace, any user that is created outside of your institution's domain (the domain that OpenClass was installed on) will not be able to take advantage of the Google tools.

If your OpenClass campus was delivered without Google integration, you are able to associate a Google consumer account to a user that has been created on your campus. This would allow that particular user to take advantage of Google tools such as Docs, Calendar, and Mail.

Please keep in mind, we don’t recommend the addition of non-Google users to a Google integrated campus as the integration is intended to support institutions who utilize Google Apps for Education in the classroom, however we do understand certain circumstances require it. If you choose to add users outside of your school’s domain, please note the following:

    1. The login process will be different than it is for users that exist on your Google Apps for Education domain. They will have to enter through the OpenClass portal https://www.pearsonopenclass.com/.

    2. The activation of these users will require you to manually send the activation link from within OpenClass via the Administrator tools rather than being able to rely on the auto generated welcome email that contains the activation link. Users who are added to your OpenClass campus with an email address outside of your school's domain will still receive the auto-generated email, however the information/activation link included in this email will not be of use to them.

  • Ours is through the marketplace.

We would like to try adding a non-domain student. How would my administrator do that?

  • We were able to do this, though I agree that the limitations are severe. It is better than nothing, though. Thanks for the quick response.

  • An option to edit the Auto-Generated Email will prevent confusion from what is stated in the email, because we could just add the login portal, and perhaps, the activation link as a variable token.

  • We understand this, Carlos, and hope to offer a customization option in the future, however those institutions currently installed on a Google domain are configured to support Google users. Therefore, the OpenClass welcome email with activation information is geared toward those with existing Google accounts.

If you elect to add non-Google users to a Google-enabled OpenClass institution, you will need to follow the steps outlined above to ensure they are able to access the institution. We apologize for the inconvenience.
