Team Sharesight, I understand the issues that may cause this to be a slow burner with IB and their API......however as my email is constantly peppered with +1's to this thread, the team need to find a suitable workaround in the interim.

At the very least can you not build a custom import based on the trade report that IB spits out? Or even more rudimentary, can you please create an Excel macro or something to convert the IB report into a Sharesight friendly format? Maybe even a web link I can submit the file to and have it modified and uploaded into my portfolio.

I just went through the process manually for about 10 trades, converting the IB output to the Sharesight template and it's a bloody headache and took me at least 20 minutes.

Let's get cracking with the MVP Lean Startup version of the solution, Team Sharesight!

    • Thanks Duncan,

As per my direct message, using the files you have provided I will see what we can do as a MVP integration.
    • I have been in this industry for over 25 years. IB data feed is the most difficult one that I have come across. If you know what you are doing then it will be simple plus your platform has to be designed to accomodate this feed?

In addition to my earlier post, is there any reason you couldn't use the flex web service that IB support?

It appears I could customise a flexi report in IB with the field structure setup as Sharesight requires.

Many thanks for responding to those assumptions.

The FTP option is problematic from a security perspective and unfortunately not really an option at scale.

  • Hi all,
Yahoo Finance now allows linking to US brokers such as Interactive Brokers. It doesn't allow linking to AU brokers such as CMC markets though.
Almost all of my portfolio is with IB, so it appears Yahoo Finance can fulfil my needs for free. If you use primarily AU brokers, Yahoo Finance isn't as useful.
Hope this helps at least one other person out there.

  • Francis,
May I ask what needs of yours are fulfilled by Yahoo Finance? I am also with IB.
    • I've only just found out about the linking. I've since realised Yahoo Finance doesn't appear to track dividends or other types of reporting, although I could be wrong. I'm actually still waiting for the IB data to sync with YF, it initially takes up to 2 business days.
It may be that YF simply makes it easier to import data into Sharesight, as I find the manual IB reports time-consuming to run and put into a format able to be read correctly by Sharesight. Exporting YF reports appear to be faster and simpler.
I'll have a play and update any info I found useful.

  • Hi All,

I'm well overdue to provide an update on our investigation into an IB integration.

In large part because of the feedback and suggestions provided on this topic and directly via our support address we have settled on an IB solution.

We eventually investigated around seven different approaches, but all had draw backs in one form or another.

The solution we will implement requires no direct customer support by us, nor does it require configuration on your part.

If you are interested in having your ongoing IB trade history automatically synced with Sharesight you would need to do the following:

    1. Send an email to a dedicated IB address (which I will provide when the feature is ready), include your account # and request the 'ShareSight feed'.

    2. Within 2-3 working days IB will provide you with dedicated user and password credentials specific to this integration.

    3. You will need to enter those credentials into a form we will develop in Sharesight.

    4. We will run a daily sync job that will retrieve your day's trading from IB using the credentials provided and process the trades into Sharesight.

This integration will require some fairly extensive development on our part. We will look to begin work once some pressing work relating to the end of the Australian tax year has been completed.

I will post another update when work is under way.

A big thanks to all those who have provided example files and suggestions.

    Regards

  • Thanks Ben, great news.

Any idea roughly of what the development time will be?
    • Once we start actual development I think things will progress fairly quickly. The delay really at this stage is just juggling those end of year tasks which we do need to prioritize.

Within a few weeks I should have a better idea as to when work can commence.

I will certainly post an update on this topic when I know.

    Hi Ben

Can you please consider the following when looking at the daily sync of data between Sharesight and IB with regards to 'Custom Investments' (ie a long Call Option position)

At the moment Sharesight offers a limited ability to track non-share positions but this requires two pieces of data to be manually added into Sharesight.

    1. The buy, sell, qty data of each trade
    2. Periodic manual updates to price to track the open P&L

Given this limitation I currently choose not to track the Option positions I have in my IB account in Sharesight

With the daily IB Sync I assume you be looking to bring all trade transactions into Sharesight including non-standard positions and assign them as a 'Custom Investments' (IB can provide the data required to populate what's required in Sharesight) - doing this would fix 1 above

For 2 Sharesight will still not have any pricing data for the Custom Investments but IB does - is it possible for the daily sync logic to also grab the daily close price of any
Custom Investments imported into Sharesight. Whilst the sync is checking for new open or closed positions grabbing the close price is hopefully relatively straight forward integration?

    Thanks
    Stuart
    • Hi Stuart,

At this stage we will import BUY and SELL transactions for the following Asset Types:
      Mutual Funds
      Structured Products
      Stocks (includes ADR, ETF)
      Warrants

That's not to say we can't look to map holdings in IB to custom investments in Sharesight, but we'd prefer to tackle that separately.

As to your second request, I have just taken another look at the data available and we can retrieve market prices from IB. To do so would involve some additional work on our part.

So both suggestions are certainly possible and we can explore these ideas further after our core integration is up and running.

      Regards

    Hi Ben,

Can you please provide an update on when this is expected to be available? As best I can tell, there's been no progress at all in the 4 months since a solution was decided on. The automatic import for trades is one of the top reasons I have continued to use ShareSight as it saves so much effort, but doesn't help with my US portfolio which I manage through IB. Manually entering trades is pretty clunky and takes a lot of the gloss off your product. Looking forward to this so I can finally give CommSec the flick.

    Cheers,
    Rob

    • Hello Ben, if you log into IB > go to investor market place > Search Services > Administration > Third Party Administrator. Sort by country, there aren't many there. It would be unprofessional for me to put the name here.
    • Hi All,

We hear your frustration at the lack of progress on this. We are frustrated too, as we genuinely hoped to have progressed this by now. As Ben noted in his update 4 months ago, we planned (and still do) to begin work on this following some work relating to the end of the Australian tax year. This includes work to support the AMIT tax regime and work with the registries to source accurate and complete tax breakdowns for ETFs. Other work that has naturally taken priority includes finishing off additional projects that are in progress (such as our cash accounts feature), and ongoing work to ensure that the security, performance and availability of Sharesight is to the high standard that you expect - this includes an extensive independent security audit and a substantial amount of work which will shortly be released to improve page load times. All of the above work has taken longer than expected, unfortunately that's the way it goes sometimes. We stand by our decision to prioritise this work above new features such as this, but that is certainly not to say that we don't recognise the value of an IB Integration and the customer demand for this. We will post here again when we have a further update available, in the meantime we fully expect you to evaluate the value of Sharesight based on its current feature set.

For those of you who are interested, the product that Ashok has previously linked to on this forum is UNIP. It would appear that Ashok is a co-founder of this business.
Ashok: if this is the case, it is not unprofessional for you to disclose this. In fact, given the nature of your extensive post history on this forum, I would personally consider it unprofessional if you had not done so already.

  • Hi All,

I'm pleased to announce the introduction of our Interactive Brokers integration.

This is very much in a beta phase.

For those of you who are interested in trying the feature out you can follow these steps to get started:

    1. Ensure that you have the Enable Beta Features flag set at the bottom of my details:
    https://portfolio.sharesight.com/user...

    2. Send an email to:
reportingintegration@interactivebroke..., include your IB account #, and request the ShareSight feed.

    3. You should receive back from Interactive Brokers a user name and password specific to this integration only.

    4. Access the new Interactive Brokers UI here:

    5. Then enter the credentials you have been given here:

I'd suggest setting notifications to 'On', at least to start with.

Once per day Interactive Brokers will send a file through to us that includes your days trading. We will upload these approx 9:15 pm AEST

Given the very limited access to real data we've had during development, we are expecting errors to occur once production accounts are hooked into the integration.

If you are happy to share any errors you receive on this topic so that others are aware of any issues that would be appreciated.

You can also message support@sharesight.com with specific details of any issues as they occur. We will look to tackle any issues as soon as possible.

    • Hi Ciwen,

The confusion has been cleared up between us and Interactive Brokers.

I see they have already started sending Sharesight customers ftp user names and passwords.

If you haven't already received these credentials yourself, you should do in the next day or so.
    • Hi Matt,

      I missed your questions above:

'Do you know if there's a way to upload all historical trades as a bulk upload as part of the integration? Or will this just pick up transactions going forward?

What happens in relation to cash account and FX conversions, do these get pushed through as well?'

At this stage we haven't tried to incorporate historical files as well. Our suggestion is to use IB's flexi queries to get your historical data into a format that matches our csv import structure. More about our csv import can be found here:
      https://help.sharesight.com/import_bu...

We haven't tried to push through cash account transactions, although I do believe these transactions are in the activity file which we receive from IB. We would need to do some work in this space to accommodate these transactions. I guess once the trades are importing smoothly we could look at these other transaction types.

Regarding FX conversions, in theory we will handle these. However we do need to get some actual data through to prove that point. I have a feeling we might need to do a little cleanup in this space, but we shall see.

Pure FX instruments will not work, although there is no reason we shouldn't be able to get these flowing through correctly as well.

    • Yes indeed Duncan, although I don't know to what extent any issues will reflect in your portfolio.

You will see a 'View Transactions Log' link on the first screenshot I posted. It's possible you will receive errors on this log for each short.

Either way, once we see the issues occurring we should be able to come up with a suitable solution quick enough

Will they show up as a new portfolio/group or look for the existing records we may have in our portfolios already?

I'm trying to understand how it works so that if there are errors that we can contain any damage to our existing setups.
    • The IB trades will be imported into whichever portfolio you configure the integration and at this stage they will look the same as any other trade.

However, you will be able to see all trades created via the IB integration in the 'View Transactions Log' screen from within that portfolio.

One option, at least until you are comfortable with the integration would be to add a new 'Test Portfolio' and create the integration against that test portfolio, assuming that you have capacity based on your plan to add an additional portfolio.

  • Hi All,

A fair number of you have already got yourselves established with ftp user name and password credentials and you should see this morning a few entries at least in your view transactions log accessed via the integrations tab in your portfolio.

Assuming that there might be a lag between IB giving you credentials and you inputting them into Sharesight, we look back 5 business days when trying to find a file to download from IB.

So you should see an attempt for Wed 10th, Thurs 11th, Friday 12th, Mon 15th and Tue 16th.

Depending on when the file was made available, it's likely you will only see a successful (green tick) for Monday 15th.

    So far, so good.

I am quite interested to know if anyone who got that far has actual trades that have been imported and what the state of those trades are? Particularly if they are non ASX trades.
    • view 4 more comments
    • Hi Ben, thanks for that. I received notification that my trades from 16th April (US stock market trading day, so 17th April AU/NZ time) were imported. One trade worked fine (on the NYSE), the other (on the NASDAQ) I got an error message "Market does not exist". Does it matter what exchange was used?
The backup option for "Click here to manually create this trade" is a good one; however this option doesn't give you the option to sell, only buy/opening holding. If you can add sell to this option, that'd be great.

  • You can batch import your IB trades into Sharesight fairly easily using the CSV export of the activity report from IB. So long as your Sharesight account is linked to a cash account, it will update it with the buy/sells.

The IB customer service staff did offer to provide a one off upload with historical trade data, but I'm not convinced the import tool is up to the task yet.

Ben, the exchange rate for trades in foreign currency is a separate section of the activity report so I'd imagine it will be hard for Sharesight to read that and map it to the individual buy/sell trades for equities.

Also it's not 1 for 1 in terms of AUD out and AUD in, after buying or selling shares. For example at the moment my account is $5k in the red in US currency, which I may or may not close to my 'primary currency' (AUD) at a time of my choosing. If I were to sell $20k in USD, it would sit as positive $15k in my USD cash account until I converted it manually back to AUD. Even though I can't directly trade forex in IB due to ASIC's forcing their hand, these equity trades aren't automatically exchanged and executed in AUD.
    • view 1 more comment
    • Actually best for the Sharesight guys to answer. I only assumed my cash account was updating correctly, but I haven't looked a great deal at whether that's the case.
    • Hi Royston,

Once you have selected a 'Trading cash account' for your portfolio any trades created in your portfolio with the trade date on or after the date you setup the trading cash account will automatically have a corresponding cash account transaction created.

You can also select the 'Manage Synced Trades' button on your trading cash account, choose a date from which you want to sync all trades and then select 'Sync all trades'.

If you have any further questions around this feature send a message through to support@sharesight.com and we can assist you directly.

  • Hi all, Just a quick update on this.

Following some initial teething issues, we've made a few tweaks to our file parsing and are now seeing most files importing correctly.

We'll be working on making our error messages and import logs a bit simpler and more understandable, but in the meantime here's some guidance on the common issues that we've been noticing:
    1. No data found / failed to download file errors. This indicates that no file was found for the date that we are looking for. This is not unexpected as we do not expect to receive files for days where there was no trading activity. Note that the date in question can be determined from the file name in the log message (eg U12345_Activity_20190425.csv.pgp)
    2. Market does not exist errors This could mean either that Sharesight does not yet support the market that you traded on or that we do not have a correct market code mapping for the IB market code. We'll be continuing to improve our market mappings during the beta period, but meanwhile if you notice this error and believe that the shares that you are trading are already supported in Sharesight, please drop us a note.
    3. Invalid username or password errors Note that you must obtain an FTP username and password by emailing reportingintegration@interactivebroke... per the instructions pinned to the top of this topic. This is not the same as your existing IB login, which will not work.

During the beta phase please note that you will need to manually record any trades that did not get imported correctly as it is not practical for us to re-run the import process on a individual basis.

Finally, a big thanks to everyone who has taken the time to provide feedback so far. We appreciate your patience and understanding!

  • Hi Scott & Ben, can you advise when the tweaks were made?

The import last night successfully imported a trade on ASX:TTT, however got the units wrong. Even though it was 1 trade, it tried to import 3 trades with different units (totalling the complete trade) however the last 2 failed (market does not exist). I suspect IB filled the order with 3 transactions?

I notice the 2 transactions that failed have the code 'TTT', while the 1 that imported successfully has 'TTT.AX'.

Also the prior days import failed with international stock purchases. I notice in the email file that there is no data after 'Name:' field and no market code connected with the instrument code. The trades were for MDB, BRK B, GH, SMAR. All of these are on either NASDAQ or NYSE.
    • Hi Duncan,
When an order fills in multiple parts we get several rows in the IB file which will import as separate trades into Sharesight at present. I have spotted an issue where some ASX trades part fill on Chi-X and we just need to map IB's CHIXAU market code to our ASX listings to correct this.

I have also identified a few US and Canadian market codes for sub markets that we are not mapping correctly. We will push through a fix to address this on Monday.

  • Hi All,

I thought I'd post a quick update before the weekend.

Today we released what we hope is some much improved marketing mapping logic. We are expecting a lot less, if any, 'market does not exist' errors in tonight's import.

We are continuing to work on amalgamating sub-lots into the single trades you would expect to see and should have something out early next week.

We are also currently working on the designs for a much improved transactions log which will make identifying issues with individual trades much easier.

Thanks to all those who have jumped in so far and helped get our very much beta integration working with real data.

  • Hi Ben

I sent an email to support@sharesight.com at '3 May 2019, 12:55' with regards to two trades that have not synced over from IB - are you able to provide an update on why they failed and how I get them to sync

    Cheers
    Stuart

  • Hi All,

We released an update yesterday to amalgamate sub-lots into single trades. We reviewed the imports from last night and the update appears to be working well.

We are continuing to work on an improved transactions log.

  • Hi All,

Last night, we implemented an update to ensure that regardless of which ftp site your files are available on, either ftp.interactivebrokers.com OR ftp3.interactivebrokers.com we will locate, download and process them.

Up until now, we have only been retrieving files from ftp.interactivebrokers.com

As a result of this change we saw an increase in the number of successful integrations processed last night.

We've noticed that a few account id's have been entered that do not start with 'U'.

If you are one of those who have entered a value starting with anything other than 'U' can you please send a message to support@sharesight.com, we'd like to know if these are valid entries.

A quick reminder that before you enter credentials into our new integrations tab for Interactive Brokers, you need to request access to the Sharesight feed from IB, who will provide you with a username and password to input. The credentials you need to enter into the Sharesight form are unique only to this integration. If you enter for example your IB login credentials, we will not be able to retrieve your trading history.
