I’m happy

Slick site, great work!

Great job with the new design. Excited to see site interactivity and functionality as dev wraps up!

  • There are some things I like about the new look and I hate to say it but I think it's a massive step back in usability, clarity and not that much of an improvement design wise.

I know it's only an alpha so I'm sure there's a lot of polishing to be added but as a designer, the reason I visit PT at the moment is because it's so easy to have a look at a specific type of design (eg - lists). This new look doesn't give me the feeling I can quickly filter and find the specific stuff I'm after.

I can see that the look you're going for is very similar (and functionality) to cssline.com which does work well. Perhaps because it's not a jumble of different sized images.

Sorry if my feedback sounds harsh but I think this version in design and UI terms is already looking in danger of being a big step backwards in favour of adding flavour of the month stuff like "load more images" buttons at the bottom of pages etc.

Look forward to seeing it progress past alpha though when I'd be able to get a better feel for what you're working on!

    Hi Offroad Code,
Wow, what a great and thoughtful post. Thank you for taking the time. This is exactly what we're looking for. We've been debating the columnar/row structure in house and wondering about usability too. Thanks for making this a bit clearer for us.

I appreciate that you recognize that we are in Alpha. This is exactly why we released alpha, for feedback along the way, rather than simple intuition.

As for searching/filtering, that's coming soon to the alpha and we'd love your continued feedback. As often as you're willing to throw down with us, we'd love to hear from you.

    Thank you!

  • No probs, hope the feedback was useful at this early stage.

It's difficult to provide feedback on behalf of other users but I personally have a specific use for PT and that's as a source of specific inspiration / reference for site elements such as lists/calendars etc so at the alpha stage the new version just doesn't work anywhere near as well as the old one (for me).

I keep a couple of sets on the current PT for stuff I like but I find that it's currently manageable in terms of viewing 90 per page on the existing site so I tend to very quickly scan the pages to see if there's something that catches my eye.

Will definitely be keeping an eye on developments so happy to provide more feedback along the way when I get a chance!

  • I strongly agree with Offroad Code about this alpha seeming like a massive step backwards.

Whilst it's true that that Pattern Tap is often a source of inspiration for me, I don't use it as an inspiration site. I use it as a structured resource to find how other designers have solved specific problems. There are already plenty of inspiration sites on the web and the current Pattern Tap site stands out precisely because it's NOT a stream of design consciousness.

As much as I like the masonry javascript effect, I don't think it's suitable for the kind of structured content that Pattern Tap is useful for.

In many ways, for the way I use a resource like Pattern Tap, the search should be considered a minor feature rather than the main gateway to content. I am a huge fan of the current sites list of collections on the homepage, it makes it immediately clear what the site is about and what makes it different from other sites.

I'm all for refreshing a site that hasn't been altered much in a while, but for me it seems like you're changing what Pattern Tap is about at a pretty fundamental levle.

We'll be adding "browse" this week or next as an additional alpha feature, adn then in the future we've been aiming at having a boolean search for more advanced users.

Ex: Lists + Calendars or Events

    More to come...

@andrew, fascinating. I can see what you're saying. Hang in there with us while we add browsing, and potentially offer some viewing options. Search is definitely on the top of the list for needed tools. I was originally thinking like you when I created Pattern Tap, but others simply want search. We all find things differently. GREAT feedback. Much appreciated.

  • I’m still a fan. Don't hate me.
not to rehash, but I have to agree. The first thing I was looking for was where do I filter by the great tags you use in PT1.

Second, once I clicked an Image, I didn't find an easy way back, but that may be coming....

I DO HOWEVER LOVE THE "SOURCE" button, because I hate when a site makes you go to the individual post before getting to the source. Big Props on that.

  • I’m patting you on the back for a job well done!
    Hey Matthew,

Just wanted to say that although I do miss categories a bit and hope to see them brought back in some incarnation, I find that the search gives me good results. I too go to PT for very specific things - to look at how other designers have treated Lists in a unique way, for example. But searching Lists seems to give me a fair amount of valuable stuff & the "Related" area is cool too.

I didn't read all comments so I'm sure this has probably been mentioned, but not being able to right-click and save an image is a downer. I'm still old school enough to keep hard copies of inspiration bits. I get around it fine by taking a snapshot, but it's something to think about - especially for newer users.

Overall I love the updates and am using Alpha from here on out!

  • I’m missing pt
Hello there. I am on Firefox and I have been unable to view any images on PT for the last week. I see the thumbnail images on the home page, but they disappear once I drill down. This might be a bug.

    Thanks, Megan
