G'day,

Apple has added protection to the new iPod's which make it difficult, hackish and actually potentially DMCA violating to support them. Furthermore, as what is happening with the Palm Pre, Apple might start playing cat and mouse, and break the protocol occassionally. Because Apple purposely is trying to make it impossible for other companies to support their ipod's, Songbird is instead doing the logical thing and trying to support almost every other player instead (which can be done with MSC/MTP)! In fact, Songbird seems to be working with major hardware manufacturers discreetly and I suspect official announcements will be made soon.

So at this time, Songbird only supports the older ipods and there is no timeframe on supporting the new ones. Whilst POTI have open sourced the iPod plugin, the community have unfortunately shown little interest in using it (probably because most community developers are shifting to android devices and other devices).

I hate to say it, but iTunes (or iTunes 2 way sync) is probably your only reliable solution at this time, and will continue to be so in the future, especially since other media players slowly seem to be deprioritising iPod's too. Apple lock down the players because they generate primary profit off the ipod, however, by locking iPod's into iTunes, secondary profit is generated by the iTunes music store (which iPod users are inclined to use).

It sucks, but its reality. Pouring above-average resources into providing average/below-average iPod support is a poor long term strategy, one which would ultimately prevent Songbird from overtaking iTunes in all areas. In fact, since deprioritising iPod support, Songbird's progress seems to have dramatically improved (Songbird 1.4 is a HUGE step forward), so I think it is an effective strategy and its showing.

Its not to say it wont be supported in the future, but I think its better for Songbird to do what they can do well, and when there is more time available, focus on things such as this (which drain resources heavily, but will possibly always be problematic).

This isn't the word of POTI though (I'm only a random community person), so this opinion isn't an official endorsed Songbird one ;)

Despite install the iPod support plugin and obviously plugging in my iPod songbird isn't detecting the iPod at all. I got a new 120gb iPod, newer models may not work with Songbird or something but it's not showing up at all for me.

Hi there

I am trying to use my new 2GB iPod shuffle on ubuntu with songbird. The model no. for the suffle is A1271. I think it's a fourth gen, the rectangular one.

Everything seems to go fine with syncing some music and stuff, but when I eject my shuffle and try to listen to the music I just uploaded, I am greeted with a message telling me to use iTunes to sync music to this iPod.
I have tried several things to get it to work, but to no avail...

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

When I do a transfer of music to my 4th generation iPod Photo it appears to transfer fine but when it's finished there are a couple of problems:
1.) When I right click on the iPod icon and click eject the "Do not disconnect" display on the iPod does not disappear. I can't get it to disappear at all at go to the menu. Using Windows to Safely Remove Hardware doesn't fix it either - I therefore have to unplug it with the warning message still showing.

2.) Having done the above, the ipod reboots and shows no songs or playlists at all. if I plug it back in and open songbird, songbird says it's all fine (60GB used, all the songs and playlists are there) (but it's obviously not)

This worked fine in Winamp 5

My Info:
Songbird 1.0.0, Build 860 (20081124135419)
iPod Device Support 3.0.10.860
Windows Vista Home Premium x64

i was haveing something like that happen to mine also, what I did was connect the ipod back into itunes running in windows and restored it, then it would work with songbird-the downside is that everytime you connect it to your songbird library you will have to erase and sync it everytime you want to add more stuff

Since lots of iPods aren't working now, the solution I've found is to install Rockbox on your iPod, effectively making it a mass storage device, and then you can sync it that way. Works like a charm!

There shouldn't be an issue mapping to non-top level urls. Which domain registrar are you using?
