Temp Display on Graph idea

Any chance of a new feature?
Firstly, thanks for the Wunderground Weather updater, its great to have external temp displayed on my charts, before I was getting internal from my Current Cost via pachube.

What would be great though would be to continue uploading the pachube temp and have a new line on the graph for internal temp.

It would be really useful to have both external temp (via Wunderground) and internal temp (via pachube).

If the was a drop down next to "pachube data stream for temperature" that you could choose between internal or external, then if you chose internal it added a new line to the graph and continued allowing Wundeground to supply the external.

Would be good to see energy usage as the outside temp gpes down to maintain the intenal temp.

What do you think?

  • It's worthwhile feature, but the addition of new data streams won't be happening for a while.

  • BB I know you said before this feature would not happen any time soon as its a new data stream but is it something thats on the development list as a maybe.
I would love to use my unused currentcost temp stream.

  • I've been trying to get OWL to update their software to include the internal temperature (which is currently only displayed on the console), so if and when that happens, I would like to see this feature on pvoutput as proposed by asorton.

  • Personally I think BB has enough just maintaining what he has. Do we really want to keep adding to the complexity. It's up to BB of course, but if I was maintaining this system I would be very reluctant to keep adding extra bells and whistles unless they had direct and important benefits for managing PV generation data. BTW, not sure why you need 2 temperature streams - what benefit does it give you I wonder?

  • I put some of the reason for this request but there are more good ones too:

Some people have inverters in their loft and worry about the heat up there, putting your CC in the loft will give you a temp trace against power generation useful.

I have my inverter in a small cloakroom downstairs, I have ventilation in top and bottom and have tried to monitor the temp but it means being at home/checking a manual thermometer, a trace on my graph would be great to monitor my temp as generation increases through the day.

As am monitor of the inverters environment its very useful, the last ting anyone wants is an expensive inverter overheating which ultimately shortens its lifespan.

For anyone monitoring all energy use in the home a graph that shows the temp going down outside, the internal temp and energy usage is very useful. For gas users a further monitor is required (assuming a compatible meter).

Bankstownbloke does a fantastic job that we all appreciate and the last thing I want to do is add unnecessary workload but a useful suggestion is a benefit to the site and users which is why I left it as an open suggestion for consideration.

I think there are real merits to this idea, especially as the feed is already there and just need capturing.

  • Understand your issues, but if your inverter gets too hot what will you do - turn it off?
Mine is in my garage. I asked for it there because it can get very hot in the loft and I know they don't perform so well when hot. Mine has a fan which only runs in the event of excessively hot environment - todate I haven't caught it running at all.

I wasn't aware inverters reported their temperature actually. I would have thought they would close down automatically on safety grounds if over cooked.

Your right about BB though he's a real gem. Good luck with your request.
    • They will cut out in extreme conditions otherwise they will run very hot with cooling fans running flat out and the inverter derating.

If it does get too hot I would take action, in my case (not in loft), I would add additional ventilation. For those with inverters in lofts its a clear signal to get the installer back and sort the issue out rather than go un-noticed until out of guarantee and an inverter failure.

Inverters don't report their temperature (some can be checked if you log in) but the current cost meter sat next to it will report the temperature of the immediate area, thats the point.

  • I'm always open to ideas.

One of the problems with adding additional data streams besides the additional work is that it the graphs become rather busy - there is already 6 streams on the same graph.

The longer term plan is for any additional streams to go to a separate graph (by default) and data storage area - here you can add arbitrary feeds and compare. Although the aim isn't to become another Pachube/Cosm - you can already use Pachube for that.

  • Could there be an "options" on that page where you can select the "user defined" view, but then still be able to click the KEY to add/remove the streams you don't normally see but occasionally want to see.

Most people don't have grid voltage so only see 5 of the 6 but for those that do its also one you probably don't need to see all the time.

You could also then have a clicky next to the key that gives "show all"/"user defined" which would also help users realise they can click on the key to add and remove streams (I only discovered this recently).

I love they way I keep finding useful "hidden" functions on the site that I had no idea existed, you get a "oh thats useful" moment :)

  • my CMS 2000 reports the temperature and records on PVO every 5 minutes and external temps recorded every 15 minutes. It gives a strange graph but I can see the the upper levels are the inverter and the lower ones ambiant. Would be nice if they were separated. http://pvoutput.org/intraday.jsp?id=1...
