Easy Password Storage update lost all my data

I just updated my Easy Password Storage as prompted. When opening now my userid and password are not recognized and it appears all my passwords were lost. How can I recover this critical information?

  • Edit: As of version 4.2 this is no longer an issue. All passwords from previous versions will be automatically migrated to the proper location when upgrading.

    PROBLEM:

The Mac App Store now requires more strict security measures called sandboxing. Unfortunately, this prevents the new sandboxed app (version 3) from accessing data from previous versions.

Luckily, this only affects upgrading to version 3. Future upgrades will migrate all of your data automatically.

    SOLUTIONS:

If you have not yet upgraded you can simply export your passwords, upgrade, create a new user account and import your passwords.

Otherwise, after installing version 3, your accounts and passwords will be missing. Don't worry! They are still available on your hard drive.

To restore your passwords follow these steps. If you need help, email me at mike@rebrandsoftware.com.

    SOLUTION #1: AUTOMATED UTILITY:

    -Download http://www.rebrandsoftware.com/progra...
    -Double-click to extract the app
    -Open the app*
    -Press the "Copy" button
-Relevant files from version 2 will be copied to the new location for version 3

*Mountain Lion users may be prompted that the application is from an unknown developer because it is not signed with our developer certificate. If you encounter this error:

-Press Control, click the App, and select Open
-When prompted that the app is from an unknown developer, click "OK" to run it anyway

    SOLUTION #2: MANUALLY COPY FILES:

-Run Easy Password Storage version 3 at least once (to create the required directories)
    -Close Easy Password Storage
    -Open Finder
    -Navigate* to: ~/Library/Application Support/Easy Password Storage/
-Copy the files named "Keeper.DAT" and "prefs.rsd"
    -Navigate* to: ~/Library/Containers/com.rebrandsoftware.easypasswordstorage/Data/Library/Application Support/Easy Password Storage/
-Paste "Keeper.DAT" and "prefs.rsd", replacing the existing files
-Open Easy Password Storage again. Log in with your username and password. Your passwords will now be restored.

*HOW TO FIND THE LIBRARY FOLDER:
    -Open Finder
    -Hold down the OPTION key
    -Click the GO menu
-Click LIBRARY in the list that appears

SOLUTION #3: EXPORT PASSWORDS FROM VERSION 2:

    A) If you have Time Machine:

Restore version 2 of the app to your application directory, run it, and follow the directions in step C to export your password list.

    B) If you don't have Time Machine:

-Download an older copy of version 2 from our website:
    http://www.rebrandsoftware.com/demodo...
-Double-click to extract the zip file contents
    -Open the app*
-Choose demo mode, or when prompted for a registration username and password, enter the following:

    Username: PassMigrate
    Password: PassMigrate

*Mountain Lion users may be prompted that the application is from an unknown developer because it is not signed with our developer certificate. If you encounter this error:

-Press Control, click the App, and select Open
-When prompted that the app is from an unknown developer, click "OK" to run it anyway

    C) Export your password list

-Log in using your username and master password from version 2.
-Using the Export button, create an export of your passwords from version 2.
-Open version 3 from the app store.
-If necessary, recreate your user account, or log in
    -Click the Import button
    -Select your exported password file
-When prompted, enter your master password from version 2
-Your passwords should now be imported into version 3.

    ---------------

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience. Please email me at mike@rebrandsoftware.com if you need assistance. I'll make sure all of your data is properly migrated to the new version.

    Sincerely,

    -Mike

  • Hi!

    Thanks for the help.
    To answer your questions:
    - no I haven't deleted the app before upgrading
    - I have a single user account, so I haven't switched between accounts
    - I'm not sure to understand your last question

I tried to restore the Keeper.DAT file with time machine, but since I haven't deleted version 2, I can't do anything with it. How could I get the version 2 in order to do the "export-import" process?

    Thanks,

    Christophe

  • Hi Christophe,

If you can restore the application (Easy Password Storage 2 in the Applications directory) and also the data files (everything in Macintosh Hard Drive:[user]:Library:Application Support:Easy Password Storage) that should restore everything to how it was before your upgraded.

Then open the old app and choose Export > All Passwords > Encrypted.

That will create a file which contains all of your passwords and is encrypted with your master password.

Now install version 3 through the app store, create your user account again if you can't log in, and click Import. Choose the passwords file you exported earlier. Enter your old master password from the previous account and it will import all of your passwords into the new version.

I'm still waiting for a reply from Apple Developer Support but hopefully I can get this taken care of before more people encounter the problem.

So sorry about this! Thanks for your patience.

    Hi!
Everything OK. After updating to version 3 again, I was still unable to get the data. But with the export-import trick, it works.

Thank you, the problem is "circumvented", but not solved. I hope that everybody has a time machine working properly and regularly!

    Thanks,
    Ch.
PS: excuse-me for my ignorance with the use of time machine...

  • So here is what is going on:

Version 2 was created before the Mac App Store required sandboxing.

Version 3 is sandboxed. That means it cannot access certain parts of your hard drive.

The new version is unable to access the password database of the old version.

The solution is to copy the old files to the new "sandboxed" location.

Unfortunately, Apple made sandboxing a requirement for the Mac App Store, so there was nothing we could do between versions to prevent this.

I am currently developing a little utility which you can install to automate the process of copying the files to the new location. Hopefully I will have that finished tonight.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused! I'll keep working on it until it is fixed to everyone's satisfaction. All of the existing users of Easy Password Storage are very important to me. If you need help applying the fixes above please email me at mike@rebrandsoftware.com.

  • Hi Robert,

Could you try to navigate to the new data directory:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.rebrandsoftware.easypasswordstorage/Data/Library/Application Support/Easy Password Storage/

    Now right-click on "Keeper.DAT"
    Select "Get Info"
Is the "Locked" checkbox checked? If so, uncheck it.
    Expand "Sharing and Permissions"
Under "Me" do you have "Read & Write" access? If not, change it to Read & Write.

If that doesn't work, try changing every user listed to Read & Write.

  • I have two other solutions that might help

    1) I'm writing a little utility right now which will do the copying for you. That doesn't sound like it will work for you, though.

    2) I'm writing an alternative utility which will export your list from version 2 using the old, unsandboxed directory.

I should have both of those ready tonight and will post links here.

  • Robert, I have posted two new solutions at the top of the thread. Please let me know if they work for you. I think the solution where you briefly install version 2 is your best option.

I would recommend deleting the data file for version 3 before you try it:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.rebrandsoftware.easypasswordstorage/Data/Library/Application Support/Easy Password Storage/Keeper.DAT

That will force the app to create a new, non-read-only database.

Also, please feel free to email me if you're having trouble so that I can help you directly: mike@rebrandsoftware.com

  • Robert,

I haven't heard from you, and from your negative review in the app store it looks as though you are still having this issue.

Is there anything I can do to help? Please let me know the status.

I am not good at this. i can't login with what I thought was my old username and password. Not a question of losing login info as a result of upgrading at least not my best knowledge.

  • What if I recently had my hard drive wiped and now I went to open it on my new hard drive and it wont work? Had to re-install on my new hard-drive - so obviously it is the new version - and I cannot simply go and copy my files from the old version because it doesn't exist anymore.
please tell me they are somewhere on your server because I have lost everything on my computer and this would go a long way in making my day a slight bit better.

  • Hi Kirsten,

I'm sorry to tell you that we don't store any passwords on our server due to security concerns.

The software will export an encrypted password list which can be exported to a backup drive, email account, etc.

You can also restore it using TimeMachine on your Mac.

Alternatively, if you can access the old hard drive somehow you can pull the old password database off of it. Sometimes with old broken drives I will use a USB connector to plug them into my computer and am able to get files off them that way. Here is a link to the one I use, it's only $10 so it might be worth a try:

    http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-C...

Good luck! I know what a hassle this can be!
