Add Apple keyboard media key support to core

  • Question
  • Updated 2 years ago
Please add Apple keyboard media key support. It is essential functionality for a good user experience on any system, including the Mac.

It exists as an add-on but it is outdated and likely to remain so for long periods after each version release. http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...

Please consider adding the functionality to Songbird core.

This is indeed a crucial functionality that must be added. It is the only thing that prevents me from using SB

The lack of media key support has prompted me to revert to an earlier version of songbird.

I definitely agree, I waited as long as I could for an update before I reverted back to an old version of SB. Media Key support makes it just that much more niftier.

Agreed. And it's frustrating that the people in charge (mainly Nick Kreeger) don't respond to questions/suggestions at all. Although he might be a busy man, this is somehow ignorant.

This is definitely frustrating. It seems all too typical that “core functionality” (the now playing list is another example), should get relegated to add-ons, which are then naturally prone to becoming out-dated.

I certainly don't mean to bash on add-on authors. The double edge sword of user contributed add-on/plugins is that they can add great features and can become abandoned or are of poor quality.

But the parent app authors should, from time to time, look for things that are in plugins which really belong in core.

It's unacceptable for a media player not to have global hotkey support. It's simply unusable. All the hard work put into all the other features goes to drain because people won't use it because of a silly little feature.

At least make the command line parameters work and we'll take care of the global shortcuts.

Totally agree re. unacceptability of global hotkey support. It is such BASIC functionality of modern players.

I love the bells and whistles of songbird, but what's the point if I can't use it? Until songbird can be controled via applekeys, SONGBIRD HAS NO MAC VERSION.

Yeah gotta have it, should be core on the mac build. I think Apple remote addon should be core as well. In the meantime I'm watching doubleTwist to see if they will add media key/remote support anytime soon :/

A media player without keyboard controls is only marginally more useful than a media player that doesn't play media.

When i'm listening to my music on my Mac, I have to go over to the program and pause it, if I click the play button on my keyboard, it opens up iTunes. The thing that gets me is that there is an add-on, but it does not work with the latest version... Why is it even available then?! Please get this into the newer versions soon

Waiting for this to release too. Just downloaded songbird and this makes it a bit of a PITA. I will continue to use though because I dislike iTunes so very much.

Well, going back to iTunes, or even trying VLC. This seemed like a no brainer to me... and honestly, the only non-hideous songbird themes are all no longer supported.

I can't handle iTunes lack of support for ogg. I know there is a QTPlugin for it, but iTunes doesn't respect the tag data properly. And it still doesn't even have a proper folder watch option!

This would be a most welcome addition - this one seriously keeps me away from Songbird - otherwise it looks a very promising and interesting music player.

If it is not possible to add this, I would also thank the developers for all the effort they put in.

I just downgraded from 1.8 to 1.4 again after finding out that the multimedia keys are STILL not supported in the core. I don't care for all the fancy stuff - this is BASIC functionality. Not giving up on Songbird yet for lack of nice alternatives, but please...

I've been a songbird user since it's first release, because I loathe iTunes and love the fact that I can browse and listen to music in one place. However, not being able to control my music simply makes it useless. I'm a coder so the second that I have to take my hands from the keyboard to use my mouse, I'm wasting time. I understand that things take time, but this hasn't worked since 1.4. We're at 1.8. Either drop OSX as a userbase and lose out on that or support it. If it's the former, that's fine, but then at least we all know where we stand in the grander scheme of things, rather than just wondering whether or not we'll be able to use the software as intended.

Why are they so silent on this? Why is it so hard for them to see how useful it is for their users?
