Limit number of resubmits within a defined time period.

I brought up this subject eight months ago, but now with Pixoto seemingly willing to do something about overrepresented images within a category, it seems timely that they also address the problem of constant resubmits that voters have to see day after day, month after month.

I'm not talking about daily resubmits. Most of us, who know how the game is played, will submit an image, and let's say it starts out 0-4. We resubmit. It goes to 2-5. We resubmit again because the voting pool is constantly changing and suddenly our image, which we feel is a quality image, is 7-0 and now has a good chance to move up in the ranks. To me, that's almost a necessity on a site where voters vote for a variety of reasons, and very seldom is it to select the better image, if your image is in the same category as theirs.

I have seen so many images in the Animal category resubmitted every single day since the beginning of the year. I'm not going to point them out and embarrass the togs, but anyone who checks the daily leaderboard in certain categories knows who these togs are. One tog will even delete a shot if it's in the number 5 position if one of my shots is ahead of his, and then we see this same shot again the next day and the next day and so on. If one of the goals of this site, as stated by Jason awhile back, is to keep the site fresh and new with fresh and new images for people to vote on, then something needs to be done about these serial resubmitters.

My recommendation is the following, and feel free to weigh in on this suggestion because I think it's an important one:

Limit the number of resubmits of a single image to 5 within a one month period. This means that any image you want to submit can only be resubmitted five times within that time period. This does not mean that if you only resubmit it 2 times that you can carry over 3 resubmits in the following month. There should be a time limit, say 3 months from the end of the month in which you resubmitted the same image, no matter if it was once or 5 times, before you can again resubmit that image. That gives everyone a possible total of 20 resubmits of the same image over the course of a full year.

The reality here is that if after 5 resubmits...your original submission during the month counts as a resubmit...your image has failed to get to the score level you feel it deserves...it's probably never going to get there and you need to move on and try something else...something new and something fresh.

If we want to help make this a better site with better standards, a site that has the ability to be ranked high on the list of legitimate photo sites, we need to get rid of the repetitive and boredom factor that is now pervasive on this site and move it in a positive direction, where we can all be proud to say we're members of Pixoto.

Thus endeth the lesson for today. :)

  • Maybe this is harsh, but I think that if a photo won any award above the week's award, it should not be allowed to be resubmitted at all.

  • John, I like your idea very much. I resubmit images but do it exactly the way you yourself do it, as you described above. As you say, it's the way the game is played :-)

Unfortunately, I can immediately see how some of the contributors here would get around this by submitting "similar" photographs instead of the exact same ones. Other than having this be one more thing that we all would be expected to report, is there a way this strategy could be defeated ahead of time?

  • Lenore, human nature and human egos being what they are, I think most togs who submit a shot over and over and over do so because that shot is the best of the lot, even if they took a large series of shots of the same subject at the same settings, there is some flaw, usually in clarity or pose, that made them pick the shot they entered. Many togs, whose egos are big enough that they fully believe that by resubmitting the same shot or shots day after day and month after month, they will, at some point, be vindicated and receive a high enough score to satisfy that ego, also like to retain the laudatory comments they have been given, which would be lost if they deleted it and submitted a similar image.

So to answer your question, I think ego will take care of the potential problem you bring up, without causing further reporting headaches for the general member public.

  • John - I really like this suggestion and have added something like this to the dev queue.

  • John, Lenore, I follow the same approach of submitting as well.
Actually I think a mechanism is in place already... I hitted it by coincidence today
I don't know exactly, but after 3rd or 4th resubmit, resubmit stopped working.
Button is stil shown, confirmation popup as well, but the resubmit is simply no longer excecuted...

  • Yes Ad, that was put into place some time after this discussion happened and there is now a limit on how many times Pixoto lets users resubmit images :-)

It's true that there is a limit to the number of times you can resubmit an image, however what is in place now is only a partial solution since all one has to do is delete the image and then simply submit it again.

The ideal solution would work something like this: allow a tog to resubmit an image for a total of seven days, with no limit per day on resubmits. Once the tog has gone into their seventh day of resubmitting the same image, it will be blocked from resubmission for three months. When the three month period is up, the tog gets another seven days of resubmits and so on. This, to me, seems like more than enough time to let that image appear in duels with a chance to achieve as high a score as possible. I have seen many images posted almost every day since the beginning of the new year, and that's absurd. At some point one has to put their ego aside and realize that that particular image is never going to score as high as you want it to, and you need to let it go and show us some of your other work, which will hopefully do better.

  • I have to say in this case i think your wrong but the intention is good, i have resubmitted images from several weeks back that flopped originally, but when resubmitted with a fresh voting pool they have done really well !

But that's all by the by now because its all gone ahead anyway, my real grumble at this stage is simply this........

Why the hell couldn't you tell us about it, if people don't see this side of the site or if they miss a thread they have no bloody idea what is going on !

You change the rules but keep it to your selves then someone jumps up and shouts cheat when someone gets it wrong !!!

Instead of "adding something like this to the dev queue." Jason can you just send out an update email ?
