I’m frustrated

Songbird fails to start on some Linux systems due to gstreamer-python

On 32-bit Fedora 11, I get the following, running Songbird 1.2:
./songbird

(songbird-bin:2782): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstdeinterlace.so': /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstdeinterlace.so: undefined symbol: gst_video_format_parse_caps_interlaced
././songbird-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/gst-0.10/gst/_gst.so: undefined symbol: gst_xml_get_type
Could not initialize GStreamer: Error re-scanning registry , child terminated by signal

I'd seen some references to removing libvisual-plugins; this package is not installed on my system. Prior Songbird versions worked great; I upgraded to 1.2 today, and immediately experienced the problem. The Fedora gstreamer-plugins package was updated on 6/16; I'm guessing there's an incompatibiliy between the Fedora update and Songbird. Here's the Fedora package info:
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.15-1.fc11.i586
Songbird worked after this upgrade, until the update to 1.2 just a bit ago..

gstreamer-python was updated yesterday. Songbird functioned after this update as well. Package info on gstreamer-python:

OK, I rolled Songbird back to 1.1.2, and the previously mentioned afflictions are gone.

While it's great to hear music again, I'll follow this bug until there is a resolution.

• Hey Ken,

If you remove the gstreamer-python package, are you able to start Songbird with 1.2?

If so, I filled a bug to track that problem.

To track the comments on this work item:

1. Go to the "people" box in the upper right hand corner of bug # 17082;

2. Add your email in the "add cc" box;

3. Scroll down and hit commit.

If you don't have a free bugzilla account, signing up is quick and easy and will allow you to share your feedback directly with the development team.

Keep in mind, since the SB team has limited resources and only tests on Ubuntu currently, there might be little traction for a fix soon.

• I had the same problem after I upgraded packages using yum
update. I resolved it by downgrading the gstreamer-plugins-good
and gstreamer-python rpm packeges. What I did was I removed them
from my fedra11 box and installed the following packages obtained
from http://rpm.pbone.net. Now the songbird is working fine.

gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.14-2.fc11.i586.rpm
gstreamer-python-0.10.14-2.fc11.i586.rpm

I have this problem too on Fedora 11. Erasing the gstreamer-python-0.10.16-1.fc11.i586 package fixed the problem.

For those of you having this problem: you should be able to keep gstreamer-python installed, but start songbird like this (from a terminal):

export LD_BIND_NOW=1
./songbird

Can you let me know if this helps?

@Mike: I just tested this and it worked for me as well. Do you know if this issue will be fixed in 1.4?

For everyone else, you can create a simple shell script to handle launching Songbird if you'd rather not have to open the Terminal every time, or if you just want to reduce the amount of typing you have to do. It's fairly straightforward - open a new Terminal window and type this in:

sudo touch /usr/bin/songbird_script
sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/songbird_script
gksudo gedit /usr/bin/songbird_script

Each line is a separate command, so hit enter after each one. Then copy and paste this into the new text file that opens:

#!/bin/sh
export LD_BIND_NOW=1
cd /usr/share/Songbird
./songbird

If you have Songbird installed somewhere besides /usr/share/Songbird then you'll have to change the path. Save the file as "songbird_script" and close the window. If you already have a launcher set up for Songbird, all you have to do is edit it and change the command from "songbird" to "songbird_script". Otherwise you'll have to create one or launch Songbird from the Terminal (just type in "songbird_script" without the quotes and hit enter).

Thanks for that. It's an elegant way to run the workaround.

For my general education can someone explain what this environment variable is doing and why it removes the issue?

Thanks again.

Wes: I don't think we'll be able to get it fixed in 1.4. It's actually a bug in gst-python, not in songbird - it's possible to work around, but I don't think we'll have time to get a proper workaround in place.

Justin: gst-python loads some shared libraries with the RTLD_LAZY flag. It shouldn't be doing that. This environment variable overrides that to make the dynamic linker ignore RTLD_LAZY.

I'm not sure it's the same issue, but I just upgraded to Karmic Koala and ran into a similar issue. The export LD_BIND_NOW=1 fix worked, just reporting it in case it helps somehow.

• Heres my issue with the entire way Ubuntu works. Its not an official build, and how do you know you can trust Fabien Tassin?

I'm only mentioning this because I am concerned by the number of linux users who are grabbing random packages off the internet for everything... Packages which may have been modified with dodgy patches.

People call windows users silly, for doing stuff like running exe's from their emails, but almost every linux user goes to google and grabs packages from there (which is actually worse). Be aware that its easier to make an infected package on linux then on windows!!! So please be safe..
• I'm not sure I follow you here, yes sometimes people do install packages directly that they have downloaded from the internet, but that isn't "the entire way Ubuntu works" as you say, it is an OPTION that you are strongly advised not to take unless you know what you are doing, but sometimes it is the easiest way to work around a problem you may have. In this case, I think it would be wise to find out more about the source of the suggested package before installing it (Actually I'd say don't do it, it's not the official songbird nightly build...), and I'm personally planning on using the "export LD_BIND_NOW=1" workaround until Ubuntu or Songbird's official packages catch up, but that doesn't reflect on the way Ubuntu is set up. In fact I use Debian at work, and we have custom archives of Debian packages we use for production which are integrated into a custom installer product, so we very much NEED the option of installing anonymous packages in addition to the normal package repository model (we sign them ourselves with a wrapper package for distribution).

Also I'm not sure about "almost every linux user" downloading annonymous packages from the internet, you might see more of that if you spend a lot of time on support forums, but I definitely warn people that I help about making sure they are getting software from a trusted source, and I tend to be very careful about where I get packages from.

Finally, I'm very dubious about your claim that it's easier to make an infected package on linux than on windows, either approach will require either pretty good programming knowledge or possession of and ability to use a pre-made kit of some kind that generates tainted installers. While it's true that on either platform once you've convinced a user to install a program (whether via anonymous executable or anonymous package) you've basically "won" already, I estimate that the difficulty of creating an infected package is similar on both platforms and that tools for doing so are more readily available for windows (due to there being more targets if nothing else).

Anyway, this is mostly moot, I agree with your general intent, which I take to be, "don't install packages that you don't know the source of". If you want to install the daily songbird build, go to the official songbird page and find it there instead of using a link someone you don't know posted. (I'm not sure who maintains that repository, but I don't think it's the official songbird build...)

I had this problem too, on Fedora 11. It turns out that Songbird is shipping with a version of gstreamer that is conflicting with the one already installed with Fedora and Ubuntu. Remove all files from the Songbird/lib directory that start with libgst:

libgstaudio-0.10.so
libgstinterfaces-0.10.so
libgstrtp-0.10.so
libgstbase-0.10.so
libgstnet-0.10.so
libgstrtsp-0.10.so
libgstcdda-0.10.so
libgstnetbuffer-0.10.so
libgstsdp-0.10.so
libgstcontroller-0.10.so
libgstpbutils-0.10.so
libgsttag-0.10.so
libgstdataprotocol-0.10.so
libgstreamer-0.10.so
libgstvideo-0.10.so
libgstfft-0.10.so
libgstriff-0.10.so

Removing the gstreamer files that come with the Songbird package fixed me right up. Source:

• Thank you very much!
• Works on my Ubuntu 9.10 machine, I can now remove the LD_BIND_NOW=1

What intrigues me here is (I'm not attacking anybody here):
1. why the Songbird team didn't suggest to try this
2. since it's apparently not safe to assume that all Linux users have these gst libs, isn't it possible to add a check saying "if system gst libs are present, use them, else use the ones in SongbirdFolder/lib"

Anyway, thanks for the tip and the link to the blog post. As one commenter says there, let's hope this problem "starts the necessary chatter".

Hello. I'm an Ubuntu 9.10 User, and using Songbird now for some time already. During the last time, I got some problems with SongBird, it showed some Titles as dublicate, etc, even though there is only one File in the Source Folder. So I deleted the Songbird Folder and the .2songbird Folder too, and wanted to re"install" it. Now, here's the problem: Every time I run the songbird.sh, I get Error Codes, and nothing starts up. I'm using the Linux i686 32-bit Packages, btw. The Outputs:

• G'day,

Whilst I have never seen it suggested before, or seen it tested, you could also try to set Songbird to only use the System Gstreamer plugins. This is done by typing:
export SB_GST_SYSTEM=1; ./Songbird

No idea if it works, just thought of it then. Songbird wiki has a list of other Environment Variables available.

Let me know if it helps

• G'day,

I actually spoke to one of the developers the other day, and his apparently cooking up a way to handle linux better. Although, personally, I don't think the POTI team can be exclusively blamed for the Linux problems. Linux has serious standardisation issues that realistically makes it difficult to support unless the company packages applications themselves.

I'd possibly expect a more reliable solution in 1.6 (the version due in feb, but I am speculating) as its too late to be added to 1.4 now (due in the next 2 or 3 weeks). Its also worth noting that many problems are actually caused by dodgy stuff/known bugs libraries like Libvisual aren't meant to be doing.

Personally, I can hardly wait for the official fix to be put into place because it saves me a lot of responses. It may also be worth talking to the Ubuntu development team though to get Songbird officially packaged...

• I’m frustrated
Hi,

I've been running Songbird 1.2.0 on Linux Mint for a few days and it's been running real smoothly, even better than on Windows actually. That is up until earlier today when all of a sudden I can't start the application at all. Nothing happens when I click the icon but if I click it repeatedly and rapidly, I get a message that songbird is already running and I should terminate the process. The problem is that according to system monitor, there is no songbird process open to terminate.. I really have no clue why this happened because I haven't made any modifications to the player for days and even so the only add-ons I have are lyrics master and the chrome theme. Can anyone offer any hope of fixing this or should I just delete everything and start over again?

EDIT:
Starting over again seems to be quite difficult too. I renamed the songbird directory and extracted the archive again and I still have the same problem.

I recently upgraded to 1.2.0 from 1.1.2 on Ubuntu x86_64. While 1.1 worked perfectly, 1.2 refused to start.
I tried to start it from terminal, while for the first start Songbird just hangs and displays nothing, but after Ctrl+C and restarting, it shows following error -

<br />
Could not initialize GStreamer: Error re-scanning registry , child terminated by signal<br />

I tried to search over Internet and came up with following solution.

Remove following package - libvisual-0.4.-plugins
<br />
sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins<br />

• I recently installed the newest version of Songbird, it worked for two days. Now when I click Songbird, it tells me it's starting down in the Window List, but it never pops up.

I've tried all three methods from here to install it afterwards... none of them I got to work.

Anyone have a clue what could possibly going on?

Oh and this is on Ubuntu 9.10(32bit)

• Trying to install Songbird 1.4 on Debian GNU/Linux. Untarred in /opt, changed owner from root to username. Getting this error (http://pastebin.com/m543b32a3) and Songbird doesn't start. Also, I'm using latest version of packages from Debian Sid.

Seems, some more packages are needed. Help appreciated! :-)

• I’m unconcerned
I am using Fedora 12 and none of the above solutions worked for me. I am pretty sure this is a problem with gstreamer since a few other applications are reporting similar errors (Nautilus being the most notable). Anyway, I am running a system update, which I see includes updates to parts of gstreamer, so we will see if that has any effect.

• My solution from further up http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... works for me on Fedora 12.

Beware, anytime you upgrade Songbird (either manually or through the built in tool) you have to re-delete the bundled gstreamer.

• Yeah I already tried that, but it did not seem to work (e.g. rm -r libgst* in the appropriate directory). I am hoping this update that is currently running fixes things. I am certain there are problems with gstreamer, since my last update broke nautilus forcing me to dolphin. The output from terminal is not dissimilar to what I am seeing with Songbird. Other applications are complaining about gstreamer as well.

My songbird 1.4.3 crashes in Fedora 12 x86_64 after last update. An ancient 1.2.0 from the contributed rpm works fine, but since i updated my system yesterday 1.4 stopped loading. It was working fine before that. I'm using the gstreamer-plugins-ugly 0.10.13-1.fc12 package from rpmforge by the way

Guys, no offence but the lib stuff is really stupid. Linux ain't defective by design like windows, it comes with its own shared library system. Why don't you use it? Think about it, then the distros can package songbird, won't that be a good thing?
• I couldn't agree with this viewpoint more, it would be much better for Songbird to make sure they are compatible with mainline stable GStreamer and distribute for Linux without it.

One potential issue with letting the distribution specific GStreamer handle things is that not all distros come with MP3 support (Fedora for one) because the decoder is patent encumbered or of ambiguous legality. Installing Songbird without MP3 support might cause more problems than it solves because of the bad customer experience.

• Defective by design? Windows and OSX have had shared library support for ages, so I'm not exactly sure what "defects" you are referring to. There isn't much distro-agnostic compiled/distributed software for Linux, which is why people commonly believe differently (incorrectly). There are many advantages of using shared libraries, but also an abundance of disadvantages (especially in Linux).

1) Firstly, officially, I was told in IRC that Songbird uses many patches in Gstreamer which haven't made it upstream yet. Even when they are merged upstream though, they aren't upgraded downstream immediately anyway. In fact, unlike OSX and Windows, often they require the entire distribution to be upgrade. For Ubuntu LTS users, this may be a year later (or longer)!

Since upgrading the distribution isn't exactly a "risk-free operation", and distributions such as Kubuntu has shown some Linux distro's are willing to release distro's which are heavily broken (they shipped a copy of Kubuntu where the entire bluetooth stack was known to be broken). So, if Linux did go mainstream, you would discover many people would often hesitate to install updated Linux distributions. Similar to what they do with Windows and OSX. The difference is that some distro's seem to have an odd definition of acceptable flaws. Either way, if you ran a multi-million dollar company, you'd rather rely on your own company then risk getting busted by problems caused by another (unless you are Darl Mcbride, in which case you believe you own everyone else's code)..

2) If you ship your own version of a library, it means that you have full control and predictability. Upgrades to the OS/library externally are less likely to break your software, and you can patch the library whenever you require.

Since every distro also believes that it's a good idea to add their own random patches to Gstreamer too, if you rely on the system version of Gstreamer, there are more variables to consider. . Not a good way to run a company.

3) Linux has no standard means of installing shared libraries anyway. When distributing an application which you want to work everywhere, you can't rely on Gstreamer being there, or many other libraries (in Linux, you can't even rely on common libraries such as QT existing). Ubuntu uses debs, Redhat RPM's, Gentoo ebuild's, etc. So, that requires that the tar.gz of Songbird has to include its own Gstreamer libraries or risk being unable to work out of the box on some distro's. If it has to include them anyway, why not use them?

4) Finally, Songbird does include environment environment variables to determine whether system Gstreamer libraries, Songbird Gstreamer libraries or both should be used. So technically, it should be possible to use Songbird with only the system Gstreamer version anyway if you wish.

At the moment though, it seems like its using both (judging by the problems I'm hearing about, I may be wrong) as the default.. Really, it should be set to Songbird specific by default.

Just my thoughts.. I'm not saying statically compile everything, but it should be recognised that there are 2 sides to the argument. Technically, there is probably nothing stopping distributions from packaging their own version which only uses the system-wide gstreamer (except laziness perhaps).
• Some of this is just FUD

1) Tons of other programs out there specialize in audio/video playback and rely on unpatched Gstreamer from the distros. Not every distro waits for a dist-upgrade before distributing patches or back ports to core software, in particular Fedora is pretty good about getting Gstreamer patches out. This is part of the reason for the array of Gstreamer plugins (good, bad, ugly). Using the "we're too custom and cutting edge to rely on the default gstreamer or wait for patches" argument doesn't seem to make much sense.

2) You're right, if you ship your own version of a lib you *should* have full control; except apparently Songbird's version of "full control" means broken by default in arguably the two most popular versions of Linux.

3) This is a complicated argument, if by "standard" you mean the same package format you're absolutely correct. If you mean "a standard way of checking to see if a library exists" then you couldn't be more wrong:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-poli...

ldconfig works across Debian/Ubuntu and all the Red Hat flavors, the above is a quick article on the "standard" way for programs to check for libraries.

4) Environment variables are great and Linux users are very happy the Songbird team has included them. Unfortunately I've been looking into this problem on and off since 1.2 and have somehow missed the article describing what the env vars are and what they do.

There are absolutely two sides to this argument, in fact I mentioned some cons to relying on distro provided gstreamer in my last comment. Compiling Songbird isn't for the faint of heart and for a package to get into the distributions repositories they usually need to have a permanent maintainer, I suppose one could call this laziness.

Although then the Songbird community might wonder who the "lazy" one was that allowed the iPod addon to fall into disrepair. I'm not sure what the reasoning was that compelled a company that makes music management software to deprecate the most popular music devices in history no matter how onerous the devices are.

• 1) Many distro's also don't backport properly, or take ages to provide most patches.. I'm only a community member, and I am unfortunately unsure what patches have been applied that requires a custom copy of Gstreamer .. I'm just repeating what I've been told (I'd prefer that Songbird used the system gstreamer honestly)

2) Yep, I totally agree.. But its not because its broken by default, its because Songbird's copy of Gstreamer blends the system gstreamer addons and its own (which is a terrible idea crossmixing versions and such). I've already requested that the Songbird team changes this behavior..

3) I don't mean if a library exists.. If Packagekit ever works properly though, maybe this problem will be fully solved.

4) Actually, not a fan of environment variables myself for reasons like this. I do agree as an override its nice, but I'd rather see an option via GUI (environment variables aren't exposed to the user, and rather needs to be known, hence why I'd prefer another solution).

In regards to the iPod addon, it more was a matter of resources (they don't have the resources to maintain and support it). Also, Apple are stepping up their efforts to block 3rd party software from accessing the iPod's anyway (they have already started to block the developers of jailbreak exploits from the app store, and eventually, it's possible that they will start blocking iphones from the app store whilst they are jailbroken too. Either way, long time, burning resources on iPod support now before the Songbird foundations are complete and whilst Phillips wants POTI to complete a few tasks probably isn't a good idea..

Anyway, I'll let you know how the developers respond to at least fixing the defaults so that they work properly...

So,

Is better? Works for some and doesnt work for the rest?

I still don't see why don't you just package a tar.gz with all statically compiled old libs for people who dont want to use shared libraries? and rpms and debs using the shared libs? It would be nice, so these distro users could use songbird again, not not just hope an upgrade won't break it

And by the way, now i cant use no songbird, 1.2 segfaults and 1.4 and the nightly don't want to add nothing to my library (unrelated to this problem i think)

Hello,

Since i've updated gstreamer (0.10.25), Songbird 1.2.0 (and 1.4b3) doesn't start.
I tried to start it with command-line (-safe-mode option), and these errors appear :
