Sync Plaxo with iCloud

Are there any plans for Plaxo to offer syncing of calendar, contacts etc. with iCloud? This would obviously be the smartest and most logical way to connect with a user's Mac ecosphere, since one end point would update all our Mac & iOS devices.

Also iCloud does not currently support syncing with Google Calendar and Google Contacts so this would offer a good solution. With iCloud now available it does seem that, going forwards, having individual Plaxo apps for OSX and iOS is overkill (at least for the syncing part).

What's the plan?

Thank you for your suggestions Olly.

Unfortunately, Plaxo isn't compatible with the iCloud yet. But hopefully we might integrate with iCloud in the near future (no eta).

    Thank you

    • Hello Jim,

Sorry to hear that you are facing an issue installing and syncing the Plaxo application on your Mac.

May I know the OS X version that you are currently running on your Mac? Also, could you let me know any error messages that you might be receiving when trying to sync?

Feel free to let me know (at helpme(at)plaxo dot com) if you need any help with your Plaxo account or sync and I’ll be happy to help. We ask you to email us due to privacy reasons and we wouldn't want you to post personally identifiable information in a public forum.

  • I have Plaxo set up to sync with my address book on my Mac Mini only, and then I have iCloud handle the distribution across all my Macs and i-devices.

Is that the best way to run it for the moment?

Incidentally, I found that I had to unclick "sync 'me' card with Plaxo profile" in the Plaxo configuration on my Mac. Otherwise, my 'me' card kept self-replicating.

Trusting Plaxo, I've been a happy and fully satisfied Plaxo "Premium" member since years.

Trusting Apple and my iPhone 4, it was very naturally that I accepted to download/install the iCloud application, thinking: "If synching my iPhone with my Outlook contacts+calendar+notes has been working so well -- with Plaxo too -- using a wire, then there's no reason it shouldn't also synch well "over the air" (OTA) with iCloud. I literally run my busy, efficient life using Outlook's Contacts, Calendar and Notes. And using Plaxo I could (up to now) synch seamlessly between the PC and Mac worlds.

Well, I should have checked first! I thought I could trustfuly become an "early adopter" of OTA synching with solid brands like Apple and Plaxo, but I was wrong.

What happened: iCloud transferred all my Contacts from Outlook into something called "Contacts in iCloud" *, because Outlook can no longer "see" these distribution lists in the new folder!) and Plaxo, not seeing them in the standard Outlook Contacts folder, now wants me to choose between erasing them all or stopping the synching, with an annoying pop-up dialog every time I launch Outlook. Totally pointless!

    * (which incidentally means I can no longer use my Outlook distribution lists, such as groups of employees or customers -- a very practical feature).

I hope that Plaxo will heed my paying "Premium" status and quickly make a decision to develop the appropriate synching module. Else I will have to uninstall iCloud and forfeit its OTA synching feature.

I have 2500 contacts and I fear for my professional efficiency.

Frustrated and confused! And worried, too, esp. when I see that in the 29 days since this was brought up by Olly, Plaxo hasn't seemed to show much interest. I'm hoping this might change soon...
    • Emm,

I would like to update you on this. Our recent patch (last week) fixed the issues with the Plaxo for IOS app & iCloud for iPhone\iPad. Our engineering team is currently working on a fix for Outlook's using iCloud & Plaxo. Since iCloud moves the contacts as you mentioned, Plaxo does not see these contacts and hence might prompt you with a message. Could you please share the popup message that you are seeing? Or email it to us?

I want to reassure you that Plaxo is working on fixing any known bugs related to iCloud to the fullest. Thank you for your patience on this.

We ask you to email us due to privacy reasons and we don't want you to post your e-mail address in a public forum.

      Thank you

I tried some more today to recover my contacts.

When I look at my Plaxo address database, there are obvious Dupes that are now being created pretty much every day.

When I go to dedupe, they do not see them.

These get propagated to iCloud and Mail/Contacts in Mac and to my iOS devices.

Years of careful contact management has been trashed. I am relying on Plaxo as my last line of defense. I'm not sure that I can now.

The next step is to warn everyone I know via social media not to use this combination of tools. I would prefer that Plaxo works a few nights and weekend to solve this before I have to play Paul Revere.

  • I have had disastrous issues off late syncing Plaxo on my iPhone, my Macbook and Outlook at work. Right now while syncing Plaxo on my iPhone it's giving me two messages: it will add 3280 addresses and it will remove 6,400 addresses, while Plaxo online is showing that I have 3614 addresses.
Is the solution to uninstall Plaxo and just go back to relying on iCloud?
    • Hi - Plaxo does not delete any details automatically.. Could you please email us - www.plaxo.com/ask, with your Plaxo account details? The app might simply need a reset (can you try logout\login? - this will reset the app).. Please email us, so that we can check your account logs and help you with this asap.

  • I’m frustrated
I have used Plaxo for a long time and loved it. I could categorize my contacts the way I wanted. This worked great on my iPhone until I had to update and sync my phone. Of course since I now have iCloud on both my iPhone and iPad plaxo will not work. I downloaded the app again hoping it would work. Nope now I am getting this picture about an exchange account. What is an exchange account? I don't want to mess with my settings in case I really screw something up. It is very confusing to some of us who is not that smart in the computer world. Until you get the problem fixed and can sync with iCloud I would delete the app, or at least make a note it is not compatible with iCloud.

    • Thanks Sharath
I appreciate that this has been a big change for Plaxo, but until it can work with iOS and Exchange, then I'll have to give up on Plaxo. I have two Exchange profiles on my iPhone (for business) and I need to to sync the calendars and contacts from them as well as my personal contacts and calendar from iCloud.

Keep us updated when there is a new release that can cope with Exchange on iOS.

  • I’m frustrated
I have a very nasty feeling that the interaction between plaxo and iCloud has corrupted addressbook completely. I am planning to uninstall plaxo and restore my addressbook from a timemachine back-up on my Mac.
    • Si - Plaxo does not delete or modify any details automatically. We do make automatic backups of the Plaxo address book. Can you try restoring the address book using Plaxo Backup & recovery tool? If you are seeing this problem constantly, we would love to investigate into this and find out more. Please email us - www.plaxo.com/ask with your Plaxo details..

Please do not post your details on a public forum, instead email us directly.

  • Four months ago this thread was started about syncing with iCloud. Still doesn't work and it appears that customers are giving up. Really guys? The manufacturer that has the dominant position in the portable devive market is drving the market. You need to get this working or someone else will.

Thank you, I finally gave up. What they don't understand, most of us are not computer wizards. I add the app and expect it to work. On my Iphone I don't know how to set up an exchange accout. Shoot, I had the people at AT&T set up my email, so I didn't have to mess with it and screw it up.

I think if they don't get the bug worked out to sink with Icloud then get rid of the app. This was supposed to make everything easier, but instead it has become a headache. If and when they get it sorted out, I would love to add the app back to my iphone and my ipad.

I have only just discovered that this is the reason why I keep ending up with between 3 and 11 copies of all of my contacts....

its a bloomin nightmare. I have used plaxo for years and now even after 5 months there is no fix?

  • I’m not happy
I am just as frustrated and until there are more than the 13 people and 27 post and maybe it becomes in the 100"s i don't think we will see a quick reply - too bad I have used plaxo for YEARS and it worked pretty good for me to sync multiple devices at home/work/laptop.

Even my assistant used it to keep track me! With the icloud we all have to rely on my office computer or some one has to call me - because apple tracks every "device" synced with its product and hasn't separated the cloud sync for information from purchases (itunes proprietary sales) soooooo.... between my office, iphone, home computer, my daughter laptop and her ipad (which share the itunes account) I am tapped out on "devices"....

Plaxo would have been a GREAT way to solve this problem in syncing my calendar/contact information over multiple computers (4 to be exact) that are not apple products _ which lends it self to the bigger question - to be more efficient what I Have to do? Now switch to apple computers? you would think some PC based people (beside google which has their issues) would be all over protecting the PC/Microsoft environment... just saying....

  • similar issues here, but i gave up on iCloud instead of plaxo. iCloud is not ready for prime time and it was plaxo's backup that saved my ass.

I have had issues with the MAC Lion and Plaxo working together...but as far as syncing my contacts, Plaxo wins over iCloud.

I have 3 iphones, 2 iPads and a PC/Outlook/exchange set up working fine. Only the MAC running Lion with Plaxo is an issue. With iCloud, it screws up Outlook/Exchange and does not have all the fields mapped.

  • I’m *VERY* frustrated
Looks like the thread ended long time ago, everyone giving up...

    Meanwhile
    1. Plaxo does still not support Windows 8 (not allowing support for Outlook any longer)
    2. iCloud sync does not work
    3. Major Blackberry (yes...) releases not supported at all
    4. ...

I think they will go out of business soon, failed to sell out while there may have been an oppty :D

  • I think mods need to clean up this thread - some spam in here.

I would really like to see native integration with iCloud (is that possible?). Then I could eliminate the iOS app and / or the Mac app and just have Plaxo update iCloud directly and iCloud can push out to all my Apple devices as it does so well.
