I find that for some time, the pictures submitted in the category 'Nature up-close' contain more and more flowers or animals, which are not changing of cat despite the postponement that can be done.

This is a situation that has already been reported without any effect... so I have a question: what do we do to get the people in charge of this to do their job properly?

I admit that I am a little upset by this situation.

Hi Gerard, I will ask report team to go through Nature up close category and check incorrectly categorized images.

    • This is so true!
Jasenka (or Scott), I don't know who is in charge of report team, but please make sure they put a little more serious effort into this.
    • The same could be said for “Landscapes” category.  Lots of man made objects that take up most of the frame showing up there.

  • Judy,
I hope you will be more lucky than me. I made many reports, mails and even open a subject here WITHOUT result.
the person in charge seems to be deaf or is still confined. It’s starting to piss me off

  • Here is an update:

Unfortunately, you identified an issue where we were losing (specifically) re-categorization reports during the last several months.  They were being discarded due to a check that incorrectly determined if they should be ignored based on the age of the image (images > 6 months old should not allow re-categorization reports).  We fixed this issue on 6/17/20.

On a positive note, We are currently undergoing a major overhaul to the reporting system. Starting sometime next week, you will receive a confirmation message of your report and a further message when the report is resolved.   This is phase 1 of our new reporting system.  We plan on greatly extending the functionality of the initial reporting process as well as the handling of reports once they have been received.

    • Regarding (2): I don't think you introduce a bias in general. Actually attention to reported pictures is what you want. Besides that, the advantage of automation is much higher than the incidental situation where bias plays a role. And in general members don't like wrong pictures in a category, so I think they tend to confirm the report and not ignore the voting, which in the end might even lead to more votes. As said, I see this is used elsewhere...
    • Regarding (3):
Exactly, not re-categorizing them, mark them visible, and freeze votes. Disallowing awards is not really need I think because when the stop receiving votes, they most likely won't end up in the top anymore.

There are however a few things to think over:
      a) abuse
I members start abusing this mechanism (to kick out high scoring images) they must be warned once and banned after the 2nd or 3rd time they do this.
      b) wrong reports shortly before handing out the awards
Cannot be solved: should be taken care of like above.
But engaging users or reported images, like you intend to do as I read below, is also important in this case.
      c) late reports after the rewards
Also hard to solve. But with a beter functioning report team this might occur less often I would say. Hopefully members of the report team are covering "around the globe - hours" as you would not be able to manage this from the US.

By the way, automating the process by letting multiple users to confirm the reports (so as mentioned under (2) ) will drastically lower cases (a) (abuse) and (b) (last minute wrong reports)

  • Update: We increased staffing on the report team (currently in training).   We also greatly improved the report resolution process and automated a lot of it in order to make reports more automated.

The last phase of this process will now be on engaging the user whose images were reported for resolution.

  • Update: We have continued to improve the reporting systems efficiency so that reports are resolved in a more timely manner.   We just did another release today that expands on that.  Since it has grown fairly large we have also implemented processes for accountability on our report team.  By the end of this month, we will be able to ensure that all newly submitted images are reviewed by the team on a daily basis.
