Better to avoid split categories?

Based on my online reading of Quicken, it seems as though split transactions can run into problems. So, I was thinking that I might break the 1 transaction into 2 transactions. This will be more cumbersome for me, the user, but can it be worth it a lot, in order to avoid other issues?

I haven't personally run into problems with split transactions except in 2 areas:

1) The software seems to copy the category data to the "tag" field. I have tried to turn this off but haven't been able to get it to work

2) Can't check the category data too easily when scrolling through the transaction list (have to put the mouse over the field to see what's there). But, this can be solved pretty well by running and then viewing a report.

What are some of the other drawbacks of using splits?
