This really needs to be addresses to take this seriously or you have been hacked.

I'm new to this...yep just today. As I voted I notice a definite level for most of the pics. Sure I agree there is room for taste but then I started to open the best of pics. I saw the same pictures from the same photographer, same model, same Indian headdress same airbrush same edit, same crop all rated in the 700's bla bla bla. WAIT some were turned into B&W and still in the 700's. http://www.pixoto.com/amond.ramandhar... If we are going to take this seriously and feel comfortable that you are on the up and up...how can this happen. In some shots all she did is turn her head an inch and still rates 700 for the same pic. Notice I did not say anything about the quality of editing...individual taste I'm sure and I'll leave that up to others to judge but in my book these are the same pictures for the last year...well almost. There is a model that has the same headdress on as 8 months before. 8 months ago she scored in the 600's only the editor forgot to take out her bloodshot pink eye and she still is scored in the 600.

I saw this below...after you look at this photographers page...how can this be true.

Officially the new rule will be:
NO VERY SIMILAR IMAGES: You may submit an unlimited number of images but each one must be substantially different from the others. You may however delete an image and resubmit it at any time. If reported, and we agree that the images are not distinct enough, the newer image will be deleted. This is critical for keeping the Pixoto community vibrant, exciting and fun.

Haha...welcome to the Pixoto madness!!! Do you have any ideas how many times this has been addressed already and yet Pixoto always gives you the same answer "we found those photos not very similar"?? It's total bullshit and it will probably never go away as long as Pixoto doesn' change the rules regarding submission of "almost" identical pictures. It's very annoying and frustrating. The only thing you can do is NOT VOTE for those photos.

Not only that...look at these two shots that are both on the leaderboard. They are under two different names and yet they are of the same model with the same clothes and makeup on. I just saw multiple shots of the same people with different names on the leaderboard. I would guess that they are all voting for each other and that is why they are all on the leaderboard. Something smells fishy here....

BTW...on the second picture as with all the pictures on this persons site the "Image Info/EXIF" data has been stripped off. Go figure....

  • Ok it's getting late and I need to get to bed. But here is an amazing example. And this will be the last. I just found it but compare it to the pics on the first photos. It's the same girl. Here is the strange thing. This picture was put up about the same time and yet it only scores a 197 and its still up there. ALL my stuff was paused after a scoring like that. This is really starting to smell.

Yes... I said it before... one of the rules state (DONT POST TOO IDENTICAL/SIMILAR PHOTOS) but most of the "BEST" post 10 to 20 identical photos every-time... portraits and flowers are just 2 good examples...

This morning I went to the leaderboard and decided to just pick the top pic and see how many versions of the same picture the person had. Here is just a few. The disturbing part is the high scores on all of them. I just have a hard time believing that this is the top pic. THE TOP! A score of 800. I will say I thought this site was a great idea. As an investor I wish I had thought of it. But these people that run this have to realize that people are not going to stick around very long when they start to realize this is what is going on....like myself. They should have a "wall of shame" and put you picture on it if it shows up more then once. The voting is what is bothersome. How can the same flower be at the top?

    • Irena...with all due respect. I just went to the leaderboard and this this is the page from the person that took the pic. Seriously you are telling me that this is not gaming the system. Even the bridge shot that are in here are of the same bridge I've seen in other pics over and over again. Wait...over and over again along with the tiger in the zoo. I've looked at some of these flowers on other peoples pages and technically they would never fly in a reproduction. Highlights a blown out and in some there are shadows right across the flower. Yes they are "pretty" flowers but they are just factory pictures that are not of quality. But if they meet your level of satisfaction and you don't mind looking at the same shot over and over again your life will be perfect. I can't imagine walking into a gallery and seeing all of these pictures on the wall See photo way below....as new link
    • Irena, indeed, you had right, this flower deserve to be showned more than once. It's back with another totally new position

  • Hello Rusty, from contest rules: "...only one image of any subject and scene/pose combination is allowed", so if scene/pose and/or subject changes images are not very similar.
    • view 4 more comments
    • Each one of these pics on the top (most) are factory pics. Look on the peoples page if they have a pic of a flower...they are all the same. Over and over again. I say again....wait "you" said....

    • We are obviously stuck with having many very similar images. This could easily be fixed by changing the wording from 'no very similar' to 'no identical', it won't make most of us happy, but we won't have reason to complain.

  • Jasenka, try to understand what we are saying here: imagine a singer who would have a hit song, just ONE hit song, and who would decide that he would never sing anything else because it's so much easier to just change a few notes here and there, change the lyrics a little bit, and then sing that song over and over again with those minor variations on a same theme. What would happen? He would become a laughingstock of his former fans because they would have realised that he's unable (or not too lazy) to produce anything else. Noone would buy his CDs and noone would go to his concerts. Yet this is exactly what you are encouraging here: these people who are too lazy to try something new, once they have had that ONE hit. How can you ever justify that? And please don't give us again that "copy and paste" answer...try to think for yourself.

The street abomination is probably the most irritating...it seems this person simply steps out of his house every morning, takes exactly the same shot from his doorstep - of course, from day to day the light would vary a little bit - then submits it and gets a high prize. And this is what Pixoto labels "photographer of the year"??? This is a joke, right?

  • As I'm sure you all are aware the photos show above do not fall into our definitions of "very similar images" for a variety of reasons (e.g. smiling in one and not the other, taken on different days, different model, one in B&W and one in Color, etc.). I do not think our definition is perfect but it also has been something that we can train our report team to moderate with some consistency.

That said - there is a undesirable by-product of our voting system. Certain images really register with a wide cross section of people and do well in voting. Some photographers then decide - well if the first one did well then maybe I should submit another. It will likely do well too - and will continue to do well each time a different variation is submitted. Since the voting is blind - this is the expected, and desired result.

Unfortunately for some photographers this has gone way overboard. Jasenka and I were talking earlier today and we are formulating a plan to alleviate this problem.

The essence is that we will have overrepresented subjects on a site wide basis and on an individual member basis. More on this later this week.
    • Why do you keep replying with the same copy and pasted answer. You are making yourself look a fool. They ARE THE SAME subject with very minor changes. Your site is becoming mind boggling boring and only for the dim witted . You need to stop the rot and make substantial changes to keep your honest members with you.

If you are looking for diversity and originality then only allow 1 submission of the same scene, object, person, flower type etc etc per weekly competition.
    • view 3 more comments
    • That's true..I forgot about the impossibility to delete a pic. But still, the tog has the original file which he can rename as many times as he wants. Also, if his photo was deleted, he would loose all the awards that go with it, so it kind of defeates the purpose.
    • Yes, but it does happen. I 've seen people request high scoring shots be deleted for re-editing.....And if Pixoto have a copy of the original shot its a matter of moments to check if it has been resubmitted.

I start to comment on these special photos which are NOT very similar. If I do something wrong please official team, let me know or better close my account. It doesn't matter.
Please let me know if something will change.

    • Without us "guests" as you say, Keith, Pixoto wouldn't exist, let's not forget that. And you can wait till hell freezes over for Pixoto to do something about the cheats.
    • So what are the remarks for? Only a pat on the back. If I was doing something technically wrong or could be improved on then I would want to know. If my highlights were almost blown...like within 95% and would not print or reproduce I would want to know about it especially if somebody was going to pay for my product. When the Pixoto people post a rule that says "similar" photos are not allowed and then when almost identical photos (as you agree) are posted and they do nothing that is hurting the people that have a single nice photo they have worked hours/days on and then its paused because it has been flooded out of the system by 50 shots of the same flower. These comments like others are just letting the photog know their feelings. If somebody is coming here to by stock they will key in "blue flower" not look on the "best photo" page. Then they will still see blue flowers even if they are not voted on.

If there is nothing done by the people voting then how will people ever know. I love this concept but there has to be some way to UN-game the system.

Posting 20 shots of the same flower is not asking to be voted on it is gaming the system by flooding a category with your photos of a "blue flower". This hurts the sales of other photographers with one nice picture as they are paused. What we are asking...I think by reading many of these is to have one or two of the similar photos on for selection/competition and feel free to post the rest as "stock".

But hey...like you...I'm just one opinion.

I have to admit that this problem will not be too easy to fix and keep the site going in a way that will let the factory photogs put up their wall of "similar" pictures (simalair as for a bunch of us photographers that are not factories). But if the management and owners feel (as stated above by Jason the owner) that these two pics are not similar then you are right...we are beating our heads against the wall and this site although it could be fun is not for people that think differently about the word similar. That is unfortunate. For myself...I think most of the pics above are similar in any photogs book.

But what the management has to understand is that the last thing a quality "photographer" wants to do is play in this sandbox of factory pictures. Somehow they are ranked with their algorithm at the top???? These factory photographers are playing the system as they understand the rules and play them. So if they (owners) want quality stock and are making money off it then we will slowly fade out of here. If there is not change then it is simple...this is not the site for those of us that disagree over "similar". A bummer but that is just life.

But I would like you to visit Nikša Šapro page again, and you will see that this photographer has great photos in a different categories. • Irena all I'm doing is going to the leader page each time. I don't care what day I go there it's the same thing. So I went this time. I'm not picking on anybody. But this is a great one. This is in the beginning of the nightmare. This person has only been on two / three days. I got there (leaderboard) by clicking on the red flower> IT IS ONLY TURNED upside down and one with no white balance. But yet BOTH area at the top of the leader board. Is it that great of a photograph?

The flower on the left...same shot just recolored (photoshop)...the same shot!!!! The pics of her...same pic one day black and white the next color. Same shot. Look at the last pic.

I don't know about anybody else but it has gotten easy to tell if I click onto a page and it going to be a factory page. Give it a try.
    • Sorry I'm done with this unless something changes. Hope it does and people can sell the product if that is what they are trying to do. It could be a great site with this "factory" photo thing fixed.

If you could just make it so that only two of the same subject or flower could be voted on but the others could be sold...that would be great.

      Best of luck folks.

  • Taking a look at the number 1 pic under people.

Here is another twist. First pic is number #1 when I looked under people. I was stuck on phone hold and decided to look at the leaderboard. You would think they are from all the same photog. NO NO NO. Each one is from a different photographer. Here are the names. HOW CAN THIS BE...if not factory type images.
    Kopi Irenk 751, Eka's D'brandals 667, Khenced Chullund 613, Aloysius Bayurendra 591, Ricky Marcellino 575.

    • Not only are they all photos of the same model but even the post-treatment/airbrushing is identical. If this is not factory photo, I don't know what is. There is no personality whatsoever in any of those pics. And you're right, Will, it's VERY boring.
I really do think the main problem here are the money prizes. All these people are obviously not here for the love of photography, but to make money. As much as I can understand their motivations, this should NOT be the place for it because it spoils it for all the photographers who just enjoy taking a good pic and competing fairly. Remove the money bait and maybe these togs will stop posting hundreds of identical photographs and get for a job.
Jason, I thought you said we would hear more about this? We're still waiting!

  • Basically Pixoto flip-flops on what its raison d'etre is. On Pixoto's link to its stock photos, and other the blurbs written on the internet, you'll find Pixoto bigged up as "The World's Best Stock Images - Millions of votes by real people"

When questioned about the hundreds of near duplicate images a few months back, Jason defended it by stating "First - we are primarily NOT a stock site - we'd like to increase this aspect of the business but currently it is just a small part of what we do" Followed by " Until our stock service takes off I would suggest not thinking about Pixoto as a great place to sell your images - but rather a great place to get feedback on your images and discover new and wonderful images from all over the world. "

However, a quick search on the web finds this:

" Jason B. Kiefer, the Company’s CEO, says there are four main reasons why Pixoto Stock provides a better experience than competing stock service.

Quality and speed: Every photo is rated by the Pixoto Community -- with the best showing up first
Fresh: New images can rise to the top in a matter of hours
Validated: Hundreds of people vote on each image
Unique: These aren’t your typical stock shots. Pixoto photographs are submitted by a community of over 100,000 professional and hobby photographers from around the world"

It then goes on to say " Pixoto’s revolutionary ImageDuel voting system aggregates millions of individual voter preferences to create “leaderboards” of the best images in the world"

They are NOT the best images in the world - that's a ludicrous statement! I'd say that Pixoto is suffering from delusions of grandeur ........ ;-)

  • it might be an idea, instead of doing "similar photo" rule, change the way how the vote is being done. So say I got one 700 club photo in one category then if I put my next photo in the same category then you will start from lower than zero point, and it goes deeper and deeper every consecutive photos in the same category, which means it will discourage people to do the same again and again if that person would like only to get points at the same time still allowing people to do whatever they want to do. I agree, it is boring when see same kind of photos from the same person, but the thing is unless you follow a photographer, it will be very much difficult to know whether the photos is similar or not from particular photographers.
