I’m frustrated

Gradebook Issues

I've been experiencing the following gradebook issues in my course.
•Grades: I can download an excel spreadsheet but I cannot enter my grades directly into the week associated with that grade.
•I cannot sign in as myself.
•Submissions: I cannot change the assignments to match the week I would be in for the girls to submit their papers and vice versa.
•I'm not sure how to effectively utilize the google docs tab.

Please help.

  • Hi Ivette,

We are here to help. Let's tackle each issue separately.

Are you having trouble entering the grades into the gradebook user interface? If so, does it just not let you click into the field (or what error are you encountering here)? What browser are you using? Have you cleared your browsing data recently?

When you say you cannot sign in as yourself, are you saying you cannot use your login at the login page? Or you cannot access the gradebook? Does it give you an error message of any sort?

For your submissions question, I am not sure what you are trying to do here. To change any assignment, you can use the "Modify Menu" page and click directly on the name of an item to edit the title. If this does not answer your question, please give me the name of your course and your campus name so that I can look at it further.

Finally, for the Google Docs tab, are you referring to the tab in the upper right hand corner or the Collaborations tool within the course?

    Thank you,
    Paige

  • Thank you Paige for your assistance.

I was able to work it out with my colleague. You see my colleague who is the instructor of the course is using an apple computer and login into the course using Safari Web Browser. She was claiming that she could not see the assignments in the gradebook nor the students. however, when she uses a windows computer and logins into OpenClass with Chrome web browser she can see all the assignments and students in the gradebook.

Paige is Safari not a compatible web browser with OpenClass? Or, is it the Apple computer operating system that is not compatible with OpenClass.

    Please advise.

  • Hi Ivette,

I am working on a Mac, and I have not encountered any of the issues mentioned in Safari. I do primarily work in Chrome on my Mac, and that browser seems to be the most consistent.

One easy solution is to clear our browsing data. Depending on what you are doing, each browser holds on to old data in an effort to load the platform quickly. I will continue to try to recreate the issues mentioned, but please reach out if you have any other problems.

    Thank you,
    Paige
    • Paige,

I am using a Macbook Pro laptop running OSX version 10.9.4 and the trackpad as a mouse. Web browsers I have installed and use in OpenClass are Firefox v.30, Safari v.7.0.5, and Chrome v. 37. In all browsers I have the same experience: when I initiate a the browser session, log in to OpenClass and click on our Basic Trig course the Welcome page loads fine. Then I single click on Gradebook and wait – not thing appears- so I double click Gradebook again wait under a second and the spreadsheet appears but no vertical and horizontal scroll bars are visible. This also occurs when I click on Performance and Modify menu. I don't see an attachement function in this comment box to send you screenshots. I discovered by accident that still using the trackpad I hover the cursor over the gradebook spreadsheet and using my index and middle finger move left to right and that makes the gradebook scroll so I can see all items. When I do this with the Performance page, the both vertical and horizontal scroll bars become visible but disappear once I stop the movement with my fingers. I did this test again using an external mouse and when I clicked on gradebook and moved my mouse’s scroll wheel the scroll bars appeared and stayed visible. Using an external mouse seems to make the scroll bars appear and stay visible then using the trackpad.

Any idea why the scroll bars are not visible automatically? Also, once the Gradebook has been loaded it will load faster the next time. If I close browser or clear browser data it will take a while to load or not load until I double click again. I am have a phone meeting with my colleague at 1P ET to relay my finds. Any insights you have to working efficiently using a Macbook Pro are welcome.

      Thanks Paige.

  • Hi Ivette,

We have been trying to recreate, but we want to help. Is there any way you can create a video and share it with us at info@joinopenclass.com?

Thanks Paige for the info. I will post questions on the OpenClass forum from now on.
To respond to your question "For the journal entry, it appears as though the student clicked "submit" but did not enter any details or attach a file. Can you confirm whether or not the student tried to submit text or an attachment?"

We found the student's journal entry response in the Gradebook item's "View Details" page. See picture attached.

To recap, to review student's assessment responses, whether it's a quiz, short answer or essay, the instructor needs to grade the responses from the student detail view in the gradebook. The submissions page is only for students to upload an assignment that they completed outside of OpenClass.

Plese correct me if I misunderstood.

    Best,
    Ivette
