Fill In The Blank: Capitalization and Punctuation Sensitivity

Hi,

I love to create worksheets using fill-in-the-blank-style questions. I hate it when a student is marked incorrect for punctuation or capitalization; often I don't care as long as they get the right word! There is an old LMS out there called Quia that lets me tell the software to ignore punctuation/capitalization simply by checking two boxes (see pic below). Does OpenClass have this feature?

  • Hello Erik,

    The image you attached isn't visible, but I think I know the answer anyway. Openclass doesn't check for punctuation in text-entry responses, and there aren't any settings to turn that functionality on/off. If you are looking for a specific word with specific spelling, we would recommend not using capitalization or punctuation in your answer so they will always match a student's entry. It might also be helpful to have just the one word you are looking for as the blank, so that students don't put in multiple words when they don't need to.

    Hope this helps,

    • Hi,

      Sorry, I think I was supposed to leave my comment here instead of below.

      I was hoping to confirm my understanding of how OpenClass corrects the fill-in-the-blank-style questions.

      It sounds like OpenClass will not check punctuation, so student responses won't be marked wrong for punctuation. Correct?

      I'm not sure you had a chance to address the case-sensitivity question. Will OpenClass mark student responses wrong if the case doesn't match the answer key? In other words, if the answer key reads "Monday" and the student writes "monday", will OpenClass mark it correct or incorrect?

      Thanks in advance,

      Erik

  • Yes, thanks. If I may, let me check my understanding.

    When auto-correcting fill-in-the-blank-style responses, OpenClass will:

    1)disregard puncutation, so student responses will not be marked wrong due to punctuation errors;

    2)disregard case sensitivity, so student responses will not be marked wrong due to letter case.

    Do I have it right?

    FYI, this site disallowed the img HTML tag (at least partially), so the image isn't showing. If you right-click the image you can still open and view it in a new tab.

    Thanks for your help!
