Over-represented subjects

In order to keep the Pixoto site fresh and interesting we will sometimes ask that our members refrain from submitting certain types of images.

Current Site Wide images we will not be accepting on new submissions (starting October 16th, 2014):

- close-ups of water lilies with water drops

- close-ups of a single rose with water drops

- non-native american women wearing native american head dresses

- photos of the columns at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

- this railway bridge photographed from a similar angle to the one in this shot: http://www.pixoto.com/images-photogra...

  • I guess Pixoto as well as some of these so called "photographers" don't know what general photography rules of thumb and general composition are. When following these guidelines, you are going to end up with similar but not the same shots from many different photographers.

So now not only do us ARTISTS have idiots telling us how to edit photos, now we have idiots telling us where to place our cameras and how to compose a shot.

  • Maybe instead of adding these restrictions, the photographers who violate the rules more than 3 times should not be allowed on the site anymore. Someone who is constantly posting the same kind of pictures over and over again should not be allowed to do so after doing it so many times. The rules clearly state no similar images. They are doing it on purpose so they can keep winning which is not fair to everyone else.

    • I disagree with a complete ban from the site. How about a ban for a certain amount of days when they break the rules. I believe they contribute to the site, they just over do it. You can make the ban time frame greater each time they break the rules. If you completely ban them, we may lose access to their work. Some people need inspiration so that they can try to improve their own work.

  • I think the problem is the "over-represented" photos receive positive reinforcement from success of contests in which a "layman" is judging it's quality. The problem is the contest. The fix should not be censorship and micromanaging style and composition rather it should be tweaking the voting process and algorithms etc to prevent overstimulation or overSIMULATION of s successful format. I get sick of seeing formulaic compositins. "General Compositinal Rules of Thumb" are the antihesis of creativity. Pixoto process encourages a LACK of creativity because it stigmatizes taking risks.

  • I'd like to see this same banning of similar images in a professional gallery contest. ALL artists will laugh at you if you tried saying, nope can't submit that, there's already two other artists that submitted similar images....

Thomas Dodd has MANY similar images. Some of his stuff would be banned on this site and I find that rather pathetic.

    • and many professional photography or gallery competitions or exhibitionsDO in fact curate the work so that only a limited number of works actually make the competition or exhibition. Pixoto is not curated, but they ask us to follow guidelines to make them a)profitable for stock photography- which would probably mean offering a great variety of work in each category
b)fair and competitive for everyone (listening and responding to majority complaints)
      c)interesting for people to join.

  • Gee--I'd better get my rose submitted now! lol I think I have 3 or 4 roses with "waterdrops"--generally because I have shot them right in the rain or shortly thereafter!! More challenging that way!

But, as to the comments on non-native people wearing those awful fake headdresses, as a Native American, I do find that a bit offensive! However--if it's a "costume" I suppose that it could be considered an "artistic thing"--hate to tell people what they can or can't use in a shoot.

  • I've been observing the threads of this site and i found out that while most of the members are asking help what they gonna do to "enjoy having business with this site" there are few members who are complaining because:
    1. they can't win (cash prize, awards) and because of this they pissed off especially if the same tog dominated wins i a certain category.
    2. they can't appreciate the work of others.
    3. the pixoto team or site doesn't meet what they want.
    4. the worst part is, they want to change the uniqueness of pixoto. (duel system, cash prizes,) which they're about to succeed.
    5. They want also to change how members play in this site.

Pixoto team you're business is very popular especially i think in South East Asia,
please don't discourage them just because few members complain about how they do their work.

  • Can I just point out that I find it strange that when I upload a photo or two, I get lots of notifications for follows and likes and I get a ton of badges pretty consistently.

The minute I stop uploading, I get nothing. No favorites, one or two follows in a 6 month period, and no badges whatsoever.

This seems to me that uploading is a huge factor in whether you get noticed.

So it makes sense that people will start uploading the same crap photo over and over. Because they want attention. And the algorithm seems to favor that mentality. So rather than limiting what you can upload, why don't you fix the system so it doesn't shut people off if they "don't participate."

If this is a site for showing off work, why do I have to constantly upload stuff to get my work shown off?

(This isn't meant to brag or anything. This is a fact. Any badge I have, I got in a short window of time just after I uploaded the photos. After that window, the numbers stayed the same (some even went down), and no badges have since been achieved)

  • Ive never submitted anything to Pixoto so I guess I am wondering what the issue really is. Is there not some designated rules, guidelines and general oversight of what can be submitted? Does Pixoto lay out general guides and if not why not? I'm new here so I would like to understand, not trying to be antagonistic just trying to understand what the issue is. That way I can comply when I decide to participate if that is what I feel is appropriate. Thanks for the direction and opportunity to comment here.

  • @Jason Kiefer

"We also will be prohibiting certain photographers from submitting subjects that are highly over represented in their portfolio. "

Uhhh, so you're going to punish photographers because they focus on a specific genre?

    Good luck with that.

Also, what survey? I didn't see a survey. Who did you ask? How many of them did you ask? Do they shoot a little of everything? Could they be biased?

I mean, this is kind of a silly discussion to even be having. Why even bother having a photo site, if you're going to tell people who don't work for you, what they can and can't upload?

In my mind art is unique and new, if I can't exhibit something new then my efforts are just waisted, just my personal opinion here but I guess that is what you all are after is opinion correct.

  • I think this is a good idea. I started taking photography classes last year and the restrictions they impose on you force you to take better shots and think more about your composition, lighting, etc... ESPECIALLY when you are learning film. I'm seeing a difference, so I'm taking some of my old shots off the site...and putting up new ones... (I'll keep them safe as they do help you see your progress...)... thanks...!

Okay, I just thought of something else.. you can't really restrict subjects because they are "overdone". when I first started learning and didn't know a thing about composition, I took the "classic" shots, learned the rules of a good composition first, then you learn to break the rules... that's how you master things and move on to bigger things...I guess now we would be eliminating people who just started out which also wouldn't be fair.... so there are good points on both sides here...

RESTRICTION VS EMPOWERMENT: How about actually doing something useful that improves this site rather than restricting users? Rather than trying to tell artists what they need to create to provide you with the quality content (for free) that allows your site to exist maybe you should consider empowering people with the option to "opt out" of voting in certain categories. Over represented images that are no longer engaging people would stop seeing as many votes and people would start submitting to more popular categories. I for one get real tired of being shown wedding shots (and shoes) for example, by around the 5th image in a category I'm not interested in you're hardly getting much thought out of me in my vote. Let the users actively develop their "own" experience in the duels. Maybe spend a little time actually policing the submissions to make sure they are in the correct category. For example a child carefully posed looking straight into the camera is not "candid". Don't have the time to police your site? The answer is simple; offer members the option to report wrongly categorized images (maybe adding a point incentive) and when a couple dozen people all report the same image temporarily suspend the image from duels and send a message to the poster to re categorize it (with suggested categories and send some points to the users that helped you). If you empower the community rather than restrict it you may just find life a whole lot easier.

As for me i signed up to this site to enjoy, learn, earn, appreciate the different togs' photos. if the rule change, as other says here it's for the good of the site(but with this rule i'm not sure). good luck to evey one here. vote again for my lilies and bridges after 6 months. • I’m happy
I agree!! I think there should be more simplicity . I think HDR IS GETTING OUT OF HAND AS WELL. What ever happen to just pure natural with some editing, Not everyone can compete with the HDR. I do HDR only for some things . I just don't think it is fair to the people who have just beautiful natural pics that are not picked. that is my thoughts I know there will many who won't agree. Thats ok.. I am a naturalist . What can I say
    • I agree. I think some people overdo HDR. I personally have never tried it myself. I think some pictures look good with it, but it seems more and more people are doing it. I like more natural pictures, too.
    • Firstly HDR is merely a technique to provide a photographic style, this style may be to represent a natural looking image - currently no camera cannot portray the scene we see using out naked eye, HDR is just a means to expand the tonal ranges to provide greater rnage in both shadows and highlights, making more representative to that seen by our naked eye, it can be used to provide that 'natural look'. So banning the use of HDR would prevent photographers a means to represent the true scene and there goes against your preference for ypur natural images. Photography is art, therefore please do not try to dictate what tools, processes and visual outcomes make a good picture, we all see the world through different eyes.

  • Charlie....this sort of problem is aimed at photographers like you that have over 200+ images of the same image (Lilys). Do you not think that you should try something different.

I am not against the restriction of the image just the restriction of the togs submitting the same type of image again and again whether it wins the daily/weekly competition or not. Its not specialism its repetitive.

    That goes the same for:

Bridges, Eagles, tigers, roses, gerbera, wine glasses with coloured backgrounds, rusty faucets, temples, brown coloured streets etc etc.

  • This restriction will result in more grief than it is worth in my opinion, there is no clear line of when a subject is over represented, for example why is a close of a rose with water drops more represented then a sunset on a coast, it just happens that someone has decided they are bored with roses with water drops? Both provide opportunity for individual interpretation and both results in some outstanding images on Pixoto. Photography is about the individual being able to capture a subject seen from their view point and hopefully with some individual style, the subject matter is immaterial it is the photographic style that is important.

At the end of the day - if people are bored with seeing a particular image style, they will not vote for it and therefore it will not be featured prominently on Pixoto.

There is also the argument that a photographer should concentrate his photography on a subject that he\she knows well and appreciates, You need to know your subject well to photograph it well, very important in natural history photography but equally applicable in other genres. So are we saying someone who loves bird photography and has a beautiful portfolio of bird images is no longer welcome? In my case I love woodland photography, my portfolio includes a large percentage of woodland images and I take pride in the fact I have developed a style and expertise in being able to capture the light of woodland images, this has only been developed by taking many woodland shots, submitting for review and then developing improvements based on feedback.

Please think again - this is not a well thought out restriction.
    • view 7 more comments
    • I must admit I have not noticed this occurring but I don't post images with the aim to win cash, I merely post to get feedback on my images.

Perhaps Pixoto should look to refine the voting method, perhaps a second vote for finalists should be based on scores combined on the following criteria

      Creativity
      Technical difficulty
      Composition
      etc

      or

A winner selected by a Pixoto board to ensure creativity is considered.

Anyway there must be a better option to placing censorship on the majority for the sake of a few.

My main concern is with the stance that photographers should not have large percentage of images in their portfolio on a similar subject. Many good photographers do specialize on certain photographic genres and they do this is to become proficient in capturing the essence of that particular subject matter, it is an approach to developing a photographic style.

People take 50 identical images of which 1 is extremely good, but by no 15 becomes boring and around 45 it becomes a pain. I love flower photography but would like to see a variety. And the cherry on top is that every single image wins an award. Amazing!

  • Very controversial. What I am getting is that nobody likes bans and rules stink. However, no one has said that you cannot continue to TAKE photos of whatever you want, just asking you to refrain from POSTING every single shot of wet roses and lilies. (Which from what I have seen are over posted anyway) I also understand that the ban is temporary and will probably grow to consume other over posted, redundant images. I take it as a positive move and an encouragement to expand ones horizons and portfolio. Don't get angry, just get busy.

  • At last you do something about this. I am new on this site , not even 1 year, but from the beginning I complain about this. Nobody give me reason, so I quit. When we can ́nt win we join the majority. if they do it why should I be the one who does ́nt. There are champions of points with 40 images ( more or less) How is this possible. Someone here said that stop this is censure. I do NOT think so, it is to admit a violation of the rules. My photos are in there majority very different and eclectics. but to honest recently I start to introduce some photos similar. I protest against this at a long time without response, so I join the group. I think that it works, because at last someone see this.

    • But where do you draw the line? If I look at your portfolio - you posted a lot of excellent images of classic subjects found in Venice, like me you taken images which are very popular iconic scenes - in my opinion they are perfectly acceptable posts but with these restrictions a great view of London Bridge, a rainbow or Venice will be disallowed. Why because they are popular - it makes no sense to me. If people get bored of seeing the same type of images do not vote for them.
    • People who have been on this site for some time might not vote for the similar pics any longer, but there are lots of new members every day and since for them, these photos are new stuff, they WILL vote for them, thus preventing other people of getting a chance to see their own, TRULY new pics rise. Surely you must see a difference between shots of cities, nature, landscapes, from people from all around the world, and what we are seeing here: serial shots taken all from the same POV (or almost), without even bothering to choose an original view each time?

  • How about including those Bloody repetitious Indonesian boats, and those Indonesian fishermen throwing nets. they should have been included in this right from the start.

  • LOL, you can't really restrict subjects because they have been overdone! so where do you draw the line here, OK lets think about this, I know BAN EVERYTHING

Cats, Dogs, birds, Landscapes, Seascapes, Portraits, Flowers, and!

And the list goes on and on, we are talking about Art here and every image is different in some way, one in colour one in black and white, it the sane image in this case but its still very different.

Pleas tell me what is the point of being on Pixoto if we can't post what we capture and see as photographers

  • I am sorry, this is not talk seriously about this issue. The problem here is not as far as I can understand, similar photos of different photographers or about cats or sunsets. Different cats give different photos, and different places give different sunsets. The problem here is to photograph a railway, in ten different angles with 1 meter of difference and post them as different photos, by the same photographer. Is to photograph the same flower, one centimeter at one side, one cm up or down. That ́s the issue, and I agree that this must change. Not only pervert the contest as turn it a non creative site. That ́s what I think. of course.

  • I’m sad
It's about time. Too bad rules weren't followed in the first place and complaints about those repetitive subjects weren't acted upon when the piled up initially. I put in many reports on those repetitive water lilies when I first joined and just gave up when they kept appearing. I thought, "why bother, no-one cares." I get reports that my images are in the wrong category (someone reported me they said), but those water lilies just kept coming like a flood. Everyone probably gave up reporting after a while as well. I still put my images up to see how they compare with others, but it makes me sad to see that abusers are not monitored after many reports and requested to stop breaking the rules or compete elsewhere.

  • Completely agree with this..so tired of seeing blondes wearing Native American traditional attire after their ancestors did nothing but abuse steal and kill them. As for it just being a 'costume' thats even more offensive than seeing some one wear what they wore back then. These werent costumes they were actual coverings for them and they took pride in that. Children ...ok they are kids and they want to dress up but as adults you would think people would have more common sense and courtesy to not do that.

  • What problem is Pixoto trying to solve here? Sure, when you have thousands of photographers of varying sophistication submitting shots, you're going to get the inevitable cliche pics. Of course, if there are offensive shots (e.g., Native American Headdress) they should be banned, but banning repetitive or certain types of photos is a slippery slope. The fact is that non-traditional photos and shots are not "rewarded" very much by the community. For my own shots, the more I like the picture the fewer votes it gets. I look around and see the birds and water and stuff so put one of those up and voila...I get a prize...So, I have to put up snapshots to get prizes, so I lose interest. Is that the problem?

Two suggestions: Maybe Pixoto should ENCOURAGE the behavior it wants rather than banning the behavior that it doesn't (especially because it is subjective). Secondly, at least start by making a category called "No Photoshop" so that we separate the photographers from the graphic artists (no value judgement, just a point)

  • TO be honest, lifting the limit on how many times you can skip an image in the voting process would go along way to alleviating the frustration of seeing similar photos repeatedly.
