Loosing faith in Quicken

I am currently using Quicken 2017 R6 Build 26.1.6.1. As far back as R5 I have been getting false data when I try to reconcile. The previous month's beginning balance is always different that when it was reconciled the month before. I'm always making adjustments, and now my whole database is corrupted. I have been using Quicken for over 15 years and it's only been in the last 2 releases that I've had problems. I'm ready to dump the program and find something better.

I'm also a long-time Quicken user. I occasionally have the same problem with the previous month's beginning balance not matching. I generally problem solve and attribute it to reconciled transactions that have been deleted by mistake. I wish there was a double check to alert me so I don't inadvertently delete a reconciled transaction.

I solve the potential problem by each month downloading all my reconciled transactions in each account to an Excel spreadsheet. It's a bit of a pain but it allows me to match spreadsheets to see what's missing.

I also use the missing check number function in accounts with them to see what's missing.

I'm also a relatively unhappy Quicken user. If you find something better please let us know.

"I wish there was a double check to alert me so I don't inadvertently delete a reconciled transaction."

Two things to do:

  1. Use the "Set password to modify transactions" shortly after the end of each month.  At the very least having that password set will slow you down enough when you attempt to delete a transaction in a "closed" period so that you can reflect on whether your really SHOULD delete it.
  2. Select Edit > Preferences > Notify and make sure that "Before changing reconciled transactions" is ticked.  That way you'll always be asked about deleting one.

Have you been using the VALIDATE AND REPAIR function? Look under FILES/FILE OPERATIONS. That has fixed file issues for me.

Just tried the Validate and Repair function, and it crashed Quicken. Actual wording was something like "... caused the program to stop working"

Yikes sounds like you might have a corruption problem with the program itself. Have you tried to contact Quicken directly?

I did, and they told me to restore a back-up, which I did, but I still have the same problem. I'm thinking about reinstalling the program, but I'm afraid of 'loosing' some transactions.

And despite your education...it's "LOSING" faith in Quicken.

You didn't LOOSE anything!

You call yourself "SuperUser", well if you were trying to be funny, your comment flew like an anvil. When people are having problems with Quicken they are in NO mood for snarky comments.

My pet peeve.

Anyone with a fifth grade education should know the difference between "lose" and "loose".

Ever hear of typos? One "O" vs two?

Yes, but I've also heard of people being so inattentive as to not proofread their own posts before hitting the Submit button.

And if you can't pay attention, why should we???

And there's an edit button even if you miss it the first time and post.

Well SuperUser and NotACPA - other than your smart comments, you've done nothing to help, so why don't you just withdraw from this conversation.

Not yet, but more remarks like this and I may loose my temper ...
