  • I like this idea but my question is what commission rate would PhotoMerchant make from payments like this? Would it be the same as the rate of the print sales?

  • That's all completely up in the air. The plan was to put the idea 'out there' and see if this was the kind of feature that people wanted.

Can I suggest that if PhotoMerchant is going to charge anything that it should be a nominal fee, eg. $10 rather than a percentage. It would be in PhotoMerchant's interest for photographers to book more sessions because then there would be more photos that they can make a profit from when they are ordered by direct fulfillment!

We're still a way-off from implementing this solution and we'll be considering alternatives to the percentage on bookings. Great suggestion Fiona.

Many business models near me charge a fee to clients that is nominal (like $15) zero as a studio/shoot fee.

They offer to provide this directly for groups and charities such as School, Kinder, Playgroup, Sporting Group etc and they pass the sitting studio fee to the group as incentive to gain extra clients to the shoot and raise cash.

This offer normally comes with a free 5x7 or up to 8x10 image in a wallet and is pretty standard for fund raisers around the Wimmera where I live and shoot.

The studio or photographer then makes up the rest of their profit with images that are sold afterwards..

This also means the photographer needs to be a better sales person to incentify the deal and make sales other than the basic get ya in the door shot..

I suppose, my question is how would PM accomodate these sorts of business models, ie (would it be a simple split to pay the fulfilment from a fee per client, per sale item number or per photo? where the payment is paid by PM instead of a photographer and would it require a simple addition of a code to process..

I think I would like to work at this idea a little more if possible as it is a good market for taking on traditional bulk national photo sales companies that have eaten up these smaller markets.

This is a great idea - from the small business course I studied, the idea was it's best to make sure your fee can generate you profit because at the end of the day, your client will have a gallery and may never buy additional prints, thus no extra revenue.

I would say PM shouldn't take a slice of shoot fees/deposits and continue with their slice on print/product sales. The other way of looking at it is products engage PM's resources whereas intangible orders (like this fee/deposit) don't. Paypal will take their slice anyway so we need to account for that too :(
