Some of us have noticed that a particular user has moderated some challenges and then picks her own photograph as the winner.

Why is this allowed? Can Brittney Lynn be stopped from moderating?

  • Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the votes determined the winner. I know they call it "Judge's Award" but I just thought that was the name designated for first place.

If that is true, that the moderator picks the overall winner, then I will have to rethink entering challenges. I have taken second place in a challenge and if second place really meant first place in votes, then that's unfair :-)

This is all news to me, I assume 'Judges Award' meant that the moderator could give an award, not actually pick the winner.
If the moderator can actually pick the winner, I feel cheated.
If not then I think it's perfectly OK for moderators to enter their own challenges, I would assume most challenges are create because the person suggested the contest has a photo they feel have a chance to win.
I hope we hear from the PIXOTO team on this one.

  • surely votes do count, otherwise why do we have to vote on all those challenges we have no interest in?

  • Hello all, Community challenge moderator decide on the "Judge's Award" (the top award) as stated when creating the challenge.

Regarding this issue I will forward this information and let you know.

Can you please provide link to the challenges? For some reason I'm unable to find any challenges by that user. I would really appreciate it.

I had a look for them and couldn't find them also.

I though the Challenge moderator had the option of letting the winner be decided by vote or pick the winner themselves.

It's a pretty hollow victory to pick your own pic as the winner.

  • This is wild, and news to me. Here I thought the challenges were above-board! So it could be that when I placed second in a challenge, I really won it?

I have stated before that moderators should not be allowed to enter into their own challenges, and now I feel even stronger about that.

OR AT LEAST, have the information up-front and obvious and not a secret that the challenge winner will be picked by the Moderator so people can make a decision about whether or not they want to enter.

  • This particular moderator currently has several open challenges: Rabbits, ROSES, Skulls, Best of - Horses, and The Color YELLOW. All of her closed challenges seem to have disappeared.

People put a lot of thought and effort into submitting photos into a challenge. Very disappointing to find that in some cases the deck has been stacked.

  • Jasenka, you said above, "If you open closed challenge, when you hover over photo number of votes and image score in challenge for each photo is shown."

I just tried that and it didn't work. I tried it in both a Pixoto-sponsored challenge and a Community challenge. I'm using Windows 8.1 (and Firefox).

The two challenges I posted I let the votes speak and the top voted image was given the Judges Award by Pixoto.

Pixoto makes a big mistake by letting the contest moderator pick the winner, as evidenced by this thread. Also, judges can be tempted to pick friends images and then the whole concept of the community challenges begins to unravel and become irrelevant.

    • It seems like most challenges are pretty fair and I doubt if the moderator actually enters their own photos into it. But then again, I haven't paid much attention until I looked at the top photos of one challenge I had entered. After a few glances at the other challenges that coincidentally closed at the same time it became glaringly obvious. That's why I felt the need to post something.
    • I think most moderators do enter their images into the challenge; however, as a rule, and I sincerely hope this is the case, is that they allow voting to determine the winners. In many ways, it is a great way to be much more specific than the categories ever are and your image can be judged against the same subject matter. I'm hopelessly OCD about rules and think I'd get way to carried away about disqualifying images. I sincerely hope that Pixoto does away with allowing the moderator to pick the winner.

  • The biggest point that I would like to make to you fellow Pixoto members and the Employees is that if it weren't allowed in the first place, I couldn't have done it.

I have created many community challenges in the past and have awarded the Judges Award to who I think is most deserving(not referring to myself) or I let Pixoto choose the Judges Award based on who received the highest Image score.

I recall some while back noticing that a user on this site had awarded themselves a Judges Award in a contest that they moderated/created. I didn't know that was something that you could do, so I tried it...and it worked. My thought process at the time was "Pixoto allows you to choose your own image to win, rewarding you with a lot of credits!" Sounded good, considering how long it would take to 'earn' the credits that I would win along with the award. (I also want to make clear that giving myself the award was entirely for the credits involved, NOT because I though my image was the best)

I understand the annoyance that many of you hold against me for choosing myself in the community challenges that I have moderated. It was a crumby thing to do and it was entirely unfair. I wish that I could go back and choose different images as the winners, but I can't do that. - I just got too enthralled in the idea of effortlessly obtaining a large amount of credits.

I have learned my lesson! I assure you that with the challenges that I currently have running and challenges that I will create in the future, they will be 100% fair. I will be awarding the Judges Award to the picture that I truly feel is most deserving.

As I stated earlier, I am not the first Pixoto member to have done this. - Perhaps Pixoto should make it so that you CANNOT award yourself with the Judges Award.

    • Since we all know that Pixoto staff CAN do this, I'm thinking you did not make that specific request from them. Pixoto can also delete any photo you request, those requests are made in this very forum all the time.

So, the ball is back in your court. Will you state, publicly, right here that you are requesting that you want those credits removed from your account and that you want those photos of yours deleted?
    • you can delete them you will lose the award but not credits

  • Pixoto should absolutely make it that the Moderators cannot enter their own images in a Challenge. They should also not be able to pick a winner, as it would be easy to run with two accounts and pick the winner from your other account. Winners should be decided solely on votes.

Until this happens, I know I'm not even going to look at the Challenges page again.

I'm also not going to vote on them, as I don't want to participate in the process. Skip, skip, skip for me :-)

My feeling is that you knowingly cheated the system for your own benefit and reward, and did it more than once. You cheated others out of obtaining credits that they thought they could get by the excellence of their submissions, and what they thought was a fair and equitable community challenge system. The fact that you say someone else had done it is meaningless. This is about you, and for anyone who reads these threads in the community, you have probably lost all respect in terms of honesty and integrity within this site. Whether you like it or not you now join the long list of cheats that have infiltrated Pixoto, and if I was a member of this staff, at the very Ieast, I would ban you from creating and moderating any further community challenges.

I may be wrong, but judging by your first name, you are probably relatively young and have the mindset of most millennials that you somehow deserve things in life without having to really work for them. Just telling people you made a mistake, numerous, actually, after reaping the rewards of your dishonesty, is a meaningless gesture. If John hadn't brought this to the attention of the community you would still be awarding yourself the judges prize, so please don't insult us by saying you have learned your lesson. There needs to be consequences to your actions, and you should be ready to accept them, whatever they may be.

Perhaps all of you butthurt people should be asking Pixoto.com why it is allowed in the first place?

It wouldn't be hard for Pixoto to disable allowing users to choose their own images in challenges.

Get over it and get lives. It's finished.

Grow up Brittney... You did a dirt bag thing and got busted. Blaming it on Pixoto for allowing it in the first place doesn't alleviate your responsibility. People with more integrity than you would have not even considered doing something like that in the first place, whether it was allowed or not. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I never intended to start a fire storm or cause insults to be thrown back and forth, I simply noticed the issue and thought it was worth discussion.
I will also be more careful what challenges I enter. It hasn't even been mentioned that it does cost credits to submit to a challenge as well. Perhaps the entrants to the challenges should be issued refunds.
Okay, I jest. I'm moving on. Hopefully Pixoto can make some changes.

  • The rule allows it, so why not try it? Community Challenges are a trash and the only benefit that I can see is that It uses a lot of credits for Pixoto to benefit. More challenges, more credits -- that means more people will vote to have credits or BUY credits in $$$.

Don't trail your guns on Brittney, she just created a challenge and followed the rules created by Pixoto. And why question her if she find her photo better than the rest? Aren't we all like our own work?

We maybe looking at same subject, but we always see it differently.

She didn't find her work better than the rest, she merely awarded herself the award so she would get the credits.

Bottom line is she is a cheat. The fact that Pixoto does not state one must not pick one's own image as winner to one's challenge, does not, in any way, get her off the hook. I don't imagine Pixoto staff ever thought they would have to spell out something so blatantly obvious as that. To paraphrase Susan, "it was a dirt bag thing to do." Unfortunately there are people on this site who will do anything to win something, whether credits or cash, and have no compunction in doing so.

Pixoto needs to spell out a rule, under the challenge section, that clearly states: Contest moderators may not enter their own challenges. Period.
