ipad 2 or latest model with retina screen

Hi there, I'm about to buy a new ipad, mainly for my son who has Down's Syndrome to support speech therapy and I'm debating on whether to splash out on the latest model with retina screen and faster A6 chip or ipad 2. What do you think? We'll probably need to buy a kid proof protector like the griffin defender and I'm guessing the benefits of the high res screen may be lost. This is a BIG purchase for us so I really want to make the right choice, any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It is a tough decision. Budget concerns aside. I'm seeing apple drop software support for older ipads way too quickly. The ipad 1 is not getting updated to ios 6 after only two years. For longer device life and usefulness I'd get the new Retina one if you can. Hope this helps.

@ Jeremy - thanks for the feedback. Yes when ios upgrades come in to the equation it makes sense to go for the latest version.

Louise, Have you considered the iPad Mini? Or is the screen size not large enough for him to be able to use properly? It is so much lighter in weight than the iPad which may be a plus for him. Lisa M

@ Lisa, I certainly have considered the mini for him. There are definite advantages to the lightness and portability of it. However rumors suggest that a new model with retina will be out in March '13 and I have to say I'd feel hard done by for spending such a large amount of money to see my purchase outmoded so quickly. On that basis I think we're better off hanging in there and getting an ipad 4.
