  • Runtime error 50003 is an indicator that an old version of Microsoft Common Controls is installed on your system. This could be a remnant of an old Visual Basic (VB) program, or a poorly installed program from another company.

Our software will always attempt to install the newest version of Microsoft common controls, in the following files:

    comctl32.ocx
    comdlg32.ocx

If there was an error during the installation and the files were not registered properly, or if another program was currently using an older version of these files so that they couldn't be overwritten, then you may encounter the errors in the subject of this article.

The first thing to do is to uninstall the program that is causing the error, close all open programs, and reinstall the software.

If that does not fix the problem you should try to download the most recent versions of the common controls from Microsoft here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/de...

Restart your computer after installing. This should resolve the problem. If not, please post here and give us the program name you are having trouble with.

Another possible problem is a corrupt icon file. A corrupt icon may work on some systems but not others, with no identifiable reason. If you ordered a custom icon from us and found that your software immediately gives you an "Unexpected Error" this may be the case. If so, rebuilding the icon may help. Please post here with your program name so that we can investigate.

    ¡He alli el problema!

    [English (Translate.Google)]:

I read the contents of the "Post" and helped me find the problem.

I use Visual Studio 6.0 on a virtual machine for the maintenance of an application made with the language and actually, in my case, the problem was the size of the icon assigned to MDI Form. The design was done in Adobe Illustrator and become an icon with Axialis IconWorkshop 6.

Turns out this file besides having dimenciones 16x16 to 32x32 also had those same dimenciones but RGBA, 32x32RGBA ie, something that makes IconWorkshop and works great. However, I also included in that format dimenciones 64 and 128 (64RGB and 128RGBA) ...

    There is the problem!

After so doing, comment in the code, remove, add and give me headaches ... Remove these icon file formats, leaving only 16-32 (256 Colors) and 16RGBA - 32RGBA, I returned to assign that icon to my application, compile the executable and ready.

Desert! ... The problem occurred only on client computers in the development machine not happened. It's funny that the problem existed in Windows 7 Professional Edition SP1 (development is on Windows XP Professional SP2).

  • Hi TD,

Yes, I'm here.  Let me know what your problem is.  It's best to handle it here in public so that if other users have the same problem they can find the answer.

    Cheers,

  • Hi Paulo,

I'm afraid this support forum is only for Rebrand Software products, but you can contact the developer of that app and point them toward this page if you want.  Maybe they can use some information here to help you.

  • Hello Mike, if you are still there. It says, above, that this was posted one year ago but I just started working on the Run-Time error 50003 a few days ago so I hope I haven't lost you.

I agree with you that the answers should be posted so that others can be helped as well. But sometimes it is hard for me to remember where i asked a question, that is why I asked for the email.

My Run-time error 50003 problem is happening on Windows 8 only and only for certain programs. I have 7 programs, AB & CDEFG. All of these programs are nearly identical. All of the programs work on Windows XP and Windows 7. However A & B give me the 50003 error on Windows 8 but the rest of them work fine on windows 8.

I tried getting rid of the icons altogether, that didn't work.

I noticed that you mentioned two DLL files, COMCTL32.DLL & COMDLG32.DLL.

I tried installing the COM controls as suggested, that didn't work.

I checked Microsoft and they said that the 50003 problem might be an icon problem but that error number is a catch-all for many different kinds of errors so they are not sure what is causing the error.

There was some mention from Microsoft about loading GIF files, that might be a problem.

My next step is to strip down one of the non-working files until I can find what is making it hang up.

Please send me an email so I won't forget to get back with you.

    Thank You!

  • Mike, I found the problem. As it turned out, each of the forms within my programs had an icon attached to it to identify the form. Those icons were fine. There was however, another icon within one of the forms attached to a command button, to play sounds. Once I identified where the problem was, and then changed the icon, everything works fine now. That's it. TD :-)

  • Nice!  Thanks for replying.  I believe the same thing has happened to me with a corrupt icon in a VB6 form and it took forever to track it down.

  • Mike, I had another problem also. It had to do with my program was causing a Windows 7 shutdown screen to appear / pop up.

Why don't you ask about that in a forum, shoot a message to me and I'll answer it if you'd like.

    Best Wishes!
