Student sees fill-in-the-blank answers after taking assessment?

Many of my assessments are formative, so students need to see correct answers after finishing. Supposedly I can do this via the following path: Manage Assessment--> Schedule--> Review Date--> Display grade with answers on Review Date.

While this works for multiple choice, it does not work for fill-in-the-blank style questions. Can anyone help me identify what I'm goofing up or is this an OpenClass design problem?

This Knowledge Base article does not address the issue, nor did an older thread in this forum.

Below is a screenshot from a student screen. Notice that she cannot see correct answers.

  • Hi Erik,

We will check with the team to see if this was designed this way for some reason. As soon as we have more information, we will let you know.

    Thank you,
    The OpenClass Team

  • Hi, just checking in. Anyone know why the "show answers" feature doesn't work for fill-in-the-blank-style questions?

  • Hi Erik,

It was by design that they do not show. At the time of design, it was hard to account for all scenarios (caps, punctuation, etc) and there is a lot of logic to build into the system in order to accommodate those scenarios. Since we do not score answers based on capitalization and punctuation, the direct match display was also not designed into the feedback.

    Kind Regards,

  • Thank you for your continued dialogue about the functionalities of OpenClass. Your willingness to respond to user comments is much appreciated and will no doubt result in a better OpenClass. In the spirit of constructive criticism, I'd like to comment on a few details from the prior OpenClass employee post. Please understand that, although critical, I intend my comments to improve OpenClass.

1)"It was by design that they do not show."
That's poor design. If you have a feature called "show answers" it should do just that. This deserves a fix.

2)"Since we do not score answers based on capitalization and punctuation"
OpenClass does in fact score answers based on punctuation. See this thread. But the important point here is this: however OpenClass chooses to score this question type should have no bearing on whether or not the show answers feature works properly.

3)"...there is a lot of logic to build into the system..."
There is no additional logic required to fix this feature. We're not talking about changing how OpenClass grades this question type, we're only talking about whether or not OpenClass will show the answers.
