I’m wishing this could be fixed.

Student-generated discussion topics

Is there a way to create threaded discussions where students can add their own topics? I do understand that for some discussions the instructor only wants students to respond to their topics/questions. But some of the best discussions in my classes come out of things that the students themselves want to talk about. For now, I'm working around this lack of student control by creating miscellaneous topics for students to respond to with their own items. But that creates a "top-down" feel that isn't conducive to student engagement, ownership, and active learning.

    Hi Melinda,

We have received this request in the past, but at this time our thread topics can only be created by instructors. We are working to improve the opportunity of students to create the topics of discussions, but this capability is part of a larger effort toward social learning that we are targeting completion at the end of the year.

Thanks for your willingness to work around this issue in OpenClass today while we work on a major improvement to the overall experience.

I'll keep this idea open until we launch an equivalent to the feature you have requested.

  • It appears that only instructors can start a topic in discussion boards.
What I use discussion boards for is to have the students share their artwork for critique. In the current setup, all they can do is respond to my topic which does not allow them to include a photo in reply ( I do not want it as attachment that must be downloaded by each viewer, it needs to be in the text box)
Also, in the stream I am not able to post photos unless it is an internet link , not a personal image. Is this correct, and if so can this be changed?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Discussion forum - students start a topic?.

  • This is a feature request we've heard before, Erin, and we are absolutely understanding of its value. While this is under consideration, we suggest exploring student-led posts on Course Home as a workaround. This is not ideal for an instructor who wishes to utilize threaded discussions but it does provide an avenue for students to drive conversation.

With regards to adding a photo to a post, you are correct in understanding the current functionality, however we will be introducing the option for an instructor or student to add an image from their personal machine later this summer/early fall. Stay tuned for updates!

  • In the fall we will be able to post personal images in discussion board response posts?
    Or in home page posts?

I am looking for a more controlled, gradable discussion forum than what the home page offers, so I strongly suggest you consider adding this function- I am sure many more could use this.
    Thank you

  • Your question here in the forum pointed to posting photos in the stream which refers to the course home page so we elected to respond accordingly. We apologize if we misunderstood your question.

As mentioned, we will be introducing the option for an instructor or student to add an image to a stream post on course home from their personal machine later this summer/early fall.

With regards to threaded discussions, instructors can currently insert an image directly into their first post to start a topic, however as you noted, all subsequent replies require attaching a photo in order to include it in the post. Allowing for images to be included directly in a threaded discussion post is recorded as a feature enhancement request however development has not yet been scheduled.

Thank you for your input regarding student driven topics in threaded discussions, Erin. We are certainly taking it under consideration!
