Syncing Contact Groups

I'm waiting with bated breath for Plaxo to be able to sync my Mac OS X Address book, my Google Contacts, and my Android Phone WITH GROUPS! Am I the only one who wants to see contact groups added?

Hey Matthew, you aren't the only one who wants this--I do too.

While we do sync contacts between all the sources you mention we should be aligning Plaxo Groups, Gmail Labels, Outlook Categories, and mobile groups. No timeline yet on when we'll get this in but it's definitely on our 2011 list.
    • Preston - with all due respect to your awesome proactivity, we've been hearing 'imminently' for a long time now (Sharath!) My keen interest is seeing the FULL compliment of data synced between my Outlook and GMail. The fact that Plaxo omits Categories means that I am always searching to replace Plaxo. Please take away that desire.

It seems that is should be a simple job, so I suspect the reason it has not been done is non-technical - maybe legal, maybe financial. If your users were more clear on that, maybe we could help. If it is truly just a programming issue, then you have no excuse.

Thank you for your hard work and good product. Looking forward to the day I am not trying to find a replacement and wasting time writing senseless posts.

Definetly need this. What is the point of syncing contacts if I have to go back in and manipulate them all?

  • I received email from VIP customer support stating that this was already happening -- i.e. gmail contact group designation syncing as a Plaxo (outlook) "category" but I've tested and it clearly isn't working in either direction of sync. That is, gmail groups aren't being imported to plaxo as "categories" nor are plaxo "categories" visible as gmail groups.

  • This is massively dropping the ball. More and more parts of sync are being offered for free. Way I see it, only way Plaxo has to stay at the front of the pack is to implement free sync, with grouping, across all platforms. Then charge more for premium services.

As it is now, pretty much everything Plaxo offers for free is available elsewhere (even if you have to put together two or three freebies), some with improved performance. Some of what Plaxo is charging for is being offered for free as well.

It's a pain for me to implement all the half-baked solutions, but I can make workable sync doing that. If Plaxo actually did full support easily, I'd be happy to stay with it. Heck, I'd even think of paying for the premium offerings. As it is now, I'll keep playing in the Plaxo free sandbox, hoping to see some of the suggestions implemented.

But the clock is ticking for sure!

Same here, would be an incredible (that's the positive, a necessary would be the right term) feature to have to be able to manage both contact AND their contact groups across platforms (Apple AB, Plaxo Online, Outlook and Google Contacts in my case)

    Any update on that?

I have a client that is desperately in need of a way to sync contact groups between OS X (10.7), Google Apps, and her Android phone.
She is completely dependent on her groups. Currently she updates both google apps contacts and apple Address book. It is crazy. She has 10 different groups with around 1000 contacts total.

I am not finding any solution.
Currently I am using iCloud to at least sync all of her Mac Computers address books up and that works.

I guess this is niche problem as it has been an issue for years with no one anywhere seeming to care to fix it.
    Not just plaxo issue

It's CRAZY that there is no solution to this! I mean, you can TALK to your iPhone and have it set reminders and dial calls but you can't sync groups across mac and google? Really?

    An alternative.

There's an app in the Mac App Store called "Contacts Sync for Google Gmail." I've been trying it out and it seems to be actually pretty stable. On the first sync, it successfully created all my contact groups from iCloud in Google Contacts, and filed all the contacts correctly.

It also syncs photos, so that's cool too.

It is a relatively new product, so BACK UP! My contact list is around 1000 cards, and I've only found a few mistakes... a contact named VP got duplicated, but one instance is V.P., so I understand that. One other contact got duplicated, I don't know why, and my "Me" card got duplicated, but that seems to happen a lot, so I can't fault them for that either.

At any rate, BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP!!!! But it's worth looking at and TESTING. I'd be curious to hear others' experiences with it, until Plaxo comes up with a solution.

    Plaxo folk,

I would imagine that the difficulty in doing this is that there is no standard for groups between the various cloud platforms.

You COULD be that standard if you grab it soon.

If groups and exchange server support were added this WOULD be my contacts for life. Without those, Plaxo is Mr. Right Now, not Mr. Right!

Well, I think Plaxo has officially missed their window of opportunity, at least for Mac users.

I'm trying out CoBook and it seems to be freaking awesome. Any changes I make on my desktop Mac are instantly pushed to Google Contacts, INCLUDING GROUPS!

I haven't really played yet with seeing how changes made in Google sync back... I imagine there's no push, but supposedly they will sync.

It also has Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter integration, and will even use Google Voice's unofficial API to initiate calls directly from your address book!

For all of you who have been waiting as eagerly as I have for a Google/iCloud integration, check out CoBook. I think this is it.

  • I don't know why Plaxo is being so slow on a lot of this stuff. But it's looking like they are happy to slowly fade away....

That's too bad, as overall, I like the service. But the rate that they support new stuff combined with the ever smaller delta between what is free and what one pays for with Plaxo premium services means the value proposition is getting to be less and less.

  • I've been having a lot of trouble with my Android phone and multiple google accounts for contacts.

It was my hope that Plaxo would solve this.

Last week, I decided to use only one google account for contacts.

Even though Plaxo was 'supposedly' syncing these accounts, nope, my primary google account was missing some of my most frequently used contacts.

HUGE FAIL people. With the groups problem ignored I'm very sad to say that Plaxo is not helping me at all.

I know $50/yr doesn't mean much in this world, but I hope Plaxo enjoys my last premium payment because I am done.

    best of luck.

Hi James – Sorry to know that you’re having trouble managing your contacts. Plaxo can help you in synchronizing with multiple Google Accounts at the same time. However, the groups do not sync at this time (but contacts will). We would like to check and help you out with this problem that you are seeing with regard to contacts that are missing from some of your Google accounts... Can you please email us your info (to helpme(at)plaxo.com, so that we can get in touch with you asap and help?

      Thank you

    Hi Folks,

I've been working on a 'contacts for life' approach, but without groups it's not going to fly.

I recently discovered soocial and while it doesn't have some of the features I like in Plaxo, it does synchronize groups between gmail accounts which would support my android phone and I'll just abandon the Outlook except for an occasional export from Google:
    http://community.soocial.com/soocial/...

Plaxo - get groups working and I'll stay!!!

  • Just returned to my Plaxo account and loaded from Gmail and Yahoo. I've spent a fair amount of time on both setting up groups and I will not do that again in Plaxo.

Plaxo, you can import and export and even live sync of contact information from google, yahoo and others. You have already done the hard work, there is no excuse for not doing groups.

You are either working on this new feature or you aren't. Which is it?

    • Unfortunately, we don't have any new updates on this as of now and our product development team will update users (via email and blog – blog.plaxo.com) once we have any updates.

Feel free to let me know (at helpme(at)plaxo dot com) if you need any help with your Plaxo account or sync and I’ll be happy to help. We ask you to email us due to privacy reasons and we wouldn't want you to post personally identifiable information in a public forum
    • Thank you for the update Mukund. I think I am going to get rid of my Exchange accounts and then I only have gmail systems to sync so I won't need Plaxo anymore. Best of luck to you all.

    Sharath,

The header indicates this is a "planned" item. What does that mean?

    What is the plan?

What is the priority of this item?

    • Sharath,

I should note that I have been working in the software industry for over 20 years. I have worked mostly in technical support and in all cases worked with development and product management.

I fully understand the need to do extensive testing to verify operation is per design and ensure compatibility with existing platforms. I am grateful that this is a clear concern of Plaxo.

I find the comment that "The rework requires a lot of code to be replaced..." disturbing. Since this feature is an extension of the contact data, the only reason I can think of for a lot code to be replaced is that the original design wasn't very modular and/or not designed for adding new functions.

Since a change to server code expected, I am disturbed that creating the "patch" is causing delays.

I can appreciate that some of your text might be overstatements of the situation. Taking them at at a lower level, I still find things to be disturbed about.

This lack of a synch function that does for groups what Plaxo already does for contacts is a glaring defect. Particularly since "At Plaxo, we are committed to developing the number-one smart, pervasive, and socially aware address book..." as stated by Hendrick Lee in a blog entry in 2010 (http://blog.plaxo.com/2010/10/google_...).

Finally, the question unanswered is what is the priority of this new function? By the fact that that question wasn't answered I can only assume it is not a high priority. It would be useful to know what items product management considers more important than this function.

I also understand that product management may not want to publish what their priorities are. I am okay with that, I just need to know that is the policy.

I am not satisfied with the situation, nor the answers to date.

I do not see Plaxo as the number-one address book service. Nor do I see any benefit from spending any more time on Plaxo replicating what I already have on other systems.
    • "Finally, the question unanswered is what is the priority of this new function."

Actually, I think this question has been answered EXTREMELY clearly. It's obviously not a priority at all. Plaxo's actions have been utterly consistent and crystal clear on this point. I may personally disagree with this decision, but I respect their right to make it.

As the guy who started this particular thread, I'm only replying now because I never bothered to turn off the email notifications for it. But I long ago decided to stop banging my head against the wall for something that clearly wasn't going to happen anytime soon. I uninstalled Plaxo on all my devices, and have moved on to other solutions.

      Just my 2 cents worth.

  • Plaxo has a great interface but the unability to sync groups (critical) and contacts photo sync pushed me to soocial. Just in 3 minutes their iphone app synced the contacts (with photo yes), and 3 more minutes to sync gmail account and outlook... easy...

Please Plaxo team, after years of waiting, is there a clear ETA for this features???

    Cheers
