Thank you very much for your article. I've read it with google translate and it seems for me that article is very good. Also I have suggestions: re-write or correct the article for newest MLyrics version and translate article to English so many more people could enjoy it.
P.S: If you have any qustions about MLyrics and how it works - feel free to ask.

All of the music file I have played, they all have those icons.
And I've just discovered one more thing, SongBird (or MLyics) breaks the IDv3 tag, the track number no longer exists since I exported media changes

If your icons dark it mean Songbird failed to save lyrics to tag, check if you have write permissions for the file and there is no read-only attribute.

I have really enjoyed this add on. A fine work.

Suggestions:

Somewhere show the url being displayed, or show it in the context menu, etc.

Here is the latest list of offending sites that want to play their own music:

doNotLuckySearchSites filter failed for youtube.com. This is the first time it happened. youtube.com is in the extensions.mlyrics.doNotLuckySearchSites, but this song brought up youtube.com and it started playing it.

Song name: Loin Des Yeux Loin Du Coeur
Artist: Paul Mauriat
Album: Paul Mauriat No 26 (Brazil)

Site displayed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzg3Fp...

filter: www.youtube.com,mp3searchy.com,www.sa...

There must be some trick about this case, maybe you can reproduce it. Thanks.

From my side for this track www.youtube.com.sg was first in search results. Maybe then it was redirected directly to youtube.com. Because Google makes filtration we can do nothing about it, try to add www.youtube.com.sg to exceptions list.

I love this add-on! It is the only reason I use only Songbird instead of Winamp. Batch adding lyrics and saving to the file itself instead of the local database make this really useful for saving lyrics to my iPod as well in iTunes.
One annoyance I have noticed however is that the batch gathering windows automatically become full screen. Also it would be nice to be able to pause lyric gathering (I've had it get stuck) and save the ones it has downloaded so far. Right now I can't click the button unless it's finished.

Ok, I wasn't sure this was done one purpose. There is a lot of information, but I didn't expect it to take up the entire screen.

I used to be able to edit/manually enter lyrics when the displayed lyrics were incorrect or in the wrong format (or when lyrics could not be found). The option to even display lyrics in the "show metadata" panel seems to have disappeared.

I see. The edit feature was moved from the "Edit Metadata" dialog to the context menu on the lyrics panel. Just one more thing - why do the lyrics all display double spaced? When I switch to edit mode they display correctly (single spaced). Why don't they display the same as in the edit panel?

I did try that before posting the pictures.

Top Space (margin)
Bottom Space (margin)

There is no option for spacing.

Default (Purple Rain) feather. Just because I don't trust people to use the correct word for things, I decided to try a little experiment. For the majority of the English speaking world, margins means the space around something. As for "lyrics" margins, I take that to mean the space around the lyrics (as a whole). In any text formatting app (Word, Word Perfect, etc), this is the definition of margins. In those apps, "spacing", or more specifically, "line spacing" refers to the space between lines. Thus the terms, "single spaced" and "double spaced". By the last picture I uploaded you can see that margins (top and bottom) are set to zero but are unchecked. I checked them, and left the values at zero. Now the lyrics display properly. Scientific endeavours require precise use of language. Whoever is responsible for mLyrics should modify the config portion accordingly. When the default spacing (unchecked) is double space then the config dialog should not show zero.

Just my two cents.

In any case, it now displays properly.

Thanks for advice. Maybe it is not very clear, but after you click Configure style you can select style you want to use from drop-down list. That style applies to the MLyrics pane. Than you check rules you want to REPLACE and set them accordingly. If you don't check the rule its value remains accordingly to how it was defined in feather style or style you selected.

Thanks. I will not modify the config portion (unless more people vote for this), but could you suggest what terminology MLyrics needs to use (for example instead of "Lyrics" tab name it "Lyrics Line")?
Photo of Jim de GraffJD

Jim de Graff

I would combine top margin and bottom margin into one control and label it "Line spacing". When you have

line 1
line 2
line 3

Setting a top and bottom amount means that you are doubling up the space between lines 1 & 2 and lines 2 & 3 because the space between (for example) lines 1 & 2 in the current dialog is actually (if I understand it correctly) "line 1 bottom margin" + "line 2 top margin". Calling it "line spacing" would make it consistent with the terminology used by word processors.

Again, just my suggestion. Knowing how it works (and how to make it do what I want) is my main objective.

No. Why? Your suggestion was constructive and pointed to some kind of bug in style configuration that needs to be fixed. I did some investigation and realized that there will not be any space doubling, and margins, they overlap, so the space between, for example, first two lines will be equal to the largest margin (bottom margin of the first line or top margin of the second line).
As to you first suggestion It was accepted partially. I agree to call it line spacing and will add description so people will not get confused how MLyrics custom styling works.

I aprreciate suggestions from community. If you have more suggestion\bug reports feel free to post here.

I noticed that when MLyrics saves the lyrics to a file it temporary changes its permissions (to the quite permissive 0666, judging from the source code). Isn't this unexpected and shouldn't MLyrics respect files' permissions by not writing the lyrics if a file is read-only? Because of this I accidentally modified a read-only file I didn't want to modify.

Moreover, I noticed that, for some strange reason, the old file permissions are not restored until another song is played. Not even closing Songbirds restores them.

I thought such behaviour was OK. I will add an option to select if user wants to overwrite read-only files.
MLyrics restores file attributes after FileMetadataService finishes write job. It seems FileMetadataService finishes job when played track stops (or SB swithes to another).

on desktops that usually does not worth extra option (that can b just forgotten) but instead a user confirmation is asked on every file that going to be overrided and rewritten.

that way you cannot toggle the option - and forget

I'm sensing this is a stupid question, as everyone seems to be asking much more technical ones, but.... how on earth do I get started?

I've downloaded the addon but no other instructions have come up. My library is already full of songs, just want to now add their lyrics. Tried the old 'click-and-swear' approach, but no luck yet.

Why do the lyrics keep getting scrambled? Seems like each time I open Songbird, the lyrics for at least half my songs either get scrambled (wrong song lyrics displayed ... they were correct the last time when I saved them!), or they're missing altogether.

Please advise what I can do to keep from having to search and update lyrics every time I use Songbird.

Thanks.

This was my third attempt to use Songbird over the past few years, each time lasting several months. It's just a bit too "high maintenance" and seems to always take on a life of it's own, so, regretfully, I'm again going back to iTunes.

As you wish. The fact is no one else reported the same problem and I cannot reproduce it on my side so if you want to sove this issue you should try to dig deeper (for example try to create new Songbird profile and install MLyrics there, test on what tracks problem exists, does it happens after batch gathering, how it gets scrambled - maybe it is shifted by one track, etc).
Or you shoul try if this happens on other computer and if happens - give me steps to reproduce the problem.

P.S: Giving such kinds of bug reports maybe difficult for the first time but this is the difference between normal user and advanced one.

Okay, next question....

I'm thrilled with the add on - it does exactly what I'd hoped. My problem now is getting this information (lyrics) to transfer over to my music player.

I have the Ariaz 4GB player and when playing a song it does give a lyrics screen, but even after (manually) syncing songs which I saved lyrics to using MLyrics, when using the player it still comes up with the message: 'No lyrics found for this song!'

In the track list you should see Lyrics column (if not - enable it by right clicking on the top left corner # sign). If the lyrics icon is white - all OK, but if it is black - Songbird failed to save lyrics into the file. You may try to ensure the lyrics saved properly with third-party software, for example, eyed3.

P.S: I saw your player has Songbird installed, but I don't know what kind. Are you able to install there MLyrics?

My lyrics icon comes up as a little yellow-ish rectangle in the lyrics column. If I haven't saved the lyrics the column is just empty. I don't know about any third-party software. Presumably this would be something I might need to download?

Are there different versions of MLyrics for different software? My software's properties simply lists it as 'Phillips Songbird', I have no other info on which kind.

Open Help - Add-on help - MLyrics help. There you will see what I mean saying white or black icon. Yes you need to find and download such software, you may look at http://www.id3.org/Implementations. I used eyed3, but it is for linux and has only command line interface.

No there is no other version of MLyrics. You need first ensure with third-party software that lyrics stored correctly, then transfer whole track manually to your music player (do not use sync feature). Report.

1. would it be possible to have the lyrics saved and read as songname.txt or whatnot instead of a tag or database ? I don't like depending on the database or having my id3 tags modified.
2. also, is it possible to add a checkbox that disables automatic retrieval on playback ? currently I unchecked all the site boxes but that means I've lost the functionality of the "in turn" option to search through different databases :(
3. when editing lyrics I'd like to copy paste lyrics that already have sync tags ( for instance [01:18.42] ), but right now something isn't working... its part of my first request, but I have lots of .lyr with timing adjustments and I hate downloading and editing them again...

Regardless, thanks for a great addon :)

2. thanks :)
1.3. lrc files are perfectly fine. I confused "lyr" with "lrc" so they're the same...

What I want is to have a .lrc file saved in the song's directory and not in a database since I dual boot and switch around from songbird, beta, nightingale and so on...

Let me make things clearer by showing you exactly what I want ideally to happen on playback:
1. search for existing db entry.
2. search for existing lrc file in songs directory and\or a dedicated directory.
3. search for existing txt file in songs directory and\or a dedicated directory.
4. search for existing lyrics in song's tag.
5. download lrc file: if allowed, use the list...
6. store in file's directory if read\write as .lrc.
7. store in dedicated directory if read\write as .lrc.
8. store in song's mp3 tag.
9. store in db.

step 5 is conditioned on the failure of steps 1-4.
steps 6-9 and steps 1-4 should be in check-boxes like the databases: control both order of execution and if the steps are actually preformed.

Its a lot to ask but it really covers all the eventualities for just about any usage I can think of. I personally don't need half of these steps but I bet some folks will need them ;)

btw: the problem I'm having currently is possibly having something to do with me using Songbird 1.12.0a, Build 2273 (20120414014112) beta since I have other unrelated bugs. So, I'll wait until 1.12 is official and if the problem persist I'll let you know.

MLyrics does almost all of this, except there is no support for txt files and I don't know if this is needed. Also I don't know where to download lrc files if it is poosible (because they will vary for every track, event for the same track but with different duration). Also (auto)export of lyrics to some location\file and (auto)import could be usefull. Thanks for suggestion.

P.S: .lrc files saved in song's directory. You need to create time tracks for song - this will create .lrc file.

"You need to create time tracks" I see. worst case scenario I'll just write a python script to change any .txt that has a corresponding .lrc and then check if time events are found. if not I can just fake some to just get the lyrics in there ;)

"no support for txt files and I don't know if this is needed" just what "I want ideally to happen", it's not for me :P the script I've mentioned can get the loading done. :D

"some location\file and (auto)import could be usefull" :)

anyhow, I think this is a great addon and I can't thank you enough for all the hard work.

Too many to count... hundreds ? don't worry about me though, I can always script in python something to add false time stamps and rename them into .lrc...

The problem is there's no standard for txt files... I think most originate from MiniLyrics's where the plugin has a submitting capacity that uploads a users own lyrics. What they usually do is to add something like this:

Artist: Bob Dylan
Title: Man Of Constant Sorrow
Album: Whatever

Im a man of constant sorrow,
...

In other implementation I've seen its an lrc without time stamps so it will look like:
[ar:Bob Dylan]
[ti:Man Of Constant Sorrow]

Im a man of constant sorrow,
...

Sadly, while looking like a good solution, this is a bad design since a line without a timestamp in lrc is ignored in many players.

Finally, sometimes it might not even have any meta data: it will just have the lyrics inside.

Mostly, there is a correlation to the song's name so songaaa.mp3 will have songaaa.txt with lyrics in it.

Rarely, the file will be named based on the mp3 tag so: [track#] - [title].txt but also it could be just [title].

I suggest you leave this one be for when you have nothing else to do. .txt files are basically loose junk containers since the 80s and processing them automatically is too time consuming.

btw, Have you heard of CDGs and MP3+G ? Its the "standard" commercial karaoke file format:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD%2BG
I don't actually have any of this files but I understand they are quite popular in Japan... Maybe its a more worthy cause ? ;)

Apparent limit to length of doNotLuckySearchSites.

My present string:

When I put mp3.zing.vn at the front of the string, it blocks the site, but when it is at the end of the string it does not.
