How secure is our information?

We are trying Open Class for a class where students submit very personal information in their papers. Can you talk more about the security involved in the site? Does Open Class employees have access to the papers or only our users? Also, when we delete a course is it totally removed from your system?

  • Excellent question, Matt. When an Administrator deletes a course from their campus, it is completely deleted. If you have deleted a course in OpenClass, you'll notice there is a safeguard put in place that requires the Administrator to actually type the word 'DELETE' to ensure a course is not accidentally removed from the campus as we are not able to recover content that is deleted.

With regards to student work in OpenClass, there are a limited number of Pearson employees who can access this information. This access is not abused in a way that we would troll for personal information but rather this access is necessary for our team to support system performance as well as troubleshoot issues that are reported by specific OpenClass users and institutions.

  • Thanks for the clarification. I have one more question. I noticed in your policies that its says you have the right to use the information put on the site. I just wanted to make sure that when students or faculty upload papers that they are not giving Pearson the right to use the papers themselves or their content for anything.

  • Pearson has access only so far as outlined in the Terms of Service as you have read.

We certainly appreciate the concern for your students and instructors. To reiterate, only a select few Pearson employees have access to instructor/student work and access is utilized only in the case of troubleshooting which is typically initiated by the Administrator of an institution. So if everything is working for you and there is no issue to investigate, we will not be accessing your campus.
