Some TV Shows are black on Windows 7

I'm having problems getting some TV shows to play in the WebTV software on Windows 7. Specifically, Married with Children is not working. Some streams work, and others don't. How can I fix this?

    I’m confident
Thanks for reporting this to us.

I just opened up a copy of the software on Windows 7 and tried to view Married With Children. I used the Hulu stream that is available to U.S. viewers. I believe you're in the U.S. too based on your phone number.

I played s7e26 and s7e12. Both worked fine.

These streams are both using flash. My suspicion is that if you update Flash on the Win7 computer it will work. The WebTV software is actually using Internet Explorer on Windows and Safari on Mac, so make sure you update Flash for those browsers.

To update Flash click on Settings > Adobe Flash Player > Check online.

For IE I had this version installed: 10,1,53,64

For FireFox I had this version installed: 10,1,102,64

I don't think either of those are the newest, but they're not too old either.

    Some other potential problems:

    -Hulu went down temporarily?
    -Your internet went out
-They are putting up a weird ad that the WebTV software thinks is the video stream. This is certainly possible. Next time you get the black screen right click it and select "View Source", then post the source here and I will examine it. If there is a problem I can update the software through an update.

For the streams I will need you to be specific. Which streams don't work? The solution will vary based on the stream.

    Cheers,

    -Mike

  • Well there is nothing wrong with the source, it's actually embedding the shows directly into the page above. Can you see it on your Win7 machine?

  • No, I can't see it on the Win7 machine (big black boxes) I can only see it on the Vista machine.

  • Interesting. At least we have narrowed down enough to say that it's not a problem with the WebTV software itself, but a problem somehow related to either Flash or to Hulu, or possibly your browser(s).

Here are some thoughts while I look for more info:

-Do you get the black boxes above no matter what browser (IE,Firefox,Chrome, etc)?

-Are you using any addons like AdBlock Plus that might be blocking content?

-Are you using a software firewall like AVG that might be blocking content from hulu or the servers that they stream content from? See this for a possible fix:

  • From all circumstances encountered it seems like it's a Windows 7 compatibility issue.

-Do you get the black boxes above no matter what browser (IE,Firefox,Chrome, etc)?
    - Yes. All systems run both Firefox and IE.

-Are you using any addons like AdBlock Plus that might be blocking content?
    - No

-Are you using a software firewall like AVG that might be blocking content from hulu or the servers that they stream content from?
    - No. My systems (Vista, Win7) are running Norton AV with firewall. My business partner is running McAfee on his Vista and Win7 system.

The Vista systems and the Windows 7 systems are configured identical (browsers, anti-virus, flash player) the only thing that is different between the two is: the one that works is running Vista, the one that doesn't work is running Windows 7.
