how do I group objects?

I've placed objects (text and images) and put a frame around them, but when I move the frame the objects inside do not move with the frame. How do I make them a group, so I can scale them and move them as a unit?

I've tried holding down the shift key while dragging, and I've tried holding down the shift key while placing the frame in the first place, but neither was successful. What am I missing?

Hi Kim,

sorry of we were not clear...

frames don't actually group objects - yet. we are working on that.

What you can do, is to select the frames with the objects within - using multi.-select.

to do this, you can either:
hold down shift in place mode, and drag the selection rectangle you'll see around the frame - this way everything within will be selected.

Or you can shift click on all the items you need to select.

or you can combine the two.

Hope this helps!

Adam--

It does help...I worked this out on my own yesterday in any case, so it was not too far from intuitive. Love that Zebra, by the way: for those of us who are very compulsive about our presentations it would be nice to be able to snap to the coordinate grid in some mode.

Another question, if you're willing: graphics guru Edward Tufte has bitter reactions to PowerPoint (and Keynote, and other slide-based presentation tools), for reasons that Prezi seems largely to address. Has it been shown to him, and if so, has he expressed a reaction?

Just a suggestion:

I'd like a way to group objects (not necessarily inside a frame) and keep them grouped for ease of editing.

Yes, I'd love that too. I use groups a lot for my presentations, so it's very annoying having to remember to select everything every time.

persistent grouping would be great, for any kind of restructuring the prezi by rearranging groups, some kind of a lasso function would be even increase the value. Persistence needs not to be bullet proof for centuries, and need not be saveable (if there is a lasso collecting all items into a group)

I think I have a shortcut. The way I do it is simply group my objects together and then put a frame around them, then instead of putting one of those objects in the Path, I put the Frame in the path. Thus since the frame is around the objects, they look like they are together.

Grouping is the most essential functionality I currently miss in Prezi. I don't care if it is related to frames or not: drawing a rectangle and selecting all objects inside it would work well enough I think.

Shift + click + drag
like shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4PipH...

first shows you individually add items to group like is well known, later shows a different technique although it is not a permanent connection, it is so easy and quick I thought to mention it.

It is not the answer to your prayers but I hope it helps!

Selecting many works ok, but how about adding the ability to make them a group. Group/Ungroup should be avaialble. Its a lot to have to select them all every time you want to move or act on them all.

what should be 5 minutes work can be 5 days as no layers or groups with very hard to select objects. I gave up using Prezi as it is amazing, but spending hours doing this trival, wasteful tasks is not worth it.

I am getting a little worried that this functionality is still not available. Three basic functions that are essential to make Prezi "workable":

- Grouping objects, including copy, paste, ....
- Alignment of objects
- Layers

While you could not group objects at the point I commented and this thread began, you can group objects using Frames. Draw a frame around objects, move the frame and then delete it.

Don't get it. Still doesn't work. Please be explicit which frame, etc.

Holding the SHIFT key while dragging the mouse will select a group which can be repositioned or resized as a group. It doesn't stick, though, so you have to do it each time to group, which is fine.

Here's an old video that helps you understand how grouping works without frames: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4PipH...

Here's a video - a quick old one - on how to group objects and move them in Prezi (not using frames.)

Ohh I just found out how to do it! Hold down shift and enclose the selection box around everything you want to move. Then you can drag it all!

I thought that Adam's response from 3 years ago was pretty clear.
Regarding persistent grouping (which I think would be really useful), I've started putting frames (can't be invisible frames) around what I would group so that they can be adjusted together as many times as I want. Then I delete the frame at the end. In some cases I find that the frame is worth keeping to further emphasize the groupiness.

"Groupiness" best new word I've heard in awhile. I'm putting that in my personal dictionary!
