Google Apps users are receiving an error when clicking on 'OpenClass' from the 'More' dropdown menu. Why?

Hi I have recently looked into adding Open class to our google education apps, we have not yet gone live but have been testing it. So far the only account that works is the administrator account. We want all users to login with a their google account by going to more at the top and choosing openclass. However this is the error all the other users receive.

The users were manually added as email address weren't set up at this point, apart from the admin account. I believe this may have something to do with it. However because deleting an account isn't possible I can't reinvite a user.

{"code":500,"status":"fail","message":"Not Found","data":"HttpResponseException"}

Please help us solve this problem so we can use openclass

  • Thank you for kicking the OpenClass tires! Can you please tell us the name of your institution so we can take a closer look at the issue you are reporting?

We have run into the same issue. We are Austin Community College and Austin Community College District. We turned it on today and are receiving the error: {"code":500,"status":"fail","message":"Internal Server Error","data":"HttpResponseException"}.

  • EMPLOYEE
    I’m confident this will help.
Thank you for installing OpenClass, Lara! We're happy to have Austin Community College District on board.

It appears that no users have been added to your OpenClass institution. Before instructors and students will be able to access OpenClass from their Google toolbar, the Administrator will need to create an account for them. After each user has been added, they will receive a welcome email with information to help activate their OpenClass account.

Thank you again, Lara. We hope you enjoy the experience!

  • Thank you! Is there any way to bypass the welcome email and silently add them to OpenClass?

  • Our pleasure, Lara!

You are not able to disable the auto-generated welcome email at this time, however we are exploring the idea of allowing institutions to customize email notification settings in the future. This would be a part of a broader set of Administrator tools we hope to develop down the road. Thank you for your feedback!

  • Thank you for sharing the name of your institution with us. We see there are currently three active users on your OpenClass campus, and one has not yet activated their account. Is Luke (Student) the user who is receiving the 500 error upon clicking OpenClass where it appears in the Google toolbar under the 'More' dropdown menu?

As you'll read in the responses to this topic in the thread above, if there are other individuals on your Google domain who you wish to have access to OpenClass, you will need to add them to your OpenClass institution before they will be able to login via their Google Apps account.

Thanks again for your help! We'll take a closer look after we know which account needs attention.

  • Hi, thanks for responding, Luke (Student) isn't an issue at the moment. the issue is with Luke Watson who cannot access open class using the 'more' dropdown menu. The only user that this is working for is admin. It is as though the user cannont be logged in and authenticated using this method which is what we want all staff and students to be able to do.

  • This is strange as it appears Luke Watson was at one point able to login successfully through Google Apps. The last login date was July 4. Can you please confirm this is true?

You mention Luke is returning the HTTP 500 error when clicking on OpenClass where it appears under the 'More' dropdown in the Google toolbar. Can you please ask Luke to login using the 'Sign in with Google Apps' button on the OpenClass portal www.pearsonopenclass.com/? Please let us know if Luke is successful in logging into OpenClass via this method.

  • Dear OpenClass,

I am reproducing the same error.
    Steps to check:
    1. create a Google Apps (for Education) user using the Google Admin
    2. Add the user to Open Class
    3. Login to Gmail as the new user and see the welcome email (all working fine so far)
    4. Select More -> OpenClass
    5. Browser opens a new window with the address "https://login.pearsonopenclass.com/go...=" and error text {"code":500,"status":"fail","message":"Not Found","data":"HttpResponseException"}

    Alternative to reproduce the error:
    a. Execute the steps 1-3 as above (or, if already done, no need to redo them)
    b. go to https://login.pearsonopenclass.com
    c. Select Sign In with Google Apps - enter the email for the new user
    d. get the same error

I would be more helpful to (at least) catch this error and redirect the user to a friendly screen with a statement like 'there was a login problem, try again later'.

Please note that I get the same behavior in case I only create a new user and that user tries to select More -> Open Class (even though he is not yet added by me to Open Class users).

I hope this information helps to track the problem and solve it in a timely manner, I plan to organize some classes soon and am deciding if to use this solution or not.

    • Sorry for spamming, just trying to send all possible info I find on this error - I really want to help fixing it soon, otherwise when the courses here start I will lose a lot of students only because of this problem.

An additional update is that if I just change the type of user (ex. from 'Admin' to 'Instructor') the same error appears.
Estimated downtime for the affected account (on any of these modifications): 20minutes.
    • Thank you for providing this information, Traian. We appreciate your testing and taking note of the behavior you're experiencing.

Something to keep in mind, OpenClass is not yet optimized for use outside of the U.S. As noted in the Google Apps Marketplace, the app in its current state is built for US higher education institutions and professors. While all Google Apps users are welcome to download OpenClass through the Marketplace, they should be aware of degradation that could occur if using the application outside of the prescribed environment. An example of this degradation is the delay you're experiencing when creating users.

Our plan to allow for optimized performance abroad in the future includes the addition of servers overseas, however the deployment of these servers has not yet been scheduled.

We also hope to add more friendly messaging in the future however development has not yet been scheduled. In the meantime, please keep this delay in mind as you create student and instructor accounts to ensure timely user access to course materials. Please also free to message this behavior to your instructors and students so they are aware.

Thank you again for your help, Traian!

  • I am having a similar issue with my students on our google apps edu account. I added them to OpenClass and they successfully logged in last week. Since then they are getting the error message posted above. I need them to be able to get to OpenClass as that is where I have the content for my AP Biology class!

  • Can you please provide us with the complete last names and first initial of the first names of the students who are not able to login to OpenClass? This will help us to investigate the issue you are reporting.

Thank you for your help, Mark!

    • Thank you, Mark. We have sent a message to the email address used to create your account here in the OpenClass Community Forum. Please be on the lookout!
    • We have another update for you, Mark. We're seeing non-Google credentials associated with your student's Google accounts and are wondering if one of the following applies to the students who are unable to login:

      1. Your students were manually sent the activation link for their account. They then clicked the link, created a new password, and attempted to use this new password to access OpenClass rather than their existing Google password.

      2. Their password was reset in OpenClass and this new password was used to access OpenClass rather than their existing Google password.

If either of the above scenarios applies to your students, can you please ask them to login at www.pearsonopenclass.com? They will enter their email address and the new password that was created, not their Google passwords, in the non-Google fields. Please see the screenshot below for an illustration.

Because they activated their accounts with their Google credentials, the Google tools will still be available to them.

As mentioned in our previous post, we will be releasing a fix for this issue in the coming weeks at which point your students will be able to login via the intended Google workflows.

  • Good morning,

One of my staff members is also experiencing this issue at MSAD #6. Janice Corliss. She has been an instructor in the system since last year, this year she is getting the {"code":500,"status":"fail","message":"Not Found","data":"HttpResponseException"} message.

  • She did try to change it after it gave her the message a few times thinking that was the issue and it was on the pearson screen, she changed it to exactly what it is in Google still.
    • Thank for providing this information, Tonya. The error Janice is receiving is the result of a bug in our system. The bug caused her account to be associated with Google and non-Google attributes after she changed her password on the Pearson screen. The good news is our team has identified a resolution and is currently targeting to release the fix on September 13, at which point she will be able to login via the intended Google workflows.

To ensure Janice has access to OpenClass in the meantime, can you please ask her to login at www.pearsonopenclass.com? She will enter her email address and the password that she created on the Pearson screen in the non-Google login fields. Please see the screenshot below for an illustration.

      Thank you for your understanding!
