I’m confused

Preferences lost?!

And I wanna be the first in the uproar: Why have you eliminated one of the coolest and most intelligent and elegant feature of Pulse with the recent update? Why does the software now not save how to view the individual feeds? Now it takes a step more to watch a whole article in web view. Hope this was only a mistake...

  • Hi Jan-Tobias,

I'm not sure what you mean. Which feature are you referring to?

    Thanks,
    Karen

  • When you read an article of a feed and switch to web view the next article of that feed is directly shown in web view. The last update eliminated that feature. Now every feed is first shown in feed view and you have to switch to the web view manually.

This feature was there from the start and was one of the things that showed how well thought your software was. Hopefully the elimination was only a mistake...

  • ...sadly it's true...and it makes reading the notcot feed a pain, since the text view now has a tap to zoom function and you can't get to the content any other way than changing to web view on every single post and click/tap the image link there...maybe pinching was the way to go....nevermind maybe it comes back with the next great update in 2 months :P

    Same issue.
Pulse remembering this setting was, for me, what really set it apart from other readers.

  • Hi Everyone!

Thanks so much for letting us know how you feel. We're working to revamp the text vs. web button so the functionality to remember was lost along the way. It is still very much a work in progress so we may add the feature back in. It definitely helps that you all chimed in to let us know your thoughts.

If you want to share more about why you loved this feature, please express it here. Thanks again for writing to us!

    Thanks,
    Karen

  • Thanks for the reply, Karen.

I'm disappointed that this feature may be added back in. For me, it was what made Pulse the killer app for reading all of my tech news. It remembered that I want my slashdot feed to load with the web version, but something like daring fireball to load quickly with just text.

As it is now, to read something like slashdot the way I expect (and for the comments to show properly), I have one or two extra taps. I tap on the story, then tap the story AGAIN (or the web button) to get a view that shows the comments properly.

Pulse was my go-to app on my iPhone, iPad, and Android devices and I really liked how it used to work. For now, I've gone back using Safari, but I may check out how Zite or your other competition handles my sources.

If it'll help, the sources on my main tab are Facebook feed (text), slashdot (web), Engadget (web), TUAW (text), Mac Rumors (web), Daring Fireball (text), Reddit (web), The Verge (web.)

Any source with comments I prefer in web view because the comments don't show properly in web view (I feel like I've repeated this too much.)
    • Hi Chad,

This is extremely helpful--thanks so much! It's great for us to have the sources that you like to view in text for some reason or other because as you know, we're always expanding the catalog and this helps us focus our efforts on making sure the sources are optimized in text view.

As for the comments, we agree that those are often vital to the content. We're working on incorporating comments in a beautiful way and we hope to continue to develop a product that you enjoy using.

Let me know if you want to share any other thoughts--our team is always open to it.

      Thanks,
      Karen

  • Hi,
Until you complete the work in progress on the text vs web, can I request that you reinstate the functionality? It was really helpful!
Here are some more feeds from major websites that do not work under the text view:

    BBC Technology News
    Wired Top Stories
    Lifehacker
    CNET News
    CNET UK
    Ars Technica
    Slate magazine - Technology
New York Times - Most Emailed
    The Onion
    io9
    Apartment Therapy

    Thanks,
    D
    • Hi! Thanks for sharing this. It'd be great to know what you mean by "do not work". Is the content slim? Or is there no content at all? Any more information you can provide would help us immensely.

      Thanks,
      Karen
    • The issue is that only the first few sentences of the content of these sites is displayed in the text view. You need to go to web view to see the rest of the content on the page. So text and pictures from articles are not viewable in text view for these sites. Try for yourself.

I don't think that this is a new issue with the text view, it's just that the default now is to go into text view rather than web view where the content is readable. So in the past the solution to this issue was Pulse remembering the view settings.

The main requirement is to able to read the content without too much hassle, and one solution to that was Pulse remembering the view settings, but another solution would be the text view providing the full content - and for sites like Wired, Ars Technica, New York Times, that ideally also means handling multi-page articles. The sites above are all major sites that are likely to be popular with Pulse users, so many users would probably benefit.

      regards,
      D

  • We stll talk about the formerlly working feature of the newsreader that he remembers the settings to either see the rss text page or directly goes to the original website of the feed. I also find this very annoying on the iPad and can not understand why it should be so complicated to reimplement a feature that was once working and is broken in the current version. Do you plan to do this not? Because may sounds for me as an empty promise that will not be fullfilled as other features

  • The disappearance of the "remembering text/web" functionality is so annoying as to render pulse unusable for me. None of my feeds have anything more than a couple of words in the text view and every new article now needs a couple of clicks.

    Please fix ASAP! Thanks.

  • I’m frustrated
This is so frustrating. With the IMO best feature of Pulse gone, browsing through articles is now utter pain in the neck.
Since I prefer the web view for most of my feeds, the new UI is a dealbreaker for me.
The problem is not only that the reader no longer remembers display preferences. Even worse was removing the sliding interface from the web view in favour for useless 90' browser buttons.

  • I picked up Pulse when it was still payware, and it's one of my most-used and most-recommended apps. I guess I didn't realize how much I relied on the default-web-view feature, because now that it's gone I'm finding browsing to be a chore rather than a pleasure: click article, click little link icon, repeat. I didn't even have a Google Reader account set up, but I just bought Reeder for $4.99 and am in the process of setting one up to see if I can get what I want out of it. PLEASE bring back this feature! For me, it apparently makes the app.

  • The new version is even worse as you completely removed now the buttons for web and text view. For the user experience this is not a good development...

  • This new update is really a step back.
Before i could just tab once to read my news in web-view and when i was done i could just tab the "menu" and i was back.
Now i have to tap the news - tab the headline to get to web-view - tab done and finally tab menu.
Why did you change something that was working perfectly ?
I used to think it was so easy and fast to read my news. Now it's really annoying that i have to tap twice as much to do the same....

    If it ain't broke....

    Please change this back. ;)

  • I’m cheated
It is frustrating for those who, like me, *paid* for this application (I paid £2.99 back in December 2011) to have the application handicapped in what appears to be a cynical attempt to force users to view advertising given it is now a free app.

Is there a way to get a refund now the app seems to be advertising driven?
    • Hi Craig,

Thanks for writing to us. Pulse has been free since 2010 so if you were charged, please contact your phone service provider.

Also, the ads that do appear in Pulse are those that are already embedded int he content, such as banner ads. Pulse has not added any ads so if you are seeing something that looks abnormal, please take a screenshot and share it. We'd be happy to take a look. You can email us at feedback(at)pulse(dot)me.

      Thanks,
      Karen
    • Karen, while I appreciate that Pulse employees are still monitoring the discussion, I find it disappointing that you're focusing on points such as when Pulse stopped being payware and the nature of its monetization rather without providing any updates on the primary subject of discussion: the removal of per-feed viewing preferences. If you have anything to share about that, I would love to hear about it!
