What do to if ScoreGeek stops responding or adding new data

If you encounter this error: rest assured that a fix is on the way for version 1.5 which should be released in February/March 2015. You can follow the instructions below for a temporary fix until then.

ScoreGeek version 1.4 is limited to only 5-10 MB of storage space in the database. This limit is imposed by the device and can vary depending on your operating system.

In version 1.5, the app is being upgraded to use a different database system called IndexedDB which has unlimited space.

If you log a lot of games or fill up the space with photos you will reach a point where the app seems to freeze whenever you try to add data (games, players, sessions, etc).

If you find yourself unable to use the app the easiest way to clear up space is to do the following:

A) Try to use avatars instead of player photos
B) Try to get game icons from BoardGameGeek instead of photos
C) Try to delete any old session photos

If you are able to delete photos or replace them with icons/avatars it should clear up a considerable amount of space. If you cannot delete items due to the bug preventing any action, try the following:

1) Create a cloud account from Settings > Cloud
2) Log into the cloud from your device, your data will be synced to the cloud
3) Open the free desktop version of ScoreGeek from a desktop computer: http://www.rebrandsoftware.com/ScoreG...
4) Log into the cloud from the desktop version and wait for data to sync
5) When you have verified that all of your data is synced, delete the app from your device
6) Reinstall ScoreGeek
7) Open ScoreGeek, log into the cloud, sync the data back to your device

Deleting the app has removed unnecessary data, so even after syncing your data back to the app you should still have available space. To regain extra space, perform steps A, B, and C above.

When version 1.5 is released your old database will be automatically converted to the newer database with unlimited space, avoiding this issue in all future versions. If you are using an iOS device, make sure it is version 8+ as version 7 and lower do not support the new database system (IndexedDB) and will continue to use the older database system (LocalStorage).

  • Update:

Version 1.5 was released for Android and iOS in April 2015 and contains a fix for Android 4.4+ and a workaround for iOS.

Android 4.4+ users will notice the app automatically converting their database the first time they open version 1.5 of ScoreGeek. It should run faster and have unlimited storage space available, fixing the problem people were seeing where the app ran out of room and stopped responding.

Unfortunately, I could not release this fix for iOS 8 because of bugs on iOS. Specifically, there are problems accessing stored photos and images, and there are bugs in their database system. Neither of these bugs have been fixed as of iOS 8.3, so I am going ahead with the release but without the database upgrade.

Instead of a database upgrade the app will now detect any errors and direct users to a cleanup tool which can move their photos from being stored within the app to being stored on the device, using a much smaller amount of space. This workaround should temporarily solve the problem for most iOS users.

As soon as the iOS bugs are fixed I will release an update that allows users to convert to the new database system. As a bonus, the app will then use the new WKWebView browser which is new to iOS 8 and much faster.

Hopefully it won't be long until they fix it. In the mean time iOS users can still benefit from all the other new features coming in 1.5.

  • There is an additional fix available in ScoreGeek 1.5:

Go to Settings > Delete Stuff > Cleanup Tool. This tool will allow you to identify game and player photos which are taking up a large amount of room and delete them, replacing them with avatars.
