Add Apple keyboard media key support to core

  • Question
  • Updated 2 years ago
Please add Apple keyboard media key support. It is essential functionality for a good user experience on any system, including the Mac.

It exists as an add-on but it is outdated and likely to remain so for long periods after each version release. http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...

Please consider adding the functionality to Songbird core.

I think it's a matter of this issue not reaching the threshold of responses to make it on to the front page and catch the developers eye. Get anyone and everyone who might be effected by this to respond. But let's try and keep it constructive and respectful.

Songbird is close to fully replacing iTunes, bar iPhone syncing. Let's give them a push along.

Well said,I agree with your wise post Adam... constructive comments are more likely to help. Let's help the developers help us...

Wasn't really directed at any one person. I understand the frustration. Just trying to get this over the line without the devs hating us :)

A tip that'll save u like half a second it's right click in the dock icon and select Pause/Play from there... anyway the thing that bothers me about this it's that it should be really, really easy to implement to the songbird team...

Yeah, this is such a wonderfully useful feature, it would be great if updating Songbird didn't carry the risk of loosing this functionality.

Ugh. I left Songbird during 1.4 for memory-leak problems, but got excited when I hit the site today to see that it progressed 0.4 in version numbers while I was using iTunes. Downloaded and installed, uninstalled within five minutes for this reason. I am damn near speechless.

How did you experience the effects of a memory leak in 5 minutes? ... Also this page is about adding support for apple keyboard media keys to Songbird core :)

Memory leaks were "during 1.4."

I probably should've worded it so that "for this reason" was more obviously for the page's topic, sorry.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood you, thought you meant uninstalled 1.8 because of memory leaks!

I want this too. Switching between apps just for pause/skipping song or changing volume is waisted time.

I think that Songbird without this function is NOT usable as other apps (iTunes, VLC...) and that it's loosing a lot of Mac users.

I had to revert back to iTunes / VLC while I find to a suitable replacement

I agree with everyone else's sentiment that the lack of this feature is a deal breaker. Recently switching from Windows to Mac I was hoping to find a media player of a similar caliber that Winamp is to Windows. Songbird offers hope but likewise as a developer/power-user I find it unacceptable from a usability perspective that I would actually have to switch applications and control playback directly from the app, or even the dock.

I don't get the point of all this. I mean I considered songbird as my music player when switching over to mac recently but ditched it because of missing global hotkey support.

When I realised that there isn't any player i could stomach that has global hotkeys on MacOS I just wrote a program myself. If any of you really care about it stop whining and start coding.

The source of the player and the plugin is available and if you want to know how to catch the key codes just look into my app

Threatening to leave the player is childish and most unlikely to catch the developers attention.

If you need any help with the key code part, ask.

Heh, I suspect that many people who use Songbird aren't computer programmers! Hopefully someone who knows will pick up your code and update the Songbird addon. By the way.. since you ditched Songbird because it doesn't have media key support.. and you know how to code media support.. maybe you could update the addon?? :P

I am not a programmer either by any stretch of the word. I know a programming language or two but i suck at it. I had to learn objective C just to get this working and it was a matter of days. That's not a good excuse. It just shows that the issue can't be that important.

I should have said "originally ditched". My media setup is rather involved now and songbird is plain incapable of doing what I'm doing now I think. So, sorry not really interested. I just had a look into the plugin and the author did the same as me, so I guess I am unneccessary.

Don't get me wrong I think global hotkeys are a fundamental requirement for a media player, but then thinking again that is actually a MacOS Bug. I think it's just ridiculous how restricted MacOS keybindings settings are. (Media Keys are just the tip of the iceberg, try binding to the volume keys or changing the metakeys around! )

I think you should drop this plea and file a complaint with apple. Tell them they need to implement this soon or you will give away your Mac :P

As soon as someone gets this fixed: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/... then it will be trivial. I am giving up, I only used it binarily before and although i got it to build I've decided to drop the whole thing. The whole concept of basing a media player on xulrunner and shipping all of the dependencies is fubar and their build process is just mind boggling.

Long historical thread but hopefully a satisfied conclusion.

Wanted to let you know that we do plan on adding this capability to Songbird via an add-on as a default installation feature.

Unfortunately as many of you have called out because of Apple's changes to their OS where the play/pause (F8) key is hardwired to iTunes, we are currently unable to work around there. If Apple re-opens this API again to third party applications, we can make the necessary accommodations.

Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming!

Best,
Eric

VLC does it quite well... it handles it without conflicting with itunes. Perhaps you could find some inspiration there?

Thanks!
