Add Interactive Brokers

I would like to suggest that you add Interactive Brokers (Australia): https://www.interactivebrokers.com.au...

Team Sharesight, I understand the issues that may cause this to be a slow burner with IB and their API......however as my email is constantly peppered with +1's to this thread, the team need to find a suitable workaround in the interim.

At the very least can you not build a custom import based on the trade report that IB spits out? Or even more rudimentary, can you please create an Excel macro or something to convert the IB report into a Sharesight friendly format? Maybe even a web link I can submit the file to and have it modified and uploaded into my portfolio.

I just went through the process manually for about 10 trades, converting the IB output to the Sharesight template and it's a bloody headache and took me at least 20 minutes.

Let's get cracking with the MVP Lean Startup version of the solution, Team Sharesight!

    • Hi Ben, I've sent you both the standard trade statement and a flexi query (that I setup).

I think the existing flexi query works best for Sharesight based on my understanding of your import functionality. It can be setup to be automatically sent on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

The two challenges I see are:

      1) How you treat equities purchased internationally re exchange rate. (I suggest if you can't handle separate line items for forex, you should use the default rate of the day as suggested on trade entries)

      2) How you receive the file - i.e. can IB add a second email address for delivery or can you directly pull the file from the FTP service.
    • Thanks Duncan,

As per my direct message, using the files you have provided I will see what we can do as a MVP integration.

In addition to my earlier post, is there any reason you couldn't use the flex web service that IB support?

It appears I could customise a flexi report in IB with the field structure setup as Sharesight requires.

  • Hello IB Users, Its not easy and as IB doesn't provide contract notes it is difficult, unless you know what you are doing and others have achieved this with ease.

  • Hi Ben

Any update on the Flexi query import as I've seen other portfolio apps use these to get trade data out of IB

    Regards

    • There should probably be a 5th assumption - On an individual user basis IB can enable FTP upload of the daily report, instead of by email.

I can see the FTP option in my report settings area, but I cannot manually enable it. I'm also not sure if Sharesight could use one central FTP server with multiple daily reports getting uploaded that can be user attributable or whether Sharesight would have to create unique folders (linked to Sharesight user ID) for each individual Sharesight user.

      Re your 1-4 assumptions:
      1) Correct. Only 'All Activity Report' can be sent as CSV. not 'Trade Report'. Activity report also includes trades.

      2) I believe the daily email is sent regardless of whether trades are made or not.

      3) Correct.

      4) Correct.
    • Hi Duncan,

Many thanks for responding to those assumptions.

The FTP option is problematic from a security perspective and unfortunately not really an option at scale.

  • Hi all,
Yahoo Finance now allows linking to US brokers such as Interactive Brokers. It doesn't allow linking to AU brokers such as CMC markets though.
Almost all of my portfolio is with IB, so it appears Yahoo Finance can fulfil my needs for free. If you use primarily AU brokers, Yahoo Finance isn't as useful.
Hope this helps at least one other person out there.

  • Francis,
May I ask what needs of yours are fulfilled by Yahoo Finance? I am also with IB.
    • I've only just found out about the linking. I've since realised Yahoo Finance doesn't appear to track dividends or other types of reporting, although I could be wrong. I'm actually still waiting for the IB data to sync with YF, it initially takes up to 2 business days.
It may be that YF simply makes it easier to import data into Sharesight, as I find the manual IB reports time-consuming to run and put into a format able to be read correctly by Sharesight. Exporting YF reports appear to be faster and simpler.
I'll have a play and update any info I found useful.
