Similar images

There are several photos I would consider to be very similar in the birds section of wildlife. I was wondering if that is okay under the rules. I have several photos that I took in the past couple of weeks of Blue-winged teals but haven't posted them because of the rules. All those pictures are great shots but how can I compete with someone who is posting many shots of the same subject in different poses or angles. Im not complaining about not getting points or wins but it is hard to compete with several eagle shots that are flooding the pool. I post a few shots a week and I really try to make them as different as possible from each other and it's a bit discouraging to see what I consider to be very similar images.

  • I agree we need to know what is "sustantually different" but the Eagles for instance are all different and often from several different photographers, its te same with the flood of bugs eyes seems to be loads of them at the moment, ?

  • Jeff, just start with one or two. If they are not duplicates or photoshopped and they are nice, they will get their points. Especially birds pictures, imo they are not easy ones. I, personnally, really appreciate them, I keep trying but it's difficult, especially flying birds make me crazy. I hope one day I will get one

    • We would agree that there are several pairs or triplicates of "very similar" images here and will make the adjustments.
    • Sure this is difficult to shoot different picture of this water bug but it's easy to post only 1 or two of them and not hundreds

  • I agree that clarification is needed, I have shot for 16 years and have several shots up where the use of shadows and light are the primary difference. To me a shot with a forced shadow that silhouettes the figure is substantially different. I am glad though that they have not moved to backdate the rule, there are many shots up that are similiar by current enforcement that could throw the rankings into turmoil if they backdated the enforcement.

It also bears noting that users that have hundreds of shots up make honest mistakes and that once a weekly or monthly award is given the shot should be left alone. For those photos without an award or in the current week's contest I can see making the correction.

  • they should be in the "1000 up" category I just proposed. Nowhere else. A boring category for boring people.

  • I’m frustrated, aggravated
Im so frustrated with this site because in every category.. all the top people in ALL categories are submitting many many of the same pictures or the same subject, either tightly cropped, then another further out, slight angle change...etc. How can anybody compete when they flood the categories with the same over and over and over.

It's frustrating and it's what is preventing me from purchasing a pro account.

    • I think the only way to really avoid this is to limit the number of submissions an individual can upload into each category/subcategory at any one time. Say 3-5.
    • Limit it to 5 per category per week. That is one way to keep it fair. I have gone out and had several shots in sequence of one subject but I only post a couple. There are guys in the bird category that have very similar shots of the same bird and they post every one of them and then they take some of their photos and either crop them or convert them to black and white and then re-post them. If you go to the birds page right now you will see it for your very eyes. Click on the picture and go to the persons page and look at his top photos and you can see what I am talking about. #1 award after #1 award of the same photos. We shouldn't have to moderate this site, the people abusing the so called rules should have been spoken to already by the administrators. They probably haven't because they have pro accounts. I'm not going to spend hard earned money on a pro account so I can have no chance of possibly winning anything due to the fact that there are some people that feel it necessary to post eagle shots from the same day, same bird, but with a slight head turn or just cropped different.

Yes it's very tiresome and time consuming to scroll through another person's page to point out the duplicates. When we see them in duels, there's no way to tell that we're not seeing the same image. One person had more than a hundred submissions in the flower sub-category last week alone.

One interesting side of this issue is that bugs, flowers, etc. are moving objects, transient as it were in the landscape. Difficult to take the same shots really consistently day after day - so many (but not all) of the repetitive nature shots are shot in one go. The landscape, architecture, and other relatively constant subjects rely on angles, light, background, framing, etc. to ensure that they are less repetitive.

This fellow - http://www.pixoto.com/jberneugenio?ca... - clearly goes to this venue time and again to take similar photos

Many folks do this - they find the "winning" formula and continue to exploit it ad nauseum instead of trying new things - their loss and boring for the rest of us.

And I think I have found one of the folks who believes in submitting at least several pics of the same subject every day - those candle and open book shots which I thought were all one photo ... and loads of bird pics seconds apart I should think
