Navigating site is always extremely slow

For over a year, every time I go to the site from work or home, I get the first page fine but logging in can take forever, or if I get logged in it takes minutes to get to a book's page, and then many more minutes to subscribe and get to my account page. I'm running on a MAcBook and have had the problem over a couple of OS upgrades, with FireFox 2.something to 3.5, using the same computer from home or work. Safari has had the same problem in the past but seems to work OK today. Any ideas? I tried disabling extensions for Firefox but maybe I missed something?

follow-up: Yep, Safari has the same problem. I hit this when subscribing, when changing subscription settings (frequency, or releasing episodes), navigating to other books. very frustrating; it makes the site usnusable as I can't tell if the page will ever load.

Eric...

I've made a change to the site which might resolve this. Could you let me know what it's like for you now?

How familiar are you with a plugin called Firebug? Would you be willing to assist me in tracking this down?

I'm still getting the same behaviour. I have the Firebug extension installed but haven't used it much and I am willing to help if I can.

To start: Are you trying to hit http://podiobooks.com, or http://www.podiobooks.com? (We've had DNS issues with the former)

Second: If you can fire up Firebug, watch the page load in the Net tab. Let me know what element it seems to be hanging on.

I'm using www.podiobooks.com. The main page loads fine, in less than a second, Firebug shows that the site is hitting google.com and google-analytics.com. Then when I try to log in the page just hangs, nothing is displayed in the Firebug Net tab; the status bar just reads "Waiting for www.podiobooks.com..."

Left the tab open a while and after 6 minutes there's finally some progress, not sure what you need but the process to GET login.php from the podiobooks site takes 6m 10s, it then contacts google-analytics and gets a response in 10ms.

I have Firebug installed now, too - let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. I'll try to respond faster.

Site is completely down right now, Sat Oct 10 2009, 1 AM PDT. Are you working on this issue?

Precision - I see a "site down" email. Then your email five minutes later. Then a "site up" email a minute after that. :)

At that time, the Apache process took off and spiked the load average on the machine. The monitoring script caught it, stopped Apache and restarted it.

Just a data point, the problem seems to have got worse in the past couple of days. The site is fine until I try and log in then its just slows to a crawl.

For the past few days I have not experienced this issue at all, the site is lightning fast. Has there been a configuration change that could explain this?

As usual it seems, I get a fast page load then things just grind to a halt. Its waiting on the server to respond, has yet to get any page content

and for what its worth I hadn't tried for some time because I just plain had given up. I tried this morning, saw the usual routine, and then searched to see if I could find any mention of this experience elsewhere, which brought me here. Glad to find a thread that shared my issue I had to register and share myself. Guess I'm back to giving up again.

I wish I could replicate the problem you're seeing. My results:

Just another data point, I was using Firefox (3.6b5 although I get the same using 3.5.x) on Snow Leopard to add a new subscription and I received the usual hang when clicking the "Log In/Register" link. I then switched to use a Chromium nightly build (35329) and there were no delays. I also tried using Safari (4.0.4) and it again returned without delay.

So it looks like the problem is something to do with Firefox.

I'm still having this issue when using a browser other than Safari, if I use Chrome or Firefox the site is _very_ slow. Using Safari it's nice and quick.
