Help me VISUALIZE my money.

I think one of the coolest things about SmartyPig is that it makes saving, fun. There are many reasons why SmartyPig is more fun than other banks, but I think that one of the main reasons is the unique is the design of the site itself. It's a pleasure on the eyes, featuring a simple minimalist design. However, I feel a bit frustrated by the lack of ability to visualize my money and individual goals.

Something that would make SmartyPig a lot more appealing to me at least would be outstanding graphical representation of accounts, including history, growth potential, balances, etc. I want to be able to SEE my money... where it has been, where it is, and where it is going... not just numbers, but rich graphs and analysis that allow me to gather a lot of information, quickly.

One of the things that makes finance so intimidating to people is the lack of good visual mediums for absorbing data. I would suggest making graphical representation of the data on this site would be a good thing to put at the top of the priority list to help grow the consumer base. It would set the product apart from other stodgy banks, and help maintain/grow SmartyPig's unique brand.

I could make a list of some of the most important graphs to include, and features of those graphs that would make them more relevant... but I don't want to write a novel here. This is just a brainstorming site anyway.

@fivepoint,

As always, excellent comments and suggestions from you. Question for you. We have OFX integration plans soon, so SmartyPig can integrate with Mint, Wesabe and Yodlee. All of which do exceptional jobs in visualizing your money (some better than others). Let me know how that might impact your wish list (if at all). We'd love to hear from you, and anyone else, on this issue.

Thanks!

@fivepoint,

Thanks to your input and others we have launched a new section to a user's account called "Visualizer". We are looking forward to enhancing this area of the site with additional features. For more info, please visit our blog post at:

I'm using mint and asked for the same feature but i think Smartypig would be able to implement something tailored to the spin the site has on saving. I'm looking for something like a pie chart that shows all your savings and what percentages are allocated to which goals. Visually seeing where your money is stored would really help me out. Thanks for a wonderful product!

@Chicknfood,

Thanks for the suggestion. I think something like this would be a good addition to our Visualizer section of the site. We will definitely consider this!

Thanks again!

Also something I would like to see (as an extension to this) is the projected growth (in $ and %) based on the current automatic contributions and interest levels.

One more thing, I would like to see in the dashboard the following numbers:
1a) The $# already deposited this month (broken to automatic and manual)
1b) The same as #1a for last month
2a) The total automatic $# scheduled for this month (including already deposited $)
2b) The same number as #2a.

I always have to sum #2a and #2b myself to figure out if I have enough $ in my checking.

Thanks for listening!

Heck. For now, I'd just be pleased if the visualizer didn't overstate the balance of a particular goal by the amount that was transferred to other goals.

@WorkingDaddy,

Completely agree. We will be working to get this corrected. Thanks, John

I closed an 8k goal "Savings" and sent all the money to another goal "Property".... and since then my visualizer is worthless to me... Why on earth would you make it so my total shows 8k less than I have? The visualizer for "Property" does not show me the amount I have there, but shows 8k less.

Why not have the visualizer actually reflect the true amount in your acct and in a given goal? So you can "visualize" what's truly in your goals and in your acct?

I wouldn't bother to write, but this is messing with my motivation to save. Seeing that graph go up was an enormous motivator for me, and what got me to start saving in the first place.

Thanks
