QWin 2017: Deluxe - Downloaded transactions are out of sequence compared to statement

I have Quicken Deluxe 2017 and have downloaded my transactions from my Charles Schwab checking account. When comparing the transactions against my monthly statement I found that they are not entered in the Quicken register in the same sequence. The result is that the balance column doesn't match as I go line by line.  Is this a bug? Is there anyway for me to correct the Quicken register so that the transactions are in the same order?

Hi Debbie,

I'm sorry for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused. It sounds like your register is not being sorted by the DATE column. When you get a chance, please move your mouse to the header of the DATE column, and click once, to bring that column into focus. You should see a small triangle pointing either up or down, in the lower right corner of the column header. Selecting on the triangle should cause the transactions to toggle back and forth between "most recent at the bottom" and "most recent at the top".

If that doesn't resolve the problem, please comment below so we can help you get the answers you need, as quickly as possible. I hope this helps,

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your response. I tried it and either way the transactions appear out of order. For example: On my statement I have:

Beginning Balance
Visa Debit Kaiser
Visa Debit Trader Joe's
Deposit Mobile Banking

The Quicken register shows:

Beginning Balance
Deposit Mobile Banking
Visa Debit Trader Joe's
Visa Debit Kaiser

It appears to have something to do with the Deposit Mobile Banking transactions because as I look further down my statement and compare to the Quicken Register, the Deposits always appear first in Quicken but not on my statement.

To further clarify this.... when looking at all the transactions for a given date, if any of the transactions are Deposit Mobile Banking transactions they are always listed before any of the other transactions for that date.

The date column on my transaction register shows the transaction date rather than the post date. I cannot display or sort by the post date because when I add a column that is called the "downloaded posting date", it is a duplicate of the transaction date. To reconcile to the vendor statement easily, I should be able to sort by the posting date, but if I reconcile and click as uncleared the transaction dates that are not included in the statement, only the transactions that should be included, reconcile. Having to work around this problem is a pain. If you could sort by posting date, perhaps your problem would be solved too.

Usually, in a banking register that is sorted by Date, transactions for the same day are arranged
- Deposits first.
- Withdrawals next.

That's so that the register doesn't show a negative running balance if withdrawals would appear to overdraw the account. People always complain if the register does that.

If you want to make sure that your account register's running balance matches the bank statement running balance for any given day, only look at the last transaction of the day. Any apparent discrepancies throughout the day should resolve themselves at the end of the day.

Debbie, why are you using the register to compare to your bank statement? Have you tried using the reconcile feature?
