Login blues, lyrics confused

About this link: https://login.pearsonopenclass.com. I'm not sure why there are two ways to sign in. Yes, our students are set up on Google Apps with our domain (@keruloslearn.org, under www.kerulos.org).

When I try to simulate the account activation and log in experience (to make a tutorial), the system's behavior at login is variable. Sometimes this login page forces me to enter user/pwd twice, sometimes only the Sign in with Google Apps button works.

Do you folks have a good explanation that I can pass on to new students?

I'm becoming hesitant to use OpenClass for fear of the confusion about logging in after account activation.

  • We're sorry for the confusion, Jeff. Because you're a Google institution, there are two ways to login. This is not meant to make things more difficult for those who use OpenClass but rather more convenient as it allows students and instructors to access their course from Google in the case they are already logged into Google, or directly from www.pearsonopenclass.com in the case they would prefer to bypass Google and go directly to their course.

We suggest offering the information listed below to your students. We hope it will be helpful to explaining the login process:

After your account is activated, you can login to OpenClass with your Google Apps for Education credentials in one of two ways:

    1. You can go to the OpenClass portal https://www.pearsonopenclass.com/ where you will click on the ‘Sign in with Google Apps’ button near the bottom of the screen and enter your email address in the pop-up field as illustrated in the screenshot below. You will then be redirected to your institution’s Google single sign on page where you will enter your Google Apps for Education login ID and password.

    2. You can login to OpenClass by clicking the ‘More’ tab that will appear in your toolbar when you are logged into your Google Apps for Education account, and then clicking 'OpenClass' where it appears in the dropdown menu.

Thanks for this great reply! But I'm confused about this:

"[I]t allows students and instructors to access their course from Google in the case they are already logged into Google."

How is OpenClass accessed from Google? Would that be an exclusive feature of Google Chrome?
    • Only users that are created on an OpenClass institution that was installed on a Google Apps for Education domain can access OpenClass via their Google Apps for Education account. They do so by following the steps outlined in the post above.

Please note the importance of the Google Apps for Education domain. The domain on which OpenClass was installed and on which your user email addresses were created must be the same. For example, your institution was created on kerulos.org so only those users with kerulos.org email addresses will be able to access OpenClass through Google.

None of these feature are exclusive to the Chrome browser. The Google Apps for Education and OpenClass integration can be leveraged on any supported browser.

P.S. I have created an account in Google Apps called bradshaw@keruloslearn.org. I have also created an OpenClass instructor by the same name. They now have the same passwords in both places. However, this user cannot log in via "Sign in with Google Apps," but only with the login fields above this button. What gives here? I'm trying to see a pattern so I can simply give our students a tutorial for logging in! Can you explore what the variables at play here are?

    I’m confident this will help.
Although you have added a Google email address to your OpenClass institution, name@keruloslearn.org, the domain does not match that on which your OpenClass institution was created. OpenClass does not yet support the use of multiple Google domains on a single instance of OpenClass. Because your institution was created on the kerulos.org domain, only those that have email addresses on the kerulos.org Google Apps for Education domain will be able to access OpenClass through the Google workflows outlined above. OpenClass will recognize any other email address on any other domain as a non-Google email address.

Any non-Google user (this includes those email addresses on the keruloslearn.org domain) you add to your Kerulos Learning Institute campus in OpenClass (a Google institution installed on the kerulos.org domain) will have to login using the standard fields at www.pearsonopenclass.com. • I’m unsure
OK, this starting to become clear. If bradshaw@keruloslearn.org logs in as suggested above, will she have access to the Google Apps tools in the OpenClass? (I believe she will, because this is a Gmail address. If it were not, she would not have that access...check me.)

I created the additional domain (keruloslearn.org) so that student email addresses would be different from those of our main organization (nonprofit). Perhaps I should have used keruloslearn.org as the primary domain for our Google Apps account? Would this be a workable solution, to either switch primary domains or (2) migrate to another nonprofit educational account?

Thanks for your quick and informative replies!

    I’m hopeful you're feeling informed.
I'm glad we're helping to make sense of the process, Jeff. Let's continue to work at it.

Any email address on the keruloslearn.org domain that is added to the Kerulos Learning Institute campus in OpenClass will NOT have access to the Google tools in OpenClass because the institution was installed on the kerulos.org domain. As a reminder, any account added to Kerulos Learning Institute with an email address that does not exist on the kerulos.org domain will be treated as a non-Google user by OpenClass.

There are several things you need to be aware of when adding non-Google users to a Google enabled institution. Please visit this topic here in the community forum to learn more. We have shared this information with you in a previous post, but we want to share again for ease of access.

With regards to including both domains in a single instance of OpenClass, we are gearing up to allow for this functionality. We are hoping to release this in the fall of this year. If you're able, we recommend waiting to combine domains until this time. It will be an easy workflow for an Administrator to add an additional Google domain to an existing OpenClass institution, however combining two separate OpenClass institutions that were installed on separate Google domains may be impossible.

Our recommendation is to wait until OpenClass supports dual domains. Those users with email addresses on the keruloslearn.org domain won't be able to access Google directly from OpenClass in the meantime, however waiting is far less risky than creating another OpenClass institution. Another reminder, once an email address is used in OpenClass, it cannot be recreated on another OpenClass campus. This is another reason why waiting for the release is your best bet.

Thanks so much for your illuminating support! I will wait as you have advised.
