Texture/objects bug on mac version *Screenshot included*.

Hi,

I just bought the humble bundle, and the mac version of FEZ seems broken.
The textures and objects are at the wrong places in the levels.





I've got an 2011 13' inch Macbook pro(i5, IntelHD 3000, 8gb RAM).

Apart from this (important) issue, the game runs fine.

I hope someone will be able to provide a fix.

  • So it looks like this bug only affects the Intel HD 3000 GPU, based on this and the e-mails I've gotten on the subject.

    I will look at this bug accordingly. If anyone sees this bug and is NOT on the HD 3000, please let me know.

  • I've also got this bug. Just commenting to add, in case it's helpful, that the /FEZ/Debug Log.txt says my OpenGL is only version 2.1.

    I have 2012 13" Macbook Pro (i5, Intel HD 3000, 16gb RAM), on OS X 10.7.5.

  • So I'd like to to look at this from the angle of "Can the Apple HD 3000 even support this game", which is grim, but depending on what the limitations are we may be able to adjust things to get it working here.

    First things first:

    -- SNIP - NO LONGER USED --

    In this folder you'll notice two files, "glGetInfo.osx" and "glGetInfo.Core.osx". The former works on the compatibility OpenGL context, and the latter works on the Core OpenGL context. To run these, just Open With > Terminal. It should pop up a messagebox telling you some info, post that here. (It also saves this information to a file, "glGetInfo.txt".)

    There's a good chance that the glGetInfo.osx info will be totally useless, since it prints a bunch of 0s as the info. The Core binary, however, should be a little more honest.

    We also have this test binary: -- SNIP - NO LONGER USED --

    You can extract the files to FEZ.app/Contents/MacOS/, where it should overwrite the old files in the app bundle.

    This attempts to run the game on the Core context. By default, we run FEZ on the compatibility context. To be honest, I expect this to fail miserably and not even render anything, as it does on my setup. However, it does paint a full picture on what the Apple Intel HD 3000 driver may or may not be doing.

    I'm running the game through Steam so I'm not exactly sure how to run the test binary.

  • Oh, that'd be my fault, forgot to compile with -mmacosx-min-version. Go ahead and redownload the archive, it should work with Lion now.

    Note that because we're attempting an OpenGL 3 context, Snow Leopard users will NOT be able to run these tests. That'd be another nasty downside to this being a solution... here's hoping we're wrong!

  • Well, that verifies that then, I suppose. I'm actually kind of surprised that the Core GL binary works, but looking at the glGetInfo stuff it looks like the behavior is the same either way.

    This bug is going to take a while to debug/diagnose, so there may be a large gap of time before you see an update to this thread. I definitely would like to fix this though, as I'm almost entirely sure that the hardware is capable of running the game... it's just the driver getting in my way.

  • Looking to do a bit more poking around at possible errors... another FEZ test binary:

    This checks for OpenGL errors before each SwapBuffers call, and if an error is detected, it shows a messagebox and exits the game.

    Let me know if you get a messagebox after entering the game. All I'll need is the contents of the messagebox, and that'll be enough, I think.

      I replaced the previous files in the MacOS folder and got this error upon relaunch of the application:

      Open GL Error

      Error Code: InvalidEnum
    • Edit: Ohh, false alarm. Apparently the MG-SDL2 window creation triggers an InvalidEnum, so odds are the error you got was just the initial thing, rather than one of the actual in-game calls...

      Neat, so we can at least be sure that the driver is trying to tell us _something_. what that something is, we'll have to find out. To apitrace and/or the Profiler!

      (Also I should probably try and find a Mac with an Intel HD 3000 GPU so I can trace this on the actual hardware...)

  • Hi everyone,

    After a quick discussion with Ethan by mail, i went to this topic where everyone has a problem with the Intel HD 3000. For me, I can play the game without problem, I solved almost all rooms.

    All except one (and her child) : the «music room» (a quick look here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjej-y... ). When I enter in this room the game freeze, but only the interface. I have the black loading screen but the yellow cube on the bottom right doesn't move. I have the music, sounds of Gomez when i walk of flip. I can only go to pause menu and go back to the waterfall.

    I'm running the game on a MacBook Pro with an Intel HD 3000 but my friend has the same bug on Windows 8 with Intel HD 4000.

    Keep me in touch for the fix of the issue with these chipsets.

      Problem solved for me. I have to do a restoration of my computer (for some other reasons), i'm scared to have same issues of this topic after that, I hope not. I keep you in touch, but your solution was good, thank you :)
    • Oh I forgot to reply about my case.

      So I restored all my Mac (erase all data) and reinstalled a fresh OS X (Mountain Lion 10.8.5). I reinstalled Steam and FEZ and it's still ok, i just have the lightness issue in the music rooms (only in these rooms, I suppose it's because of the blue light effect).

      I also notice a problem but it's not really important : I don't have vibration on my XBox 360 wired controller. I installed all drivers and it should work but it doesn't. I also install Windows 8 with Bootcamp, the controller works great.

      So that's it. I finished the game few hours ago (209.4%) and i'm definitely saying it : FEZ rocks !

  • Another question for this thread: Is anyone here running on Mountain Lion? The fellow above with the brightness bug was running on an HD 3000, but with Mountain Lion... and I noticed that all the glGetInfo output I have from this thread seems to be from 10.7.5... right?

    If meGAmeS1's case isn't unique, then the fix may just be to upgrade to Mountain Lion. But, this is assuming that everyone here is only on Lion...

    • Yes. But when I updated the OS to the latest version, the graphics started working again. Updating to 10.8.5 from a previous 10.8 version seemed to do the trick.

    Having the same issue on OSX 10.7.5 With Intel HD Graphics 3000.

    The bugs make the game non-playable, walking to the mailbox does nothing...

    You can extract the files to FEZ.app/Contents/MacOS/, where it should overwrite the old files in the app bundle.

    This time, I took out my terrible GL calls that were spawning errors on OSX. This time, OpenGL errors should not happen anywhere, so if a MessageBox does show up, they should be unique to the HD 3000 hardware... once again, post the error message here if it shows up.

    - Starting room is black
    - Other rooms’ graphics are misplaced
    - Essential elements missing and not working (e.g. the mailbox)

    UPDATE:

    I'm able to play the game, although there are several issues, mainly the black rooms!

    Either way, if one positions yourself at the bottom tube and stands still it will prompt you to read the letter, from there on I've been able to play the game—albeit with issues.

    Either way, I'm ecstatic that I can already play FEZ a bit! Good luck with the issues Ethan!

  • I now have a report from someone who upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion and it fixed the bug. If anyone is willing to take the dive (ignoring Mavericks' upcoming release) and wants to try it out, feel free to let me know how it goes. If I get another report verifying it, I'll make the call on this bug and declare it "Blame Apple"... which would be unfortunate, but at this point I've really got to pin it on their Intel driver (and its lack of updates!).

    • I notice the driver version is 8.0.61... which version of Mountain Lion is this? So far the earliest known driver working with the game is 8.12.47, but I don't know which ML version has that driver specifically.
    • This is 10.8.2. I've been having trouble upgrading ML because of a separate issue. Forgot about that.

  • I purchased fez via the humble bundle about a week ago, and on downloading the drm-free game, it worked perfectly on my 2011 imac running OSX 10.6.8.

    A few days after that, I downloaded the same game from the humble bundle website onto a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.8. I opened up the game, and the graphics in the first room (Gomez' bedroom) display pure black, other than the Gomez sprite.

    Strange graphical issues have reoccurred throughout the course of the rest of the first level, which has made it extremely confusing, such as when there is a door in the middle of the air or a character is suddenly walking with no ground beneath them.

    At some times, when a certain graphic should be there, it just isn't displayed at all.

    When I deleted the game files and redownloaded them multiple times on the macbook, I only got the same results, but on the iMac it has continued to run perfectly.

    When I wiped all traces of fez one last time from the macbook and downloaded it through steam, it heralded the same results.

    It was obviously an apple-related graphics processing issue.
