TweetMiner Friend Finder System

I'm looking for feedback on this proposed new feature in tweetminer. The TweetMiner Friend Finder System will suggest new friends for you to follow based on various criteria that you enter into the system. Tweetminer will hunt down the new friends for you all day long and when you log in you will be informed of good matches. See below for mockups....

-----

1) This screen is the screen used to enter keywords and locations that you would like tweetminer to search when looking for possible new friends...

-----

2) By using this screen you can fine tune the friends that tweetminer finds.

-----

3) This is the screen that tweetminer uses to show you the reccomendations

-----

4) Tweetminer can also recommend un-following users who are not bringing value to your network

-----

5) This is a general activity log of what the friend finder system has been up to

  • I’m Happy!
Justin: I love it! It will save me from using other apps to find people Im looking for based on certain criteria! If the finding are current, it is even more powerful. TweetMiner become more a complete solution for me and eliminates visits to other apps! When is it ready :) I want to test so bad! Imad

Fantabulous idea Justin! This is a great way to initiate friend searches rather than to rely on the secret algorithmic sauce of premium services that rarely do a good job with their match ups.

  • Just a quick note to say development of this is progressing nicely I'm "hoping" to release by Feb 06. ETA keeps sliding I know, but that's because it's a bit more complicated than I had originally imagined.

  • Justin- you the man! Some points so far....

    Using the Friend Finder Feature...

    1) Can location of friend be global, instead of within certain miles? Lets say Im looking for someone talking about "green" but they are located in China?

    2) Would the search criteria support "AND" "OR", etc to search for friends?

    3) When I get a list of suggested friends, based on my search criteria...can I mass follow? Or do I have to click on "follow" one by one! Too cumbersome that way!!!

    4) Still trying to figure the unfollow feature...and will comment.

    Excellent work so far.

  • Justin,

    played some more....

    1) I see that I can set "any" for the search distance (instead of miles)...so that can take care of searching globally....right???

    2) In the Search box....options are "tweets" and "location"....can "bio" also be included?

    3) Unfollow features is in the works...so I will wait :)

  • i have established a list of searches...TweetMiner suggest about 30...when I added more search criteria, but not additional suggestions were made. Is there a limit of suggested friends at this point?

Also, how many friends will be suggested at a time? Lets say you look for "#cnn"....and "any".....how many suggested friends will be provided? Are you limiting to a certain size or?

  • Hi. Couple of points. First is that I will be away from TM for the next few days... because I'm moving house!

Now I'll try to answer some of your questions:

    1) Can location of friend be global, instead of within certain miles? Lets say Im looking for someone talking about "green" but they are located in China?

[JV] To focus on one country enter "china" and then select 2500miles. It's about as good as it gets at the moment I'm afraid! The default search is global if you dont enter any location.

    2) Would the search criteria support "AND" "OR", etc to search for friends?

[JV] It works the same as the std Twitter search. So if that works there then yes it will work.

    3) When I get a list of suggested friends, based on my search criteria...can I mass follow? Or do I have to click on "follow" one by one! Too cumbersome that way!!!

[JV] Not yet, but that is planned. I just wanted to get first version out the door.

    1) I see that I can set "any" for the search distance (instead of miles)...so that can take care of searching globally....right???

[JV] if you don't put any location then it searches globally by default.

    2) i have established a list of searches...TweetMiner suggest about 30...when I added more search criteria, but not additional suggestions were made. Is there a limit of suggested friends at this point?

[JV] For the moment it will limit to approximately 50 suggestions at any point. The scripts to make suggestions run in the background, so they don't happen instantly. It's best to check back about once every 4 hours. I am planning for it to send a notification email once it hits a certain number. This is just the very first beta release. It will get much easier to use over the next few weeks :)

    3) Also, how many friends will be suggested at a time? Lets say you look for "#cnn"....and "any".....how many suggested friends will be provided? Are you limiting to a certain size or?

[JV] Depends on how many search results each filter returns. A search is run once once every 2-3 hours with a limit of 50 results per search. It cycles through the filters, and only does one per search every three hours.

If It were to do any more than that it would not scale for all TwetMiner users. Besides you wouldn't want to add more than 400 friends in any given day anyway. Ultimately I'm thiking the limit will be about 400 friends a day per account. And if you follow them it will not follow them instantly it will drip-feed follow them over the course of 24 hours.

Hope this makes sense. See you in a few days!

  • Friend Finder is turning into a bigger beast than I had anticipated!

    Still left to do...

    1) Follow All (inside the app)
    2) The whole "suggest un-follow" section. Sounds easy but it's a "lot" of backend processing and logic. I guess it will take another week (minimum).
    3) Ability to browse discarded suggestions and undo the discard
    4) Make help videos for the "Friend Finder" section
    5) Re-do the basic TweetMiner intro video and include Friend Finder
    6) Create a Friend Finder stats page so you can see what it's done for you over time
    • Justin:

If you can figure a way, where you can follow the members within a twitter "list" you would have another winner.

So if Im looking for civil engineers, and I found a Twitter "list" that a Twitter member started for civil engineers, is there a way to simply follow the members within that list? Do able??? Let me know. Thanks, Imad
