I’m mad

saturn vue transmission

I bought a 2003 Saturn VUE in December of 2005 from Saturn of Troy in Michigan. Not even six months after I bought the vehicle the head gasket blew and we had to replace it. A year and a half later, the transmission went out. I found out it will cost me $ 6000 to repair it and I owe $7700 on the vehicle. We also found out there are no cheaper options as we looked around only to find others in the same situation. Since the Transmission and repair costs are so high, the junk yard charges a higher price on used ones which in our minds isn't the best way to go about fixing the car. I have driven GM/American cars almost my whole adult life. Since I can't afford to repair the car at a decent cost, I now have to go upside down on another vehicle. My wife along with this situation is forcing over to toyota.

  • Leslie, there's no saturn dealer here..I have to deal with GM & they said that's the best they could do for me.... I don't think there's any law suits going on in Canada with saturn.

  • Are we talking about the 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder engine? I have a 2003 6 cylinder Vue and the transmission control module has konked out on my. Once that is fixed I will have to see if the transmission itself is also in need of replacement. I'm already about $1200 in the hole including towing expenses. My car only has 63,000 miles on it and it's been paid off for several years so I do NOT want buy a new car.

  • My saturn vue is a 4 cylinder AWD, it depends if it has the VTI transmission, that is what goes on it and it usually goes around 70,000 miles, you would qualify for getting half the cost covered if you take it to a saturn dealership and they actually diagnose the problem as being the tranny

Add me to this unbelievably long list. My 2004 Vue's transmission just died. The whole car seems to be falling apart all of a sudden, 112000 miles. Transmission, cooling system, belts, etc. Everything is leaking and I was told I was driving a "death trap". I don't know what to do. I don't want to put more into to fix it than it is worth, especially when I still owe $9k and will have to get a loan to fix it.

My car has been at the Saturn service for almost two weeks. They put a new tcm (transmission control module) in and still a problem so now they have to pull out the transmission and try to diagnose. I'm already out $1300 at least. My VUE is the 6 cylinder and only has 63,000 miles of flat, Florida, driving within 5 miles of my house!

  • you need to take it to a saturn delaership right away, if it's slipping that means the transmission is going. How many miles are on it? There is a 1-800 saturn number you can call to find out if you qualify for the half off of getting it replaced. See other posts on here for detailed information and numbers that you can call.

  • Add me to the 25 plus pages of people with Saturn Vue's that have replaced transmissions and now have the need to replace the transmission AGAIN! And yes, I'm still paying on my loan as well! This transmission went within 6 months of replacement!! My story...I have Multiple Sclerosis and am on SSDI. I really can't afford the 50%!! I had to pay 25% for the last one because I am the 2nd owner and that's how the Class Action Suit is set up! My opinion...this all really sucks! I am in the process of sending a complaint to my Attorney General.

Well, we got GM to offer 1/2 of the cost to repair the transmission but the service center was quoting us upwards of $5000. So we took the car out of there and gave it to a shop that will re-build it for under $2000. He took it apart and found out that the pump that holds the transmission fluid exploded! Hmmm. Might be making a call to GM again to see if this is a potential recall issue.

SAME STORY!!! 2002-2006 Vue and Ion Transmissions.

A class action suit was filed against GM and they lost.

The class action stated that GM "must" reimburse 100% to fix the transmission if less 100,000 miles and before 1/11/2011 and 75% if less than 125,000 and before 1/11/2011. I had 118,000 on my transmission. They are also required to pay towing, rental and reinburse you (if you had to trade the car in) the difference between the amount you recieved and the amount car is worth.

I called GM and they refused to pay. They stated that GM liquidated and when they did part of the lquidation states that they no longer had to pay for transmissions with more then 100,000 miles.

I had to have a car so I traded the Vue for $500. I recently retired and did not want a car payment.

I have called everyone: Attorney General, Justice Dept., Congressmen, Senators, news stations, etc. I was told to get all the numbers for the class action and liquidation and contact GM's lawyers and demand they pay. I have the Attorney General's Office working on it.

This really makes me mad. We bailed them out and are paying for that and now have to eat the money for their transmissions.

    I WILL GET MY MONEY!!!!!!

To get the above info. look for 2003 Vue Transmissions pertainig to GM Class Action Suit. Also look for Motors Liquidation inc.; you will see that thay liquidated and changed the names of the companys.

    SLICK!!!!!

If you can not find info. let me know and I will try to copy and paste and get to you.

    Luck to you all.

  • Karen - where do you find the info that they will cover 100% if it's less than 100k miles? Mine is a 2003 with 96k and I've only been told they'd cover 50%....so it's been sitting for 3 months while I pay payments and try to figure out how to fix it .... I'd really appreciate any help!!
    • I'm having the same problem they are saying that they will cover only 50% the quote was for $5700. I asked if I could just by the transmission and have my own mechanic put it in but they said that I wouldn't get the 50% off because it has to be put in by them. Not sure what to do now..

General Motors’ Agrees To Compensate For Faulty Saturn Transmissions

    Greg Webb
    Attorney
    (866) 735-1102 Ext 530

Posted by Greg Webb September 18, 2008 9:00 AM

General Motors Corp. has agreed to pay about $90 million or more to tens of thousands of motorists in all fifty states for expenses they acquired due to faulty transmissions in more than 90,000 Saturn economy cars. If agreed to by a Sacramento federal judge, the agreement would settle a class-action lawsuit targeting particular models of four-cylinder Saturn Vues and Ion, which were equipped with “Vti” transmissions. Unlike conventional automatic systems, which use gears to shift at a few fixed points, the Vti transmission is a “continuously variable” system that operates using belts and pulleys to shift between the gears. The class-action lawsuit is comprised of all United States residents that own or previously owned a 2002-2005 model Saturn Vue, new or used, equipped with a Vti transmission or a 2003 through 2004 model year Ion, new or used, equipped with a Vti transmission. At least 8,525 new models were sold in California.
The class-action lawsuit claims the Vti system made the transmission especially prone to early failure. The agreement made between General Motors and the class members has been given preliminary approval by a U.S District Court Judge. Once the claim forms have gone out to the motorists affected and returned to the company, and each claimant’s eligibility has been established, the judge will hold a hearing on February 17 to issue a final ruling. Under the proposed agreement, General Motors will reimburse eligible owners or former owners for repairs, car rental, trade-in losses and towing related to the transmission. Preliminary approval for $2,500 in compensation for helping attorneys in the suit was also given to the seven representative plaintiffs named in the complaint. The judge balked, however, at the $4.3 million attorneys requested for their fees; the attorneys contend this is a reasonable amount since it is less than five percent of the estimated settlement amount.
In this author's opinion (perhaps biased, since I am an attorney who represents injured people, although I do not handle class action work), the attorneys fees requested are very reasonable, given the fact that, without these attorneys pursuing this case, Saturn Vue owners would have had little or no ability for compensation or redress. The lawyers involved likely had a lot of risk involved in pursuing this case. This appears to be a good example of the beneficial intent and purpose behind class action lawsuits.

    VTI Transmission Class Action

I got a letter today that GM has settled a class action lawsuit out of court. You can opt out but if you don't you get what is like an extended warranty on the transmission.

It covers the cost of a replacement transmission, installation, replacement car for the time need to finish repair, and any towing costs. The cost are covered 100% up to 100,000 miles or in my case Jan 11, 2011. If you go over 100,000 miles you are covered for 75% of costs up to 125,000 miles and again in my case Jan 11, 2011.

The settlement also covers past repairs and costs for lost value on a trade in due to a broken Vti (like if you traded the car in when the tranny broke because you didn't want to fix it and took a lower trade in value because of it).

This is probably the best we were ever going to get. For a long time it looked like us VTI owners were just stuck.

The Saturn dealers are going to have the form if you need it. The lawyers are also sending me a claim form for my own file.
    REWARD EXCELLENCE!

  • Just like many of you I bought a brand new Saturn Vue 2003 in the year 2003 and sole owner. In April 2010 as I was on my way to Trader Joe's my Saturn Vue just slowed down and I thought what is going on here and had the good sense to pull over to the side of the road but did not make it as the vehicle completely stopped. Fortunately, it was early morning and the road was not busy. I fail to think if it was, I know another vehicle would have slammed in the back of my vehicle causing who knows what sort of injury or death. Anyway, I had AAA flatbed tow my vehicle to the dealership where I bought it and maintained it all these years. For the record the mileage on my Vue 44,321 miles when it was towed into the dealership service area in April 2010. I left the Vue there overnight and the following day I received a call from the service manager telling me there is an issue with the Vti transmission (it crumbled) and that I am looking at $3000-$5000 to have the transmission rebuilt. I said how can the transmission go out? I only have 44,000 plus miles on it and only drive 4-5 miles one way to work and back and then the occasional around town driving and once in a while out-of-town. No heavy and terrible road conditions or hard driving. I was so upset especially since I was laid off from work some months prior to that and thought how the hell am I going to pay. I contacted GM-Saturn office there in the MidWest who have their iron clad henchmen/women on the frontline warding off consumers who had purchased the Saturn Vues as well as the Ions stating "that is company policy and that is how much you have to pay - no exceptions." That just aggravated me even more as they would not take responsibility or want to be accountable for purposefully selling a vehicle with a defective transmission that could cost the life of some. So told the service manager I cannot pay $3000-$5000 and that is was absurd since it was not sometime that I did to cause a problem. I left the vehicle at the the dealership service department for one month and the following month I spoake with the service manager again and said I really can't pay that kind of money. I think he really took pity on me and said he would try his best and talk to his people and the amount was reduced to $1000 which still hurt, but not as bad as $3000-$5000.

On investigation I found out that GM-Saturn still has a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT (still pending as I type (9/10/10) against them. They filed bankruptcy to get out of being liable to over 150,000 plus consumer complaints filed against them saying "they are a new GM and the old GM was responsible." My question to GM is..."when you change your clothes are you a different person that you don't inhale?" What crappola!

Anyway for all those whose Saturn vehicles that are defective below is the contact information for the litigators handling the class action law suit againt GM-Saturn. I hope this will be helpful to all the GM-Saturn victims.

NOTE: You can still put your information forward to the litigator even now (9/9/10). Remember to keep all information and documentation that transpired between yourself, GM and your dealership service department or whoever you chose to carry out the repairs. A copy of your information and documentation can be submitted to the litigators which can contribute towards making this class action suit more powerful. However, on saying that there is no way to know how the JUDGE will decide, but it does not hurt to participate in getting a resolve for the injustice and lack of integrity of GM.

  • Has anyone been successful taking their own legal action?

A friend of mine suggested I draw up a document, with help from a lawyer (for anywhere from $25 to $100 bucks) and ask GM if they are willing to still grant me the $5000 rebate or buy-out, despite being over the 100,000 mile limit. My friend thinks that since my re-built tranny has only lasted me 10- or 15,000 miles before acting up again, that I have some kind of legal ground to stand on--that my overall mileage shouldn't exclude me from the class action. He thinks by even threatening to sue, they might be willing to offer me the same resolution as one under the 100,000 limit. I could site time away from work, repair costs and loss-of-trade-in value. My local GM dealer barely even wanted to TOUCH my Vue when I was looking for trade-in. I would hope that less an all-out petition, we might have recourse through legal action.

Time to call on our lawyer fiends....I happen to have a few.

  • Well, I've still got the AG involved with me and GM because my replacement tranny that I had to pay 25% of crapped out 1200 miles OVER the warranty after I had complained continuously that there was something wrong with it! So yes, GM replaced it at no charge to me finally. But because it sat for over 8 months, there were several other issues...things wrong with the car that needed to be fixed before I could even drive the car! The dealership wanted well over $2,000 to fix those issues! I ended up having to flatbed the Vue out of the dealership after the new transmission was put in to have someone else fix these other issues cheaper! Now the AG is going after GM for these issues! So now I'm on 9 months of not having my car...still fighting for it...putting more $ into it and still paying the loan on it! Trade it in?? Yeah right...I got laughed at! Even the auctions don't want them! Personally, I think GM should take every one of them back and put us all in something comprable! I don't beat on my vehicles. I'm a middle aged woman with MS and don't even drive much...mostly back and forth to doctor appointments. That's all I need the vehicle for. Just give me something that's dependable!

  • IT IS FINISHED! I'm having the title company cart away my Vue this morning. The tranny finally konked out for good Saturday. I had to drive it in reverse for the last 3 miles of country backroads to get 'er in the driveway. I owed a couple grand more than it's 'market value', so I'm taking a bit of a hit on my credit...but am RELIEVED to not have to pay for that piece of crap anymore.

A local car dealer caught wind of my facebook status and had me call him. He'll work with me despite having a new entry on my credit right now saying 'Repo'. Hey...gotta do what cha gotta do.

Best wishes for the rest of you....as of today, I am a new NON-Saturn Vue owner....and am loving it!!

  • I’m going to continue being sad as long as I own my Saturn Vue
Well, I finally have my Saturn back with it's THIRD transmission and not a penny out of my pocket for this one. Although MANY PENNIES OUT OF MY POCKET for all the other work that needed to be done because of the fact it had sat for almost 9 months not garaged during the winter months in the northeast. At this point it looks like I'm just going to have to run this vehicle in to the ground as there is nobody intelligent that would buy it nor any dealership in the world who would take it on trade. The last time I tried to trade it in was a year and a half ago and was offered $1500! A 2004 was valued in the NADA book for trade in value at $3500! I don't drive much anymore as I am disabled, so maybe it'll last. Here's hoping! In the meantime, I'll be reading all the new complaints and updates being posted!

I was just denied having my transmission fixed because we just went out of warranty and are at 93k miles. I'm infuriated that they deny having sold me a lemon after having read all of these experiences on here which are very much like mine. Even my mechanic said "oh, these slip shift transmissions are no good, they break down all the time" and also let me know that no mechanic wants to go inside these things and try to fix them. The dealer who sold me the car, assured me that the transmission was one of the best ever invented. I promise to NEVER buy a GM car EVER again.

    • Svandervort ~ You got $5400 for a trade in???? The most I was ever offered for my 2004 Vue was $1500!! And that, as they said, was stretching it!

Dee0321 - contact your Attorney General to give you a hand. That's what I ended up doing. Plus there's a class action suit against Saturn for the CVT tranny. Continue looking through these posts for further information.

  • I’m frustrated
    Hi,
I bought my Vue in 2003 new. Since then I have had the transmission replaced 5x and now the 5th is starting to slip. The 2x - the trany went out on 8/2x/10 and then again on Labor Day. The Labor Day repair, Saturn wanted to only pay 50% because of the bankruptcy. However, I was furious because the prev tranny only lasted 2.5 weeks and thought I shouldnt have to pay one dime. After bitching and complaining and working with the service mgr at the now former Saturn dealership where I bought it from...they finally agreed to pay 75%. Because I am on SSDI and dont have an extra dime to spare, the dealership picked up 50% leaving me with a bill of $500.
I still was not happy. I worked for GM for 14 years and have been driving one type of their product since 1984. The service mgr told me that is why they offered to pay 75% instead of 50%. Now the Labor Day tranny goes---it is starting to slip again.

As far as anyone who bought their Vue used goes.... you are pretty much out of luck according to the letter sent out by Saturn concerning the bankruptcy and this issue---sent a couple of years ago.
I am fairly good at working my way up to the top...and exhausted my resources and energy to fight anymore.

The entire issue with the 2003 Vue is bogus. They knew they were putting in a bad tranny from the begining. How could they not?? This tranny is nothing more than a way for them to get more revenue from service. This tranny contains belts AND oily type fluid. Now who would do a stupid thing like that??? Geeeee, I wonder if they think putting oil on my surpentine belt would be a good idea????

I wonder what would happen if all of the Saturn Vue people got together in one spot-- like GM headquaarters if they would finally get the message?????

Good luck.....my next car will be a Honda--pee on Govt Motors.

  • Rosie,

I am sorry that you are yet another victim of the Saturn Vue transmission. It has been over a year since mine went out, and as far as I know, no new actions seemed to have surfaced. I wish you the best. If you hear of anything don't hesitate to post; I'd like to know.

The bank is coming to repossess our Saturn Vue in the next day or two... there was no way we could afford the high prices to fix or replace ($4k) it and wound up buying another used car instead. We miss the Vue, and are mad at GM. They would not stand behind their product even though the warranty only expired a very short time before the breakdown.

If any word of a class action going forward, please keep us informed,

  • I was made aware of the class action lawsuit at the time my transmission failed. However, when I contacted the law firm I was advised that the class action was closed, (which had something to do with GM going belly up) and that I did not qualify due to the date that I purchased my Vue. It became my understanding that a new law suit was in process, but I haven't heard any updates. I got rid of the Saturn, which was fortunately paid off when the transmission went out, but the overall situation cost me nearly $25k.

  • I’m confused
    Hi,

Can Someone help me out here? I'm really at a crossroads with the vehicle. We bought a 2003 Saturn Vue 2.2L, 4 cyl, AWD, with VTi and 52,000 miles Februrary 2010. Now, January 2011, at 69,000 miles the transmission completely failed without warning. It did ride a little rougher than most cars and we had our rear driveshaft removed a few months ago due to a shot bushing on the splitter to the rear driveline.

Last week the transmission failed while traveling high speed and was towed immediately to our mechanics shop. He's trying to shop around for estimates. Meanwhile, I called AAMCO and Performance Chevrolet for some figures and both shops estimate $4,500 for repair (Chevrolet) or replacement (AAMCO). We still owe right around $5,000 and I just cannot come to terms with cutting our losses with this vehicle. We traded our Toyota Camry which never gave us any trouble for this vehicle last year. And we certainly can't incur any further credit damage.

There must be some alternative to the $4,500+ figures since it appears that is not likely to last. AAMCO recommended a factory remanufactured transmission for 4,500. Would this be any better? Even if it was there's no way we can come up with that much money. We love this car and it's been great on long distance trips. I'm very frustrated and depressed and can't figure out which direction to go with this situation. Someone please help us?

    Thanks,
    Charles

  • Yes. That is the great sadness with this vehicle. All Saturn Vues and Ions between 2002 and 2004 were put out on the market with KNOWN faulty parts from General Motors. The price quoted to you is about right for the most part and since GM has closed their Saturn service stations and Chevrolet is handling Saturn vehicles now it is going to be a bit difficult. The transmission were no longer being made so you will NEVER get a new one, only one that is rebuilt. So all the transmissions that failed to begin with are being rebuilt and put back out on the market.

It is sad and goes to show that there is no integrity in business. GM filed bankruptcy while holding Saturn owners at bay so that they can rename themselves as the new GM and get out of the responsibility of paying the costs of replacing the transmissions to customers. The government bailed out GM as many of your may recall.

Updates should be posted at http://www.lakinlaw.com/CM/ClassActio...
lawyers handling the class action lawsuit against GM. You might want to make sure your name is on their list.. There may or may not be a settlement as I am sure GM will stretch this out far longer than the Mississippi River!

Good luck and sorry cannot tell you were to turn to now.

  • I think what would be great is to plan a specific date in the year whereby all owners of Vues and Ions whose (GM-KNOWN PROBLEM) transmissions that died and other problems (whether you cannot afford to have it fixed or even if you could), to place all those vehicles on the business site (parking lot if you wish) of General Motors headquarters in whatever U.S. state they might be. It would be like dumping trash on their front lawn. Nice thought, but would be expensive to do unless you are local to them. I wish I had a magic wand to be able to do that.

I have an extremely hard time with the fact that there hasn't been some form of government announcement against these vehicles! My conclusion is the fact that perhaps we, as consumers, just don't do enough research before making a major purchase. This obviously includes dealerships because they are still selling them as if nobody knows. Only in America.

  • I’m angry at GM
Saturn's problems were acknowldedged by GM long ago when they discontinued the line. The Saturn Vue 2002/03 or 03/04 had that dumb VTI transmission. there was another model that also had it, but evidently the Vue was to big for the VTI. Only answer I can give you now, get rid of your Saturn as fast as you can. I dumped mine just before I had to have the 7th transmission installed.
Good luck to everyone. I used to work for GM and fought every corner I could crawl into and didnt get anywhere. GM is now owned by the govt....get out of the Saturn asap.
    Good luck

  • I very recently have also suffered at the hands of Saturn. My tansmission gave out at 127,000 km. I purchased my piece of S&*& 2004 Saturn 3 years ago and paid $11,000.00 in cash for it. With this being said yes I am lucky I do not have car payments BUT i also dont have an extra $300-$500 in my budget monthly to purchase a new car. GM offered to pay 50% of the trandmission repairs which is $3500.00 or a $5000.00 credit towards a brand new 2011 GM. Neither a great choice really especially if you dont have that kid of money. (which I dont) I have been without a car for over a week and starting to get very frustrated and angry. Really GM you know your transmission is garbage so what is taking so long damn it! Although my local GM dealership is being very helpful by providing me with a loner to get around. I am still a bit confused on what is taking so long for a decision to be made as to whether or not I am eligible to receive assisstance with this hunk of junk car. I am from Canada and all I am seeing here are American stories. Is there a site specific to individuals with these issues for Canadians? SO now I wait to see what GM is going to do! This is not fair to these Vue owners to be faced with these wait times or these substantial costs when Saturn KNEW this would happen. Any advice would be greatly appriciated!

    • Saturn VTi Transmission - Status of Settlement (Bankruptcy Court Ruling)

As you know, the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement was stayed due to Old GM's bankruptcy. We filed an adversary proceeding against New GM in bankruptcy court to determine whether New GM assumed Old GM's obligations under the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement. The trial was held on December 14, 2011. On April 17, 2012, the Bankruptcy Court issued its ruling deciding that New GM did NOT assume Old GM's obligations under the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement. To view a copy of the Court's ruling, please click here. We plan to appeal the Bankruptcy Court's decision.

VTi problems occurring BEFORE January 1, 2012. Unfortunately, we cannot further assist you until the adversary proceedings has reached finality, including appeals. Until then, you should continue to contact New GM's Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-553-6000, and keep all documents and detailed notes of your conversations with New GM representatives and dealers.

VTi problems occurring ON or AFTER January 1, 2012. Regardless of whether we prevail in the adversary proceeding, the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement only provided benefits for VTi problems occurring BEFORE certain dates depending upon the model year of your Saturn. For the precise dates applicable to your vehicle, please review the class notice. If you have experienced a VTi problem after the date applicable to your Saturn, then the expenses associated with that particular failure is not covered by the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement.

For updates regarding the adversary proceedings and the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement, please continue to periodically check our web-site.

  • I have actually opted to get the $5000.00 discount on a new vehicle I am going with a 2011 Chevy Cruze due to budget purposes...meaning I really really would have liked an SUV. But due to unexpected car payments I am goign with a car.
I figured with all these issues with the transmission getting it fixed/rebuilt for $3500.00 when it is only worth $4500.00-$5000.00 at most is not worth it to me AT ALL to fix it.... I am ONLY buying GM because of the $5000.00 discount otherwise I would be going with something completely different... and I still dont even have word to see if thi has been approved yet soo it is a waititng game! LOTS of red tape involved!
    • Well I hope that works better for you. Our dilemma is that we still owe $4,000 on this loan and its about the same to fix it. I wouldn't mind making the investment but they only offer a maxium 2 year 24,000 mile warranty on a reman. I'd be rolling dice putting it in and exceeding the warranty and probably right back where I am now before I knew it.

  • I purchased a 2.2 saturn vue (2003) in dec 2009. the warranty that i got suckered into expired in dec 2010. of course shortly after, i started having different problems. now here we are in october of 2011, with over $5,000 left to pay on the car and its not drive-able. the reduced power light and service engine soon lights are on and you can feel it slipping. i drive over an hour to work daily so needless to say, i dont feel safe even attempting to try to use it to get to work. i am so stressed out and have no idea what to do. No mechanic will touch it so i had to take it to a GM dealer. they want to charge me $4,500 to fix it. they had the nerve to tell me that if they rebuilt it or put in an old transmission, it would only be $200 less. not only that but they tell me that the codes that they read off it indicates that i MAY STILL have a problem after the transmission is fixed.... really? i have contacted saturn and am waiting on a reply. I am beyond frustrated and really am amazed (not in a good way) that this can happen to people who spend their hard earned money investing in a vehicle! the car has 88,000 miles on it

  • Dear Cheetahslady... I should say Dear Cheated lady.. as that is what Saturn has done to you. Join the club! Saturn (GM) may still have the class action lawsuit against them. They declared bankruptcy to get out of paying all the customers who bought Saturn Vue with a KNOWN faulty transmission. I encourage everyone to get in touch and stay in touch with the law firm handling the class action law suit. Make sure they have your name in their database. I think, if I am not mistaken, Saturn has over 150,000 claims against for this problem. I have a 2003 Vue with under 55,000 miles on it... never had to drive far from work..hence the low mileage on it.

    Here is the website; http://www.lakinlaw.com/CM/ClassActio...

By the way, when my Vue went dead on me because of the faulty transmission, I parked on the lot of the dealership for 6 weeks. I told them Saturn-GM is responsible and I was not going to pay $5000-$6000 for a KNOWN problem sold to the public under false pretenses. I was absolutely livid! Can't even sell the dam thing as scrap to boot!

I hope you find some resolution.

  • Thank you so much Mclabhran! I actually saw you post this link earlier, so I emailed them immediately. They responded promptly with some information that should help me.... Here's what they said:

"The Class consists of all persons who are residents of the United States and who purchased a new or used 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2005 model year Saturn VUE or 2003 or 2004 model year Saturn ION equipped with a continuously variable VTi transmission (“Vehicles”). The Vehicle must have been purchased prior to January 9, 2009, and have/had less than 125,000 miles at the time of the repair/replacement of the VTi transmission.

Based on the information you provided, you purchased a 2003 Saturn VUE equipped with a VTi transmission, after January 9, 2009. Unfortunately, you do not meet the criteria of the settlement.

I have attached a copy of a New Special Reimbursement Policy for Vehicles Equipped with Variable Transmission with Intelligence (VTi) Transmission (#09280) (“New Policy”). We are unable to offer advice regarding New GM’s New Special Reimbursement Policy, as it is not associated with the Saturn VTi Class Action Settlement. If you have any questions about the New Policy, then please contact the Saturn Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-972-8876.

Additionally, I have included some helpful addresses/links that you may find useful.

  • I’m sickened!!!
I am one of those people who got the 2002 Saturn Vue "dumped" on them through a private party. I paid $5000 for this vehicle because I thought I was getting a great looking car with only 88,000 miles! I used the car for about two weeks, put about 150 miles on it and the transmission went!!! Talk about an expensive rental??? I cannot afford to replace or fix the transmission because I am unemployed. This car was suppose to aide me in finding employment, but now it just sits here looking pretty and not doing what it was meant to do...FUNCTION!!! Now I am out $5000, I do not have a car, and I cannot get a job. GM should have put all these defective cars to rest so other unsuspecting car buyers were not burdened with unreliable pieces of junk. I am currently paying insurance on a car I cannot drive!!!! I am not the second owner so I cannot receive any type of discount through GM... Any suggestions???

  • I have a 2003 Vue and my transmission went out at 96,000 miles this month. Even though I purchased it 9 years ago, GM still honored the 50/50 warranty and I paid $2675 out of pocket.

The warranty on the remanufactured transmission is 12 months/12,000 miles. I would have paid that much in new car payments after 6 months. If I can get a another year out of the car (and another year of no car payments), it will be worth it.

I recently bought a 2003 saturn vue it looked like such a great deal. Im a single mom who recently had a wreck. I used my insurance money to buy the car cash. I ran the car 85 miles and transmisson gave out. The person who sold it to me knew what they were doing. I had towed to transmission shop. I was quoted 5400, 36000 miles I couldnt get it fixed.Had to pay transmission guy 400 dollars said he couldnt put back together it was a broken egg. Then paid 50 have towed to my house. Also 600 for tax title and tags 50 for inspection sticker. I have cried a river and am with no money no car and I have to get to work. It makes me so sad to know GM knew how greedy and just plain awful!

  • mary you got ripped off by who ever you bought it from,

they knowingly sold you a KNOWN bad suv,,, or they fixed/hacked it back together, you can buy used belts from ebay for 200, slapped it back together and shipped it out...

belt failure is only part of the issue with these transmissions, the other issue is the aluminum check balls, in the pulleys, these check balls hold the hydraulic pressure squeezing the belt, these check balls disintegrate, and then slip the belt and so on, just throwing a belt on these with out machining the pulleys and replacing the check balls with stainless steel, is a ticking time bomb...

Ether way it was a scam and the seller is responsible, i would call the police even though they might tell you there is nothing they can do... i would still try all your options. i have my VUE for sale on craigslist, 1500 with bad trans, but i clearly state in the ad, bad transmission, i would never want someone to buy something and feel they got ripped.

  • hello everyone:
In Canada, there is NO resolved class action against GM for Saturn and ION defective transmissions. I too am experiencing the exact same problems as all of you. Buying a 2003 VUE with a known, defective transmission and driving it for years without knowing. I put thousands of dollars into it for repairs, but never actually fixing what was wrong because mechanics and garages made tons of money on repairs and parts, labor NOT related to the transmission. Thousands of people had and continue to have the same thing happen to them. And you continue to drive your VUE or ION with a defective transmission until it completely fails.

GM in Canada dragged me around in circles for over 3 months, then told me they are not responsible, they didn't send me any notices about the defective transmission because I am the second owner and they didn't have my mailing address. That's a lie, I told them. They mailed me recall notices for other things in the years I had my VUE.

Car dealerships in Canada continue to sell used Saturn VUE's and ION's knowing full well that the transmissions are defective.

My VUE has a 2.2L transmission, so it costs close to $5,000.00 to replace. You cannot "rebuild" them. You cannot replace one part in this transmission, you have to replace the entire "transaxle" in the 2003 Saturn VUE, 4 cylinder, 2.2L.

Saturn/GM customer service and rep's only string you along, run you in circles, and try to get you to take your car to a GM dealership to have costly "inspections" to find other reasons or causes for your transmission failure. Then they refuse to replace it, refuse to pay any part of it.

I spoke to the USA law firm that is STILL IN court against GM for this issue. There are thousands of people still posting online, about this problem and these vehicles are still on the road in Canada and in the USA, still being sold by dealerships despite defective transmissions.

GM refuses to offer car owners a reasonable cost to replace your transmissions. We are at the mercy of greedy garages and mechanics. There are not that many new, warranty covered transmissions in Canada so the demand is high, there are still so many of us buying and continuing to drive these cars in Canada, totally unaware of the known, defective transmission issue until after our transmissions have failed and we are stuck without a car, and, GM giving us the run around and not helping at all.

I was told by the USA law firm, this morning, that in the USA, they have "Lemon Law" and that they are still in court with their 2008 Class Action against GM because when all the car owners got together and got a law firm to start the class action, GM declared bankruptcy in the USA. The lawyer stated they are aware people are still stuck with these cars and their transmissions are still failing to this day. Thousands of people have replaced the transmissions 2-4 times because the transmissions are defective.

In Canada, there is only one law firm trying to see if there is enough people in Canada that have a VUE or ION with the defective transmission, still driving and having problems, or, have had total transmission failure. There has to be VUE and ION owners filing complaints and joining up for a class action lawsuit in Canada. Don't waste your time or money trying to get any help from GM/Saturn in Canada.

They are not going to help you. People are still buying and driving these cars in Canada. People are still having their transmissions fail now, 2013-2014, long after GM got the class action lawsuit in the USA in 2008.

Like many of you, I had no idea there was a class action lawsuit in the USA back in 2008. I also had no clue that I was driving a car with a known, defective transmission. I too paid out thousands in repairs that had nothing to do with the transmission. I too am faced with over priced replacement options in Canada. I paid over $23,000.00 for my Saturn VUE. It was paid off last year. And, go figure, because I continued to drive it, with a defective transmission, it finally, totally failed.

The warranty had passed so it's of no use. And, its been paid off, after 6 years of car payments. So, I have no choice but to replace the transmission. Like many of you, I cannot afford to get back into 4-6 years of high priced vehicle financing. The crappy trade-in "deal" that GM is offering in Canada is bogus. They will give you around $5,000.00 trade in for your VUE or ION, because they "want them off the road", is of no use for the average, hard working or unemployed car owner.

After speaking with the lawyer from the GM Class Action lawsuit in the USA this morning, I found that this is the firm to sign up with in Canada. People in Canada continue to buy and drive VUE's and ION's with known defective transmissions. And many continue to have total transmission failure.

There is no cheap or reasonable fix. The replacement transmissions come from GM. They are far over priced. Is this their was of "getting these cars off the road" once and for all? Making it so expensive that car owners just tow their cars to scrap yards and be forced to purchase brand new vehicles? What about the people, who since 2008, have lost their jobs? Have no income anymore? Can't afford a new vehicle or their credit ahs been drastically changed since 2008. Thousands of people in Canada cannot buy new vehicles. Thousands of owners have paid their cars off and need a few years free and clear of car payments, some financial relief. Making car payments for 4-6 years, and finally free and clear, have a car paid off and no payments for a few years. But, then the warranty expires, your kilometers are higher, since 2008, and, it's paid off and now your transmission totally fails... Thousands of Saturn owners in Canada are in this exact position today and more continue to buy these cars.

Please go call and/or contact this law firm in Canada, if you are a GM/Saturn VUE or ION owner that is driving with a the defective transmission, or, have had total transmission failure... this is the only way we can get anywhere. It's not a guarantee, but it's more than what we are getting from GM in Canada today. We need to keep pushing this issue because GM continues to keep the replacement costs of these transmissions so high, it is financially destroying people.
