IP Notification crashes constantly -> NilObjectException

Dear Support Team,
I am running IP Notificaiton (bought from the App Store) on a Mac Mini (10.8.2) to host my private Website and update the external IP adress on my DynDNS service (via a script).
On a very regular basis (sometimes multiple times a day), IP Notification crashes with the following message:
"An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down."
Please help me and find a solution to this. If I can send you any helpful logfiles, please let me know how and I will be happy to send them. My contact is: phillip -at- hahn -dot- net
Thanks a lot,
Phillip

  • Hi Phillip,

Would it be possible to email me the following at mike@rebrandsoftware.com:

    1) a screenshot of the main window so I can replicate your settings
    2) the information used in the "Website Notification" section where you point it at your script?

As long as I can replicate the error I should be able to get a fix out soon.

    Thanks!

    -Mike

P.S. I'm sending this to your email too.

  • IP Notification stopped working after trial expired. I have registered in the program several times now. Seems not to start properly and cannot access the settings before I get the NilObjectException error. Frustrating when actually I payed for it! Worked nicely until the trial expired it seems. Please reply to me on how to proceed. Tried reinstalling using the download link, but still not solved.

Edit: Im on windows 8.1. Firewall is disabled for IP Notification.

  • Hi Petter,

Could you tell me when it crashes?  It is right after you push Next or does it take a moment?

Also, is it still happening at all?  It seems we had some server maintenance the other day that might have affected your ability to get your external IP address.

This is the first I've heard of it crashing after registration so I will have to look into it.

Also, if you can find the version number anywhere that would help.  Normally it's in the About menu but I'm not sure if you can access that.

  • Hi Mike, thank you for your reply.

I made some more trouble shooting, including an uninstall and manually removing the folder C:/Users/user/Appdata/Roaming/IP Notification to get rid of all the config files.

The problem with registration seem to have solved itself, and after I reinstalled it I did not have to enter my credentials. Looking in the About tab it shows my registration information. And Im on version 4.6.

However, I still experience odd behaviour and have been able to reproduce the bugs described as below on my machine AND the/a NilObjectException error following these steps:

    WINDOW FLASHING BUG AFTER MINIMIZED
After I minimize the app to tray, I cannot open it to change settings without quitting from tray and restarting the app. The behaviour I experience is that when clicking on the tray icon OR right clicking and choosing "IP Notification", the window will only quickly flash, and then it closes instantly again, making it impossible to change any settings.

More serious it becomes when I tick the "Start minimized" setting. After that, I cannot change any settings since the app will have the same behavior as the above example, only that I wont get the settings window even when starting the app since its starting minimized.

This meaning once I tick "Start minimized" option I can no longer access the settings to change them back.

    REPRODUCE CRASH
To get the error and crash the app: Left click the tray icon and then immediately after, make a right click. Boom. NilObjectException error.

Also, starting the app starts with showing a blank white window, no logo no nothing. I already posted that picture in my last post.

  • Ok, I'm glad it has partly resolved itself.  I will check with the code for the tray icon.  I bet something changed in Windows 8.1 that is causing this behavior.

  • I have same issue here. Installed in window 8.1
Exactly what Petter came across. I did tried to unistall and manual remove data settings. Nothing much to help me out. Same crash, same flashing window.

Solution for me now is to downgrade to 4.5

I am a paid user as him. Please solve this case
