# WHY ??? Edit Subject

I have seen this happen a few times but it didn't really register until just now !

My image Paused, on 11 wins & 10 losses ? but also with a 3 green i.e. "win" image duel history ?

Why ? What algorithm works out your chances of achieving a high score based on the fact you are actually winning more than losing at the point it decided yo pause you ?

Any answers welcome because like i say its not the first time i have seen it ?

• Ralph, this has happened to me a lot lately too .... an image is paused but it has a lot of duels and has a winning record, often a high score nearing 500 as well.

I think they've rejigged their system..........

Hi Ralph and Lenore, algorithm doesn't check just last 3 duels. Pausing is based on overall image score and number of duels and not on win/loss ratio. If the image is very unlikely to achieve the top 10 percent based on these statistics - it will be paused.

I hope this helps.
• Jasenka, do you mean top 10 percent of all time or top 10 percent for the day?

Lenore, top 10% overall (roughly about 615 ImageScore).

"Why is my image "Paused"?
Images get paused if they are statistically unlikely to move up to the top 10% of all images (approximately 615 ImageScore). Sometimes we determine this within 6 duels sometimes it takes 100. The key is that in order to provide good clarity into which images are in the top 10 we must vote the best images a lot. With a limited amount of duels available to us the best way to accomplish this is by pausing images once we've determined that they are not likely to get near the top. We use statistics so by definition we are not 100% confident that the image should be paused and so to address this issue we added the "get more votes" feature (the "play" button on the leaderboards). Under certain circumstances Paused images may still be placed in to duels and may be unpaused automatically."

• If its had 21 duels and one over 50% of them then jigging or not it shouldn't be paused ! its still winning !!! all it means is i have to do a load more votes to un-pause it again for no good reason ?

Ralph, win will not give you same image score every time. If your photo just started dueling and wins it will get more image score then if it wins when she already has 20 duels. Also, if you win over photo that has less score then your photo you will get less image score, then if your photo wins over photo that has higher image score then your photo at the time of duel.

• Thanks, Jasenka, for your reply above stating that Pixoto pauses our photos if they aren't likely to receive a score of approximately 615. I think this is the root cause of a lot of frustration on the site with respect to this issue -- you don't need a score of 600+ to win an award in most Pixoto categories, and winning *any* award is what I'm guessing most people are shooting for on the site. Not all, but most. Some are only happy with a top-10 placement and that's fine, but I'm sure if you did a poll you'd find that a lot of your members are happy to receive any award, even if it's "only" a 20% award.

I don't know how your algorithm works but I'm thinking that many photos are on their way to at least top 30% of all time, if not 20%, if not for the pausing. It's like Pixoto is saying, "hey, you would have received top 20 percent for the day if we hadn't paused your photo, but we think that placement sucks, so too bad for you."

Pixoto does send out a mixed-message with regards to awards. "Rising Star" awards are given out when a new member achieves a score in the top 40%, but then ... wham! Those awards cease to be issued and new members see their newest photos attain a higher score than their Rising Star awards and yet they receive no recognition. It must be very frustrating and confusing. (I was lucky, my very first posting on Pixoto received a 20% daily award and while I did get some Rising Star awards after that, I was able to continuously do well on the site, although #1 for a week has been close but still hasn't happened.) If I had only received Rising Star awards and then nothing, it would have been quite discouraging I think.

If Pixoto's goal with respect to the pausing is that this is the way it should be so that people purchase Pro memberships so their photos don't get paused, it should be more obvious and upfront that this is an intentional tactic against those of us with free memberships.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now.....
