  • Hi Alexander,

We're currently thinking about integrating with Mozilla Open Badges but haven't decided on a firm direction yet. Could you tell us how you found out about Mozilla Open Badges and how you would use Smarterer badges there?

Thanks for your interest and thanks in advance for the extra detail!

Learned about Mozilla through their grant program - a local community partner got one of their competition awards. I think McArthur Foundation was involved, too, NASA, NOAA, http://www.dmlcompetition.net/Competi...
Your badges are great, but their infrastructure promises to other organizations to issue badges, and have them displayed in a digital backpack. It is sort of like your sharing options, but people can match different kinds of badges. I think it would be in your interest to at least investigate. There is no way you will have a monopoly on badging, because some are not test-driven. Even with tests, others are in the game. You have a cool crowd-sourcing model, but ETS have millions of dollars - they will probably start looking into presenting their test scores as badges.

We want to work on mixing/supplementing badges of different kind with traditional college courses. So, we would send them to you for test-based badges, but also need to issue some from our end and on our authority. We need to have one place for each student to collect them. For example, when a student fulfills his or her community-service requirement, we'd like to give them a badge as a way of tracking compliance. We also want to reward those who went beyond and above - recognize for student activities, leadership, etc. IN other words, your badges need better mobility.

I don't care if it is Mozilla - whoever comes up with a way to collect validated badges from different sources - we will use. They seem to be leading this effort at the moment.

Here's an example of a Mozilla Backpack with badges:

It would be helpful if your badges could be uploaded to Credly, Mozilla Backpack, or Basno. Something that I can post to my profile and consolidate - so I don't have to list three websites to accomplish the same thing in different angles
