Custom WebTV Channel Questions

I used the instructions posted at the following URL to set up my Web TV software to pull custom channels.

http://getsatisfaction.com/rebrand_so...

I have a few questions about that:

-The software doesn't seem to be pulling my file. Why is that?

-How often does the software check for updates from my file?

-I only have the full version of the software, where is the demo?

-Why is the software showing your channels? it should show only ours.

  • Hi,

The software is set to look for an existing database. If it does not find one, it will create an empty one and immediately connect to your file to look for updates.

This way it always connects to your file the first time it is installed and run on a clean computer.

If a database does exist, it will wait until the Update button is clicked to connect.

Here is what happened: when we sent you the original software before modifying it, it created a database on your system and filled it with our channels.

Later, we modified the software so that it won't install our channels and will search for updates on your server. However, the old database is still there. Because of that:

-It is not automatically trying to pull your file
    -Our channels are still visible

Here is how to fix that for any computer that you installed the unmodified software on:

    Windows 7
    1) click Start > Run
    2) Type "%programdata%" without the quotes and hit OK
    3) Find your program's folder
    4) Delete any files named TV##.dat where ## is the version number of the program

    Windows XP
    1) Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
    2) Find your program's folder
    3) Delete any files named TV##.dat where ## is the version number of the program

That will reset the program so that there are no channels and it will be like a fresh computer.

Regarding the full and demo versions: I tested it and was shown the demo. Is the software already registered? If so, follow these steps to revert it:

  • hi mike,
i have done what you have described above,
it did generated a new Tv35.Dat file
but i don't see it pulling the data from anywhere on the network (i am using fiddler)
    not my server nor yours.

once the software will pull the data from my server (Reminder: http://www.icpc.tv/OnLineTVMac/TVStat...)
i'll be able to fix all the issues i had in thje syntax of it
and fill it will all of my 2500 stations DB

    Thanks
    David

  • Hi David,

I'm looking at the source code and it is pointing to the correct place.

I have never used fiddler so I don't know how it works, but if it's a proxy debugger you may have to configure the proxy settings in the software (File > Connection Settings) to run through Fiddler.

Make sure you're pushing the update button.

I will go ahead and rebuild it now, and upload a new installer for you, just to make sure you're using the most recent copy of the software.

  • Hi Mike,
The new build did the trick!!
i didn't need to configure the proxy settings, the old version simply didn't pull my file.
the new one does and i see it on the fiddler.

i also see the software indicates the 4 days trial and allows me to register if i want.

i'll play with the syntax of the stations file and get it done.
i'll contact you if i have any questions
    thanks a lot

  • Hi Mike,
i have changed my TVStations.txt file and i'm finaly able to see my stations in the software

why does it still shows your stations also?

    - i was unable to see two feeds under the same channel
and i saw that in some of your channels, it does show more feeds than one under a channel

    - where can i define the image and descriptioon for the feed, i saw you have it also.

    thanks

  • Hi Mike,
    Another small thing,
why does the software now pulls my file every time i open it (it opens the update dialog on every launch)?

isn't there is some cache mechanism or interval pulling?

it will load my server more than needed.
i say once a day could be fine because we're not updating the stations that often

  • David,

The reason it's loading every time is a bug: it wasn't saving that it had done the initial update. I have fixed it and will upload a new copy. The way it is set up, it will always do an initial update but after that it will require them to press the update button.

To make two feeds show up under the same channel they should both have the same channel ID.

I think it's still showing our stations because of an old database file. I double checked and we are not including any channels with your build or linking to our server. Try the instructions in the first post above again to delete the database file that will remove our channels.

There is no way to manually define image and description for a feed right now. What you're seeing is pulled from RSS feeds and the descriptions for those are hard coded.

I know this is frustrating and I'm sorry about that. This is the first time we have done this type of thing.

  • thanks mike,
have you uploaded the version, because i still see the one you uploaded on 8/17

my tv stations file now contains 2 channels with 3 feeds (it pulled my file every time and it took too long so i made it short for now)

the software does show both channels (look under TV for Birmingham-FOX 6-Local and Birmingham-WBRC Birmingham-Local)

look at the file via browser: http://www.icpc.tv/OnLineTVMac/TVStat...

you can see in there the first channel contains 1 feed
the second one contains two feeds but only one of the feeds is showing

  • Okay, it took a while but I have figured this out. The software is displaying the two sources, but they are not named in your file, so they are showing up as blank.

The source name field is the fourth one in your list, so here is the old one without it:

    FEED^3^1001^http://www.tv-toolbar.com/tv.php?sour...
and here is the new one that I have fixed, calling it SOURCE1:

    FEED^3^1001^http://www.tv-toolbar.com/tv.php?sour...
Each source needs to have a source name so that the user knows which is which, and channels with more than one source will show the source list when you click on them.

  • If you right click those links and copy them you should be able to paste them into a text editor to see them in their entirety, I didn't realize it would shorten them like that.
