I'm not smart any more and can't increase my score

Okay so I achieve 'Smart' level for a test. After a couple of days my score drops below 500 and I am no longer smart. However there are no more questions for me to answer. I make up a couple of questions to try to restore my score. My score stays below 500 until? Do I have to wait for people to get my question wrong to regain points? In the mean time everyone can see that I am not 'Smart'
What happens when the ecosystem matures? Who is going to want to make more questions every few days for every test to maintain all of their scores? Obsessives perhaps but the average punter?
I would suggest that scores should only decrease when a new version of the software (eg Excel) is released.
Or maybe th ehighest mark obtained for a skill should be preserved

    Hi Jason,

We're still doing a lot of work in this area.

It is intentional for scores to slowly degrade over time; We don't want users to be able to get a perfect score once, and then hold it forever by not answering any more questions. But we are considering some options about the rate (for example, having it degrade more slowly for users who have answered more questions and/or run out out of available ones.)

We're also very busy working on some new ways to get points... This includes activities like adding new questions, flagging and fixing problems, and otherwise helping to moderate the user-submitted content of the site. While the moderation tools are still in their infancy, our ultimate goal is to turn the various problems (limited supply of questions, bad content) into opportunities for more points.

How about if the score only degrades over time as new questions are added and not answered?

What's even more frustrating is when I achieved a master level in a subject, and then get a couple questions "wrong" (and sometimes I disagree with the answer the author listed as correct, because there may be multiple "correct" answers). I've dropped down from master all the way to proficient after just a couple wrong answers. Then there are not enough questions left to get back up even to the upper level of expert.

I really like Smarterer, but I totally agree the way that it works with the scoring and the scoring dropping over time (even though there is no more questions) is really daft.

I think there should be better ways to convince us to return and you should not take away from our scores, especially if there isn't any questions in that area or even enough points to even get back the score we were at - honestly, you will loose your users. Personally, having see my scores in various subjects... I am disgusted because I am master in most of them and the questions asked are either poor or not enough time has been given to answer OR you are not awarded enough points, etc.

I wanted to say something about this particular topic and came across this page and quite frankly, if you will take my points away... I really do not want to use your service. I mean, we have lives and cannot be expected to come to the site every single day... there really needs to be something to pull us in each day!

For instance, do you have an iOS/Droid app? Are there other ways we can prove our capability in the subject areas (such as getting points for reviewing questions - if not done already, having high points in a similar field could earn points faster, etc)? What about having a 1-3 month period where if the user hasn't logged in, you email us and ask us to create questions (a set amount perhaps) for our high ranking subject areas and if we don't our score will drop a little?

There are tons of things you can do and I do really like this service but I am tempted not to return if my score decreases because, to me, I would like to point people to my page and show them what I am capable of (even though it isn't a true reflection because of the quality, time given and points given - but this area needs some of you attention as well).

    Sorry, some more things...

I feel I've worked hard and instead of my score decreasing, what about making it harder to get to the levels OR even make new levels (not sure where you can go with the levels).

Seriously, I've spent alot of time on my tests and I want to be able to point people to my page but if my score decreases, I won't want to do that!

Sorry for the long messages but I was so excited when I found you service and now I feel I have wasted hours of my time for nothing (if my score will decrease, etc).

  • Hi Dannii,

Thank you very much for your feedback and we're sorry for your frustration, we're still doing a lot of work to make improvements and add new features to Smarterer. I hope I can address some of your concerns. In terms of your scores on tests, they will only degrade slightly over time, not daily. We implemented this feature because we do not want our users to take a test, get a very high score, and then hold it while the test grows and adapts (for example, maybe there's a new version of the software that is different or a new feature that changes the product). We want to encourage users to answer questions when they want to while not having the tests become a source of stress.

We're also sorry that you were disappointed with the quality of some questions. We hope that as users continue to add new questions and flag/comment on bad ones, the tests will grow and improve in quality to become an accurate reflection of the skill being tested. Were there any specific tests that you have in mind as being low quality? If so, please let us know so we can focus our cleanup efforts there. Also, feel free to add questions of your own to our tests - we really appreciate user input! With your help, we can make improvements to the tests (and you'll get an author bonus to your score for good questions too!).

I hope this helped and thanks again for your feedback, it really helps us in our efforts to make Smarterer better!

    - Derek

I went to apply for a job and was directed here. I've been out of work a while and thought, "Great, I need to test my skills anyway." However, I am much better in some areas, and quite honestly, much worse in others than are reflected in the tests. I actually tested pretty well, but I would like to improve my score in one area particularly, and I don't seem to be able to re-take the test or answer more questions. Surely, once you've learned from your mistakes you should be able to reflect that in your scores. Please fix this. Also, I can think of at least two questions where I indicated an answer that was correct and acceptable, but it was marked wrong because it _could_ be done another way or _all_ of the answers were correct. If you learned how to do something one way, why should you be marked wrong if there are more than one way to do something and you only learned one way to do it; that doesn't mean you did it incorrectly! Also, I am only now reading that my scores will decrease over time. This doesn't seem right; if you want people to come back and take the tests because new questions are available (or software has been upgraded), why not send users an invite--but don't punish us.

  • Absolutely hate it that you're dropping scores over time.

It is to sad to answer questions correct - and still get a dropdown in the points. What's the fun part in that?!?!?

Perhaps you could allow old scores to stand without dropping them, but add a caveat onto them that mentions the date the highest ranking was achieved. Also, I don't know how it works to allow second chances at some questions as people do learn over time and should, imo, be allowed to be counted as "smart" for having learned from their original mistakes.

  • I’m annoyed by achieving expert then dropping back into proficient and now I have no more test questions!
I agree with second chances... I did a test, learn't something I didn't know from the test and now I use it every day... So even though I got it wrong in my first try, I would get it correct now.

    Second chance tests.

I think you should be allowed to retake tests filled with the questions you got wrong, to be able to prove that you do learn from your mistakes. Maybe add a 'Tests retaken' section so people can see that you got it wrong initially but then you were smart enough to learn what you did wrong.
